THE DOCTOR SAYS
Diabetic Must Use
Care Against Infection
By WAYNE G. BRANDSTADT, M.D.
'. When Mr. Average Citizen
gets a small cut, cruise or
blister on his foot he is not
linduly worried. With proper
treatment, it will heal and
be forgotten. But for the dia
betic such a lesion may lead
to gangrene or an infection
that refuses to heal because
of impaired circulation.
Diabetes is characterized
not only by a malfunction of
the pancreas but also by a
narrowing of the arteries. If
the diabetes is not controlled,
the arterial disease may as-
Mect any part of the body.
Corns, by exerting a con
stant pressure on the small
arteries in the toes, can also
shut off the local blood sup
ply in a diabetic and lead to
gangrene.
The normal body’s protec
tion against infection—white
blood cells and antibodies—
’is carried in the blood
■stream. Because in the dia
betic the circulation is im
paired, these protective ele
ments are not brought to the
germs in amounts sufficient
■to kill them. Furthermore,
Z the decreased presence of
; oxygen in the lesion enables
germs that flourish only in
,the absence of oxygen to
gain a foothold. Such germs
.invade normal tissues only
. when a wound is very deep.
I Persons with diabetes
: should take special care not
to let their hands or feet get
cold because cold constricts
•the arteries and further im-
■ pairs the circulation. Tobac

To improve the cir
culation, a brisk daily walk
Ito recommended and, above

-control.

MRS. OLA McCOWAN
HISTORY IS MADE
First lady service operator for
Getz in over 81 years
Mrs. McCowan has completed the
first phase of the Getz service train
ing program.
Mrs. McCowan is assigned to the
Griffin, Georgia office. A large num
ber of complimentary telephone calls
have come into the office and several
letters have been written commend
ing Mrs. McCowan’s service and the
company for employing a lady.
One lady advised in writing, that
it could be expected that a lady serv
ice operator would be more skilled in
rendering service to homes, than
would men. She requested that Mrs.
McCowan remain her regular service
operator.
A Motel account wrote that Mrs.
McCowan rendered better service in
one visit than the male service opera
tor preceding her had rendered in
several service visits. They requested
that the company send her each
month as a regular operator.

you listed that might be
caused by sinus trouble are
a feeling of pressure in the
forehead and headache. Both
are usually worse in the
morning and clear up before
noon. Smoking can aggra
vate it but a food would
make it worse only if you
were allergic to it. If you
have a chronic sinusitis that
does not yield to the usual
treatment, your doctor
should determine the cause.
