So that’s the news?
By RICK Du BROW
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - You
have noticed the increasing
trend toward informality on
some local television newscasts
as the anchormen and their
colleagues banter casually with
each other.
Part of the reason for this is
to make the news presentation
seem less remote and imper
sonal for viewers, and that’s
certainly a good idea. Another
factor in the trend is that the
informal approach has scored
well in the ratings in a few
places, so imitation is natural.
The best of all the informal
presentations is on San Francis
co's noncommercial video sta
tion, KQED, where the “news
room” program, in which
reporters discuss matters with
each other in city-room style,

has been a great success,

Really Casual
However, not all stations
employing the newscast infor
mality are as oriented to the
hard-nosed city-room style, and
the result sometimes has been
wondrous to behold, even for
admirers of the casual ap
proach. Therefore, we take you
today to a local station
newscast in progress, with
Harry the anchorman, Joe the
sort-of-assistant anchorman and
Tom the sports reporter. Harry
is speaking:
“Well, Joe, it looks as if
there’s more trouble in the
Middle East today.”
“Yes, Harry, it’s a troubled
place, all right. I remember
when I was there last year.”
“I do, too, Joe. You came
back with a beautiful tan
looked great. And that ward
robe you bought there—just
sensational!”
“Well, Harry, I found a
terrific tailor in Beirut, and he
made three suits for me in just
a few days. Very reasonable
too.”
“But it was worth it, Joe.
Everyone here commented on
the suits.”
“Thanks, Harry. And now
back to you.”
Summing Up Sports
“Right, Joe. Well, so much
for the Middle East. Next up—
our man Tom with the sports.”
“Okay, Harry. And I guess
we’ve all heard by now that
Arnold Palmer made four
holes-in-one today.”
“Yes, it is pretty well known

“Not bad, Harry. I’m down in
the 90s now, and I hope I can

“Right, Tom, and thanks.

big margin.
Nader said bank robbers took
over |8 million from the public
in 1970, according to FBI

over $l5O million by adding
from 10 to 15 per cent water to

“The sanctions against econ
