ed today by Sears, Roebuck &
Company. The Thomaston firm
makes sheets and pillow cases
for Sears.
Danny D. Seaton of Chicago,
Sears’ national sheet buyer,
presented a Sears “Symbol of
Excellence” plaque during a
ceremony held in the Sewing
Room of Thomaston Mills,
Bleachery Division. The plaque
was accepted by Wm. H. High
tower, Jr., President of
Thomaston Mills, on behalf of
the entire plant staff.
The award was one of 358
Sears is presenting this year to
suppliers judged most outstand
ing among its 13,000 major
merchandising sources.

funeral services held Sunday
afternoon and work crews were
expected to complete repairs

gouged out of U.S. Highway 78
by the explosion.
Carter, who circled the area
in an airplane Saturday morn
ing, said he would decide on
an investigation after receiving
a report from Col. Ray Pope,
head of the State Department
of Public Safety.
The governor said he is
especially concerned about pos
sible “transgressions of the
law” regarding the vehicular
transportation of dynamite and
British Parliament member, who returned from a 10-day
visit to Washington, said he was “not quite so hopeful” as
before that the U.S. Congress will guarantee a $240 million
loan for the plane. (UPI)

and merchandise development
and treating laboratory. The
committee screened nomina
tions from Sears 49 national
buying departments.
Thomaston Mills is head
quartered in Thomaston,
Georgia with two spinning and
weaving plants and a finishing
and sewing plant in Thomaston.
The Company has another
spinning and weaving plant in
Griffin, Ga. Thomaston Mills
was founded in 1899 and has

dynamite caps together on
Georgia highways.
The truck, carrying 20,000
pounds of explosives on the
main road artery between At
lanta and Birmingham, Ala.,
exploded after a collision with
a car caused the traitor to

After presentation of the
“Symbol of Excellence” Award
in the Sewing Room, a luncheon
was held at the Hotel Upson for
officials of Sears, Roebuck,
Thomaston Mills and special
guests.
“I think we need to look at
the case in Waco and find out
whether the law was broken,”
Carter said, “find out why no
safety precautions were taken,
and why the driver of the truck
was not effectively trained in
blocking off the area.”

A 17-year-old Waycross youth,
Billy Williams, was riding on
the hood of a car on a dirt
road south of Waycross Sunday
night when he fell off and was
run over.
His death raised to eleven
the number of persons killed in
accidents in Georgia over the
weekend.
The worst single accident oc
curred late Friday night in a
thundering explosion of a truck
carrying 20,000 pounds of ex
plosives at Waco. Five persons
died in that accident.
The dead included the driver
of a Volkswagen which collid
ed with the truck — Talmadge
L. “Skinny” Adams of Waco.
Two firemen attempting to
extinguish the fire that broke
out after the crash also died.
They were David L. Smith of
Bremen and Doyal T. Bell of
Waco. Cleve Heath, 46, a
wrecker driver from Bremen,
and Troy F. Allen, 24, of Waco,
also died in the explosion,
which dug a hole 20 feet deep
and 100 feet wide on U.S. 78,
the main corridor from Atlan
ta to Birmingham, Ala.
Other weekend victims includ
ed John Henry Kendrick, 37, of
Griffin; Elizabeth Scott, 3, of
Lumpkin; Joseph R. Ramirez,
20, a Fort Gordon soldier;
Ralph Kahle, 29, of Lilburn, and
Willie A. Dentley, 52, of Abbe
ville.

S. Methodist
open meeting
ST. STIMONS ISLAND, Ga.
(UPI) — South Georgia United
Methodists opened their 105th
annual conference today with
some 800 delegates on hand for
the five-day meeting.
The assembly, scheduled to
hear reports, outline a new
church calendar, elect general
and jurisdictional conference
delegates and assign pastors to
churches, will also honor the
200th anniversary of an early
founder, Francis Asbury.
Asbury, a British Methodist
minister, was the first Metho
dist bishop elected in America
and played a major role in
spreading Methodism through
out the nation.
Bishop John Owen Smith,
head of the 392,000 United Meth
odists in Georgia, will preside
over the meeting of the South
Georgia Conference which in
cludes 145,000 members. Smith
will be retiring next year.
