500 March In Covington
COVINGTON, Ga. (UPI) -
Some 500 black students pro
testing school integration staged
another march Tuesday night
following the arrests of three
persons on charges of trying to
keep children out of public
school.
The arrests occurred at a
black “freedom school” the pro
testors tried to set up in the St.
Paul’s Methodist Church Tues
day and vowed to try again to
day. State troopers managed to
get about 100 children back to
regular school in cars and
school buses.

Conference staff worker Lloyd
Jackson claimed that a patrol
officer threatened and struck
one boy during the incident, a
charge that was denied by the
officer.
Brunswick
Is Warned
ATLANTA (UPl)—The city of
Brunswick has been warned to
clean up its city dump or face
prosecution by the attorney gen
eral’s office for violation of air
pollution laws.
Brunswick Tuesday became
the second major Georgia city
to be threatened with possible
legal action because of its gar
bage dump.
After months of warnings, the
state finally turned a case
against the city of Macon over
to the legal department for ac
tion.
State Health Department offi
cials told Brunswick authorities
to take immediate action to
clean up their dump or face the
same fate as Macon.
Air quality control director
Robert H. Collom Jr. said his
department has been in contact
since last April with Brunswick
officials who were issued a
cease and desist order during
the summer.
Collom said he delivered an
ultimatum by letter to Bruns
wick City Manager J. F. Hulse
Jr. to stop open burning at the
dump by the end of April or de
vise a plan to end the air pol
lution.
Collom said his department
has issued a total of 13 orders
to Georgia cities and counties
during the past year for air pol
lution violations. He said fnost
solved their problems without
court action.

Jackson claimed that Maj.
Porter Weaver, head of the
state patrol, aide Lt C. F.
Abernathy and Newton County
Sheriff Henry Odom boarded a
bus loaded with children bound
for the “freedom school” and
tried to get them off.
Recharged that when 16-year
old Albert Johnson protested,
Abernathy said to him “you
won’t live to be 17 years of age
if you don’t keep your mouth
shut.” Jackson charged that the
officer then hit the child with
his club across the chest.
Abernathy and Weaver denied
that such an incident occurred.
“I’ve never threatened any
one,” said Abernathy. “No such
conversation ever took place.
And as far as hitting him with
a club, I don’t even carry a
club.
“I’m not going to intimidate
anybody,” the officer said, “but
I’m not going to be intimidated
with lies either.”
Weaver said the three arrests
were made when SCLC workers
tried to prevent the children
from returning to public school.
The integration plan calls for
the Negro R. L. Cousins High
School to become an integrated
junior high while all high school
students will attend now - white
Newton County High School.
The black students fear black
administrators will be edged
into powerless jobs in the
switch. Marches have been con
ducted for the past month.
Weaver said most of the chil
dren voluntarily boarded a bus
