President Nixon to grant Lt. William Calley a full pardon.
(UPI)
Mayor Thompson
presents names
WASHINGTON (UPI )-Mayor
Ronnie Thompson of Macon, Ga.
brought a box filled with more
than 30,000 names to the White
House Wednesday asking Presi
dent Nixon to free Lt. William L.
Calley Jr.
Thompson presented the peti
tions to Harry Dent, an aide to
the President who said the peti
tions “will be on the President’s
desk when he comes in” today
and then forwarded to Calley at
his Ft. Benning residence.
The mayor said Calley had
expressed the desire to have the
petitions “as a personal mo
menta” during a 40-minute visit
he had with the young officer
Tuesday.
Thompson organized a rally 1
for Calley in Macon last Satur- i
day and said thousands had I

Thompson said the movement
in support of Calley was started
by radio station WBML and then
joined by virtually everyone in
the Georgia city. He said he
and the people of Macon felt
Calley should be freed because
“we called on him to fight an
undefined, unorthodox, peculiar
war.”
The mayor said he personally
believed “this man was ordered
to go into My Lai—it was a
Viet Cong village—and destroy
it” and was only carrying out
his orders.
Thompson said 26,800 names
were collected over five and one
half days and enough additional
signatures were added in At
lanta, and on the flight here to
push the number to more than
30,000,
ments returned by a Wheeler
County grand jury.
Sheriff Morris Johnson said

Professors
evacuated
ATHENS, Ga. (UPI)-Dr.
Burch Schneider of the Univer
sity of Georgia said Wednesday
that four assistant professors
assigned to an agricultural re
search program in East Pakistan
have been evacuated because of
a budding civil war.
Schneider said the four and
their familys were taken to Ka
rachi, West Pakistan, where
they were housed at the Ameri
can Embassy. He was informed
of the action by the U. S. State
Department.
The four were identified as
Dr. Robert A. Mcßorie and Dr.
John H. Sullivan of the Univer
sity of Georgia and Dr. Stanley
W. Jacklin and Dr. Cyril
Brown, both of Fort Valley.
They had been assigned to the
Agriculture University of East
Pakistan at Mynensingh “to de
