He duplicated the feat in the

The eighth inning almost

Braves Bow
In 11 th, 7-6
By RABUN MATTHEWS
ATLANTA (UPI)-Just when
it appeared there might yet be
some Use in the Atlanta Braves,
a couple of old folks did their
best to bury the corpse.
The Braves had not scored in
22 innings and trailed 64 to San
Francisco and Juan Marichal in
the eighth inning Thursday
night, and Marichal was
pitching one of his better
games in a disappointing
season.
Then suddenly the Braves
erupted for six runs, tied the
game and sent it into extra
innings.
But WUlie Mays raced to
third on his aging legs when
reUever Bob Piddy made a wild
pitch, then scored his third run
of the game on an infield out in
the 11th inning, and 40-year-old
Don McMahon survived a last
ditch jam to pick up 74 win.
Dick Dietz, Frank Johnson
and Hal Lanier had all driven
in two runs apiece to stake
Marichal to a 64 lead after
seven innings and the smooth
working righthander was hav
ing no trouble setting the
Braves down.
Presbyterians
Win, 26-6
First Presbyterian beat First
Methodist 264 and East Griffin
stopped Crestview yesterday in
the Church Softball Tourna
ment.
Larry McCallum hit a home
run, triple and double for First
Presbyterian. Sam Traylor hit a
home run and three singles.
David Parvin hit a triple and
double for First Methodist.
RusseU Gray had a double and
two singles.
HoUis Fowler hit a home run,
triple and double for East
Griffin. Mike Oliver hit a double
and two singles.
Cahrles Mote hit two doubles
and a single for Crestview and
Jimmy Lynch hit two singles.
College Park tied the game in
the second with Dallas Rhea
doubling home Jimmy Hamil
ton, who had singled. College
Park took the lead in the fourth
inning on a single by Doug
Casey and a two base hit by
Benjy Clark, scoring Casey.
College Park scored two more
runs in the fifth with single runs
in the sixth and seventh.
Gregory McCrary was
Griffin’s starting pitcher. He
struck out seven and walked
two. Jerry Stubbs pitched two
innings. He fanned two and
walked three McCrary was
charged with the loss.
Griffin will be at home Satur
day night. Game time is 8
o’clock. Post 15 will play Post
147 of West End.
wanis. Bill Allison hit two singles
and Rickey Griffin and Fred
Sonder hit one.
Curtis Crawley, who re
lieved Mike Jones in the third,
was Buick-Garment’s winning
pitcher.
Mel Stewart was Pomona
Products starting and losing
pitcher. Jere Moore took over in
the fifth.
Larry Martin hit a three-run
homer for Buick-Garment.
Crawley hit three singles,
Gregory Head hit two, and
Wayne Dunn, Mike Jones, Paul
Mansour and Mickey Corley hit
one.
Moore hit a two-run homer for
Pomona. John Mabbett hit a
double and single, Barry Bunn
hit three singles, Wynn Harris
doubled, Mel Stewart doubled
and Jimbo Murray, Gene Babb
and Keith Womack singled.
Then in the eighth, Felix
Millan singled to open the
inning and was forced at second
on a fielder’s choice grounder
hit by Tony Gonzalez. Orlando
Cepeda followed with his 15th
homer. Hal King, who killed
two rallies by hitting into
double plays, singled and when
Marichal walked Jimmy Hall,
McMahon was brought in to
relieve Marichal.
Mike Lum greeted the old
Atlanta nemesis with a run
scoring double and Clete Boyer
pounded a three-run homer to
tie the score. But that was all
for the Braves.
McMahon, who now has
pitched 14-24 innings against
Atlanta this year in six games,
beaten them three times and
given up only seven hits, shut
the door the rest of the way.
In the 11th, Mays, now 39,
singled for the 2,992 nd hit of
his career, and was off and
running on a 3-2 pitch to Willie
McCovey. When Priddy threw
threw the pitch into the dirt
and pat King, Mays never
stopped running, racing to third
easily while McCovey walked.
Dick Dietz then hit a line drive
off Priddy’s chest and before
the pitcher could get the ball to
make a play at the plate, Mays
scored.
Atlanta almost scored in its
half of the inning. With one out,
Hank Aaron pinch-hit for Gil
Garrido. Aaron, injured for two
games, drilled a line drive into
the left field seats, but just
foul, before walking. McMahon
then hit Gonzalez with a pitch
and Cepeda hit a line drive foul
by less than a foot before
walking to load the bases and
bring up King.
But King popped up to
McCovey to and the threat and
the game and drop Atlanta
back to even .500 on the season.
The loss was the third in a row
for the Braves.
Tonight, Cincinnati opens a
four-game series at the Sta
dium with a double-header
against the Braves. Roti Reed
(1-2) and George Stone (74)
are scheduled to pitch for
Atlanta against Jim Merritt
(144) and probably Gary Nolan
(104).

