Harris elated
over sweep
By JACK WILKINSON
ATLANTA (UPI (-Manager
Luman Harris, elated over a
slump-breaking three-game
sweep of the Los Angeles
Dodgers, thinks his Atlanta
Braves are at last “getting in
the groove.”
Orlando Cepeda, whose tower
ing two-run homer was the
telling blow in Sunday's 4-1
conquest of the Dodgers, calls
it “momentum.”
Whatever it is, the Braves
embark today on a seven-game
West Coast road trip and if
history repeats, they’ll return
home May 14 in excellent
shape. The Braves are 6-2 on
the road so far this season but
had lost five of six on the
current home stand, including
three straight to San Francisco,
before the Dodgers came in to
change things.
“Now we seem to be getting
the breaks that everyone else
was getting,” Cepeda said.
“We’ve got the momentum
going now. I think the big thing
was the way we came from
behind Saturday night. It
means something when you can
hit against the Dodgers as
we’ve been doing.”
Aaron had reached base with
his 543rd career double, moving

him past Harry Heilmann into
sole possession of eighth place
on the all-time National League
two-base hit list. Aaron later, in
the eighth inning, poled his 11th
homer of the season—6o3rd
overall—to end the scoring and
continue the hottest early
season homer pace of his
career.
Reed gave up only five hits
and was in command most of
the way. He lost his shutout on
a hard-to-take homer by
shortstop Maury Wills, who hit
his first roundtripper of the
year and only his 18th in a 13-
year span.
Much has been said of the
obvious lift Reed and relief
pitcher Cecil Upshaw have
given the Braves—Reed did not
pitch until June 19 last season
after breaking his collar bone
in spring training and Upshaw
lost the whole campaign after
severely injuring a finger on his
pitching hand. Upshaw is 5-2
with one save in nine appearan
ces and considers it “a
miracle” things are going so
well.
Harris couldn’t be happier
with the way things are going,
too. In addition to Reed Sunday,
he got a strong route-going job
by Phil Niekro Friday night
“I think our pitchers are now
where I thought they would be
before the season,” Harris said
Sunday. “I think now we’re
getting in the groove
“There’s no doubt having
Reed and Upshaw from the
beginning definitely has made
us better. It’s helped us a
helluva lot
“But it’s not just pitching.
Our defense is better, no doubt
about that either. Our speed is
a big factor and the way Bob
Didier has been going, we’ve
got us a hitting catcher.”
Nowhere is the new found
speed more evident than in
rookie Ralph Garr, whose .400
batting average leads the
league.
The Braves, who still trail
San Francisco by 5 1-2 games,
open their western swing at San
Diego Tuesday night where Pat
Jarvis is scheduled to oppose
Tom Phoebus. After three with
the Padres, it’s on to San
Francisco with a big chance to
make up ground, then to Los
Angeles.
