ment in Cambodia and the
killings of four Kent (Ohio)
State University students by
National Guardsmen hit many
campuses across the nation
today.

University of Ohio Tuesday and
the governors of Maryland,
Oklahoma and New Mexico
ordered the guard to alert or
standby status.
The President and Mrs.
Nixon canceled travel plans for
the week in an atmosphere of
White House concern about
domestic problems and demon
strations.
Protests and strikes rocked
prestigious West Coast schools.
Police came out in force at
UCLA and a spreading strike
closed down much activity at
the University of California in
Berkeley. A general strike
continued at Stanford.
A firebomb caused S3OO
damage to the inside of a
ROTC building at the Universi
ty of Utah in Salt Lake City
and two Molotov cocktails were
thrown at the ROTC building at
the Davis campus of the
University of California.
Vet Is Beaten
A Vietnam veteran with an
artificial leg at Gonzaga
University in Spokane, Wash.,
said he suffered “some loose
teeth and a black eye” when
beaten by demonstrators as he
tried to enter a school building.
Fire destroyed an Air Force
ROTC building on the Universi
ty of Kentucky campus today.
A 21-year-old coed was arrested
for throwing a firebomb into
the building.
A firebombing caused minor
damage at a Southern Illinois
University of Illinois campus
building in Carbondale. Fire,
possibly arson, did $50,000
damage and injured four
campus policemen at the
University of Illinois Chicago
Circle campus.
Strikes or mourning periods
were scheduled today at scores
of schools including the Univer
sity of Notre Dame, John
Hopkins University, the Univer
sity of Illinois, the University of
Tennessee and Michigan State
University.
Boston University announced
Tuesday it was closing for the
year because of a “massive
expression of student concern.”
Brown and Tufts universities
announced termination of clas
ses for the year and the
students and faculty of Harvard
Law School voted “overwhel
mingly” to urge closing of
classes for the rest of the year.
Students Storm Capitol
Nearly 2,000 students stormed
the Capitol and spilled into
downtown Austin, Tex., streets.
Police used tear gas to force
the rioters back but one
University of Texas student
said they would take the
building “for good” today.
Students at the University of
New Mexico in Albuquerque
took over an Air Force ROTC
building today. Gov. David F.
Cargo ordered the National
Guard onto school grounds and
said, “I am not going to put up
with this. They are going to go
out of there with force. There is
not going to be a Kent State . .
. I have the National Guard and
they are going to run (the
students) out.”
About 1,000 demonstrators
swept through the Champaign-
Urbana business district after a
rally by 2,300 University of
Illinois students. Many windows
were broken and a firebomb
was thrown but other students
put out the fire.
At Ohio State University in
Columbus, a small contingent
of guardsmen dispersed bands
of disruptive students. Police in
Buffalo, N.Y., were showered
with rocks and had to use tear
gas to break up a crowd of
1,500 students.
Motto Was Omitted
The 1907 issue of the U.S.
S2O gold coin did not origi
nally carry the motto, “In
God We Trust,” the omission
being made to comply with
the belief of President Theo
dore Roosevelt that such a
motto on coins of commerce
was sacrilegious. Congress,
however, forced restoration
of the motto in 1908 and a
second issue of the coin was
made.
Served in Both Houses
William Rufus King was
the only U.S. vice-president
to serve in both houses of
Congress. In each house, he
represented a different
state. He was elected a rep
resentative from North
Carolina in 1811 and a sena
tor from Alabama in 1819.