'Grand Slammer'
Wasn't Homer
By STU CAMEN
UPI Sports Writer
It’s unlikely Dalton Jones will
ever forget his first major
league grand slam homer...even
when he finally hits it.
Jones thought he had accom
plished the feat Thursday night
when he pinch hit for Detroit
catcher Jim Price with the
bases loaded and one out in the
seventh inning against Boston
with the score tied 3-3. Jones
slammed a 2-2 changeup from
Red Sox reliever Vicente Romo
into the upper deck in right
field.
But he didn’t notice he was
passing teammate Don Wert
between first and second base.
The umpires noticed with more
than passing interest, however,
and Jones was declared out on
the spot and given a three-run
single.
“I got excited, that’s what
happened,” Jones explained
afterwards. I knew it was gone
and I watched the ball hit in
the seats. I got halfway betwen
first and second before I came
to my sense. Then I saw I
passed Wert.”

On All-Stars
By JOE SARGIS
UPI Sports Writer
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -
Willie McCovey of the San
Francisco Giants, the 1969
MVP, can cheer up today, he’s
on the 1970 National League
All-Star team.
It probably comes as no
surprise to McCovey or NL
fans but Gil Hodges of the
Mets, who will lead the NL on
July 14 in spanking new
Riverfront Stadium in Cincinna
ti, made it official by picking
the big first baseman among
his supplementary choices.
That’s what bothered McCo
vey, although he tried to hide
it, when Rich Allen of the
Cardinals beat him out, narrow
ly, in the balloting by fans for
the starting team.
Hodges rounded out his NL
squad by also picking such as
Roberto Clemente, like McCo
vey an MVP, Dick Dietz, Joe
Torre, Pete Rose and Felix
Millan.
There were no surprises
there.
There were some raised
eyebrows, though, when Hodges
picked Jim Hickman of the
Cubs. Hickman, a journeyman
outfielder-first baseman who
never once in the past has
distinguished himself enough to
rate even an outside chance at
an All-Star berth, has been the
Cubs’ big hit this season, and
won his spot on merit.
The other picks by Hodges
were his own Bud Harrelson,
Denis Menke of the Astros,
rookie flash Bill Grabarkewitz
of the Dodgers, Rusty Staub of
the Astros and Clarence Gaston
of the Padres.
Picked by the fans, and the
players who will start, are
Johnny Bench of the Reds
behind the plate, Allen at first,
Glen Beckert of the Cubs at
second, Don Kessinger of the
Cubs at short, Tony Perez of
the Reds at third and Hank

didn’t need Jones’ run since his
“grand slam” single was more
than enough to power them to a
7-3 victory.
Daryl Patterson relieved Den
ny McLain in the seventh and
permitted the Red Sox only one
hit the rest of the way to gain
his second victory. Dick Scho
field homered for Boston’s first
run.
In other American League
games, Minnesota beat Califor
nia, 4-2, New York downed
Baltimore, 7-5, in a game called
in the eighth inning because of
rain, Chicago nipped Milwauk
ee, 6-5, and Washington beat
Cleveland, 9-3. Oakland and
Kansas city were idle.
In the National League, New
York beat Montreal, 7-1,
Pittsburgh shut out St. Louis, 6-
0, Houston downed Los Angeles,
9-5, San Diego nipped Cincinna
ti, 10-9, in 10 innings, and San
Francisco shaded Atlanta, 7-6,
in 11 innings. Chicago and
Philadelphia were not sche
duled.
Homer Snaps Tie
Leo Cardenas’ two-run homer
in the ninth snapped a 2-2 tie
and paced Minnesota past
California for the Twins’ fifth
Carty in the outfield.
Hodges also selected, pre
viously, pitchers Wayne Simp
son and Jim Merritt of the
Reds, Bob Gibson of the
Cardinals, Gaylord Perry of the
Giants, Tom Seaver of the
Mets, Claude Osteen of the
Dodgers, Hoyt Wilhelm of the
Braves and Joe Hoerner of the
Phils.
Leo Durocher of the Cubs and
Lum Harris of the Braves were
selected by Hodges as his
coaches. The Cubs finished
second to the Mets in the NL
East last year and the Braves
won the NL West before bowing
to the Mets in the playoffs.
