said Tuesday his agency would
likely use some of the state’s
new and stronger anti-pollution
laws to force the Bona Allen
Co. to stop dumping its wastes
into Suwanee Creek, from which
they flow into the Chattahoo
chee.
“I think we’re going to use
some of the new laws that were
passed by the General Assem
bly (earlier this year) in this
particular case,” be said. “We
will probably call a hearing on
the company or try to get an
injunction against them to close
them down."
Meanwhile, Lamar Whiting,
president of Bona Allen, issued
a statement denying his com-
pany was responsible for dis
coloring the water.
“We are unable to relate any
water discoloration to any waste
products from Bona Allen,” he
said.
Howard said it was the second
time within two months that he
had to crack down on Bona Al
len, which tans hides used to
make saddles and other leather
products.
He said Bona Allen was order
ed last February to halt pollu
tion which also changed the color
of the river to blue. Officials of
the firm at that time promised
to inspect their facilities and to
end any pollution.
Howard said, “they’ve got a
secondary (treatment) plant up
there, but apparently they can’t
do too much with this color that
develops.”
The pollutants reached Atlan
ta’s water works Tuesday, ac
cording to Paul Weir, director
of the works. The discoloration
was expected to last about three
or four days, he said, but posed
no immediate danger to
drinking water.

Macon boy, 10,
tells of kidnap
MACON, Ga. (UPI)-A 10-
year-old Macon boy says he
was abducted, beaten with a
stick and handcuffed to a bed
by a man who eventually was
paid $5,000 to free the boy.
Michael Register told the Bibb
Superior Court he was grabbed
by two men who told him there
was a “real nice man” who
wanted to give him some
money. He pointed to John
Plummer, 20, as the “real nice
man” who allegedly beat him,
handcuffed him and stuck him
in a closet for a time.
Plummer was bound over for
trial on a charge of kidnaping
after Judge James I. Wood lis
tened to Michael’s testimony.
Michael said Plummer left
him handcuffed to the bed when
he went to pick up the money
which was paid by the boy’s
mother through a fence along
Interstate 75 near Macon.
When Plummer returned, “he
told me to help him count it
and I did,” Michael said. “I
hadn’t seen that much money in
my whole life.”
The boy said he managed to
steal S2O of the money as well
as an identification card belong
ing to Plummer. The card was
later used to locate and arrest
the man.
