Flood’s Absence May Be
Blessing To Philadelphia
By FRED DOWN
L'PI Sports Writer
Manager Frank Lucchesi
says the loss of $90,000-year
outfielder Curt Flood may be
“a blessing in disguise” for the
Philadelphia Phillies because it
is speeding the development of
Larry Hisle toward stardom.
‘‘Hisle is just super,” said
Lucchesi Sunday night after the
22-year-old outfielder drove in
three runs in the Phillies’ 7-5
victory over the Kansas City
Royals. “If I had to choose
between Hisle and Flood right
now I would choose Hisle.”
An argument could be made
that Hisle has the hardest job
of any player in baseball this
spring. First, the Phillies

Reed Breaks
Collarbone
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.
—Ron Reed, a 6-foot-6 right
hander who was expected to be
one of the mainstays on the
Atlanta Braves pitching staff
this season, broke his collar

months.
A Braves spokesman said
Reed, an 18-game winner last
season when the Braves won
the National League’s Western
Division, was running in a
practice drill when he tripped
and fell.
Dr. Phillip Lichtelau estimat
ed that Reed will be out until
at least mid-June and possibly

West Palm
ATLANTA (UPI)- The Rev.
Ralph Abernathy, head of the
Southern Christian Leadership
Conference, Sunday urged the
Atlanta Braves to move out of
their West Palm Beach, Fla.,
spring training camp because
of a racial incident involving
two black players.
In a telegram to the Braves,
Abernathy said, “Our winning
team of which we are all
proud” should transfer “from
this community which continues
to practice segregation and
discrimination based on race.”
Abernathy was referring to a
West Palm Beach incident in
which two black Braves’
rookies, Dusty Baker and Leo
Foster, were allegedly refused
service in a pool hall because of
the color of their skins.
West Palm Beach Mayor
Eugene Potter has promised an
investigation into the incident
and said, “It’s the place and
not the town.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio (UPI) —
Jacksonville Coach Joe Wil
liams, whose team won the
NCAA Mideast Regional Satur
day by beating Kentucky 106-100,
says he did not scout the
Eastern Regional and his next
opponent, St. Bonaventure.
“We were just worrying about
lowa and Kentucky and getting
out of here,” Williams said.
As things turned out, any
scouting report on St. Bonaven
ture would have to be thrown
out the window anyway, because
of the knee injury suffered by
the Bonnies’ 6-foot-10 All-Ameri
ca Bob Lanier, requiring sur
gery.
According to Williams and
Kentucky Coach Adolph Rupp,
the game was decided in the
backcourt.
Williams praised the play of
his guards, Rex Morgan and
Chip Dublin. “When the chips
are down,” Williams said, “Mor
gan will always come through
and win the ball game for us
and he really did today.”
arrived there via a fielder’s
choice.
Orlando Cepeda, Hank Aaron
and Rico Carty all homered dur
ing the contest, giving Braves
fans a preview of the muscle in
the Atlanta lineup. Cepeda and
Aaron each hit round - trippers
with a man on base, while Car
ty’s came with the bases empty.
Aaron’s home run was his
fifth in exhibition play.
Batimore jumped off to a six
run lead in the contest, five
runs coming in the first inning.
Rookie Atlanta pitcher Mike Mc-
Queen walked the bases loaded
and then gave up a triple to
Chico Salmon. Another triple by
Bob Floyd and an error filled
out the Oriole’s five-run first.
Atlanta takes on the Houston
Astros today at Cocoa Beach.

Dublin, a non-starter who
usually plays most of the game,
came off the Dolphin bench
early and contributed 19 points
and an outstanding floor game,
and Vaughn Wedeking, another
backcourt performer, had 12.
Rupp, on the other hand, be
moaned the play of his guards.
“Our guards really fell short
of what they can do,” Rupp
said. “We seemed to be disor
ganized and I don’t know the
reason for it. We just didn’t get
the play from our guards that
we should have, and that was a
big factor.
Another big factor in the Ken
tucky loss had to be the fouling
out of All-America Dan Issel
with 10:16 remaining in the
game, and Mike Pratt with
8:07 to go.
Issel led the Wildcats with 28

“Taking Kentucky’s inside

us,” Williams said.
Kentucky was down 90-80 with
5:30 to go, but put on a last
gasp spurt, led by sophomore
Tom Parker, to cut it to 102-100
with 50 seconds left.
' Morgan, who led the Dolphins

free throws with 27 seconds to
go to clinch it, and Greg Nelson
broke away for a layup shortly

Gilmore, who also spent sev
eral minutes on the bench after
picking up his fourth personal
with 11:29 to go, scored 24
points and had 20 rebounds for
the Dolphins. Parker scored 21
for Kentucky and teammate
Terry Mills had 18.
In the consolation game, lowa

last-second loss to Jacksonville
