Teen pregnancies expose
mother, baby to hazards
By CLIFF SMITH
Copley News Service
Girls who become pregnant
before they are 17 years old
expose themselves and their
babies to great risk
This is one of several con
clusions about pregnancy an
nounced by the Committee on
Maternal Nutrition of the Na
tional Research Council. An
arm of the National Academy
of Sciences, the council is one
of the most prestigious scien
tific bodies in the nation.
The committee also was
sharply critical of the current
medical practice of restricting
pregnant women to a weight
gain of only 10 to 14 pounds,
and recommended an average
weight gain of 24 pounds,
within a range of 20 to 25
pounds
The increased risk of
pregnancy during adolescence,
the committee said, comes
from lack of development and
balance of the endocrine
system, nutritional depletion,
inadequate prenatal care fre
quently received by pregnant
girls and emotional stress.
“Death rates are much
higher for both white and
nonwhite babies born to
mothers under 15,” the com
mittee concluded, noting a
death rate for infants bom
to white mothers of 32.1 per
thousand compared with 15 9
per thousand among mothers
20-24 years old.
“The highest risk group for
infant mortality is made up
of young women under 20 who
have had repeated pregnan
cies,” the study showed.
Noting an increase in
adolescent pregnancies in the
United States, the committee
said:
“Adolescents often undergo
serious complications during
pregnancy, the most frequent
being premature labor, iron
deficiency anemia, feto-pelvic
disproportion, and prolonged
labor Toxemia is a special
hazard for young pregnant
girls ”
Toxemia is a metabolic
disorder accompanied by body

Old Wheels Keep Turning
Visiting Montevideo, Uruguay, is like stepping back
in time since a high percentage of the cars and taxis
are more than 40 years old. Because enormous import
taxes raise the cost of new autos to about $12,000,
most local residents ride about in museum pieces.

swelling and increased blood
pressure It often leads to
a more serious and often fatal
complication known as
eclampsia, which is marked
by convulsions
One of the main reasons
for the practice of weight
restriction during pregnancy,
the committee noted, has been
to reduce the risk of toxemia
and its complications i
“Yet.” the report concluded,
“the committee found no
evidence that excessive weight
gain, whether in the form of
fat or water, causes tox
emia.”
Neither is there evidence
showing that “the birth
weight of an infant is strongly
associated with and con
ditioned by the weight gain
of its mother as well as her
prepregnancy weight and
stature. Low birth weight, the
committee said, also is related
directly to “high incidences”
of newborn deaths in the
United States, which ranked
13th among 40 advanced coun
tries in infant mortality.
“Accordingly," the com
mittee stated, “the current
obstetric practice in the
United States that tends to
restrict normal weight gain
is not justified.
“Weight reduction programs
and severe caloric restrictions
should not be undertaken dur
ing pregnancy, even for obese
women. because of the
possibility of adverse effects
on the fetus' weight and
neurological development.
“Weight restrictions are
particularly harmful to un
derweight women — who
make up as much as one
third of the prenatal patients
in clinic practices — and to
pregnant adolescents."
The report also states that
routine supplementation of
diets of pregnant women with
vitamin and mineral prepara
tions is of doubtful value with
the exception of iron and folic
acid
The scientists also ques
tioned the common practice
of restricting salt intake as
a means of toxemia preven
tion and warned that salt
restriction in combination with
the use of diuretics, drugs
that promote discharge of
fluids, is potentially
dangerous
