er figures he should drive in a
lot of runs this season even if
he doesn’t have much of a
batting average.
“The way those guys have
been getting on base ahead of
me, I can’t help but have a
pretty good runs-batted-in to
tal,” said the Braves third
baseman who knocked in four
runs with a pair of homers
Tuesday night while the Braves
were beating the Pittsburgh
Pirates 12-6.
“How can I miss with Hank
Aaron (.323), Rico Carty (.435)
and Orlando Cepeda (.348)
hitting right in front of me?”
Boyer asked.
Boyer’s point is well taken.
He’s only batting .209 at the
moment but although he has
only 18 base hits, he’s got 17
RBIs. If he holds that pace,
Clete will have his worst year
in more than a decade
percentage wise—but his best
year ever so far as RBIs are
concerned, conceivably topping
the 100 mark.
Boyer’s career batting aver
age is .241 and that’s just about
where he hits each season. He’s
never had 100 RBIs before
although he came mighty close
in 1967, his first year with the
Braves, when he drove in 97
runs.
Boyer could have had himself
quite a night Tuesday but, after
hitting the two homers, he left
the bases loaded by striking out
after the Pirates changed
pitchers on him in the middle
of his time at bat.
“Yeah, the idea of a grand
slam crossed my mind,” Boyer
said with a grin. “But really, I
was more concerned about
what the next pitch would be.”
The Braves already had
things pretty well in hand
Tuesday night before Boyer got
into the act. They scored seven
runs in a big second inning and
Clete’s homers were more like
frosting on the cake.
Felix Millan and Hank Aaron
hit the big Hows in that big
inning; Millan coming through
with a three-run double and
Aaron following immediately
with his 10th homer of the
season and the 564th of his
career.
Rico Carty, who scored three
runs, extended his batting
streak to 24 games with a pair
of singles and hiked his major
league leading average to .435.
Ageless Hoyt Wilhelm finally
made his 998th pitching appea
rance as he worked the final
three innings in relief of George
Stone (4-1) and sewed up the
Braves’ eighth straight victory.
The Braves and Pirates wrap
up their three-game series here
tonight with Phil Niekro (2-4)
who shut out the Pirates on two
hits 10 days ago going against
Dock Ellis (2-1).
