Joyce was a superstitious
Irishman who had a real thing
about violence, guns and dogs
But if anyone maligned his
idol, Byron, he would forget
his hatred of violence and put
up a real fight.
From the time he was 13

tidy sum winning scholastic
prizes This came in handy
for his family's financial

who stayed in Joyce’s memory
for years. They later emerged
as unforgettable characters in
many of his books such as
"Ulysses” and "Exiles.”
At 14, Joyce went in for
religion. He served two terms
as prefect of the Sodality of
the Blessed Virgin Mary He
organized his prayers, rituals,
and confessions He began to
think it might be rather neat
to become a Jesuit priest.
Unfortunately, his piety did
not last long.
At 16, he entered University
College at Dublin where he
no longer made noises like
a scholar He became a cut
up, untidy in both mind and
body He was as much of
a hippie as one could be in
1899. Then his love of reading
and writing saved him from
making a complete fool of
himself
From tnen on, Joyce began
the long, difficult tasks of
becoming a writer
YOUTH BEAT
A Funny-True
Look at Youth
THE GAME’S NAME—The Game of the Name is over
and although most of you got the answer to the question
(Who is Reginald Dwight?) right, some of you said he
was everyone from Engelbert Humperdinck to Tiny Tim.
The real answer is Elton John and we didn’t stump many
of you. The 12 fastest replies have received prizes.
SUPER SUMMER BOOK—If you’re 13 and it’s summer,
some pretty weird things can happen—but not as weird
—or as funny—or as sad—as the things that happen to
Jamie Mcßride, the hero (of sorts) of a satirical book
called “The Super Summer of Jamie Mcßride,” written
by two magazine writers who’ve covered the youth scene
since the early 19605. Jack Shepherd and Christopher
S. Wren are the authors and they chronicle the summer
spent by Jamie in the “hip, cool, what’s-happening
world” of drugs, demonstrations, sensitivity training and
meditation, with Constant Flowersong as his 21-year-old
guide. The book takes a funny, but, in some ways, sym
pathetic look at what the youth culture has become —
and it’s hilarious and eye-opening reading.
BRIDGING THE COUNTRY GAP—’Teen Magazine
had an idea last year for breaking down some inter
national barriers. What they started was a pen pal pro
gram between ’Teen readers and Bravo fans (Bravo is
a teen-age magazine published in West Germany). The
response to the program was fantastic, with 70,000 Ger
man teen-agers responding and 40,000 Americans follow
ing suit. The program went over so well, in fact, that in
its April, 1971, issue ’Teen is repeating its offer. And
they’re thinking of making the program worldwide, with
an exchange of letters with Italian teens next on the list.
If you’re interested in finding out what’s happening out
side the U.S.A., the ’Teen program sounds like a good
way to do it.
GAP-BRIDGING—Steve Trammell, a 17-year-old from
Highland, Calif., decided to bridge a generation gap of
sorts by enrolling in an adult education class in photog
graphy. Not only were the vibrations from the adults
good, but Steve did so well that the course helped him
win a SI,OOO scholarship in photography from Eastman
Kodak, which sponsors a 4-H Photography Project.

TRAPEZE: Swinging through the U.S.A.
Frank Sinatra has been on the British musical charts
for two years, has rewritten the lyrics for Joe Frazier’s
rendition of the song. Naturally, it’ll be the song of a
champ.
FLYING TRAPEZE—The British singing group, Trap
eze, will be making a cross-country U.S. tour starting
this month. The Moody Blues discovered them and
they’re one of the finest “heavy” rock groups to come
along since Cream. Their latest album is “Medusa” for
Threshold. The group’s been together for two years
and they got their first big break with TV exposure on
the BBC Mel Galley, David Holland and Glenn Hughes
are the Trapeze artists.
RIVERS FLOW—Johnny Rivers’ upcoming single rec
ord “Sea Cruise,” the old Frankie Ford #1 single, is being
released on the United Artist label in April. (David Frost
will have Johnny on his show.) Incidentally, Rivers has
just returned from India, where he meditated and still
managed to write lots of songs.
