ATLANTA (UPI)-It won’t
faze Lost Tree Village that its
most famous resident, Jack
Nicklaus, didn’t win the Atlanta
Golf Classic title. After all,
Gardner Dickinson kept it in
the neighborhood.
Dickinson, a 43-year-old ve
teran who has been just a face
in the crowd the last couple of
years, beat the always-favored
Nicklaus on the first hole of a
sudden-death playoff Sunday
when Jack booted a gimmie
putt.
Nicklaus, Dickinson and Gary
Player, who fell out of the lead
with a bogey the previous hole,
were all tied at 12-under going
into the final regulation hole of
the $125,000 tournament.
All three deared the lake
guarding the green on the par
five hole with their second
shots -Nicklaus landing within
eagle range 25 feet to the right
of the pin and the other two
landing in a sand trap 10 feet in
front of the pin.
Nicklaus’ putt was three
inches short and he settled for
a birdie. Player blasted out to
within five feet of the cup but
lipped his putt to fall out of
contention. Dickinson put his

scored five runs in the first
inning Sunday and went on to
beat the McDonough Bucks 11-6
in the opening game of the
Towafiga Senior Babe Ruth
League.
Gary Mullis was Griffin’s
winning pitcher. He fired a five
hitter, striking out 11 and
walked five.
Randy Moss started for the
Bucks. Henry McKibben
worked in relief.
Griffin rapped eight hits off
the two pitchers, who struck out
seven and walked six.
Mullis struck out the side in
the first inning before his
teammates staked him to the
five run cushion. Griffin scored
the runs without a hit. Five
walks and three McDonough
errors were responsible for
them.
Post 15 added two more runs
in the fourth and four in the
fifth.
McDonough scored twice in
tlie third, two more in the sixth
and two in the seventh.
George Peurifoy hit a double
and single for Post 15. Rollin

in.
Dickinson, whose last of
seven previous victories in 19
tour years was in the 1969
Colonial at Fort Worth, was
only 10 feet away with his
approach shot on the extra
hole, while Nicklaus, reigning
British Open and PGA champ,
overshot the green.
“It was a good wedge shot,
but the ball took a bad slip and
ran 23 or 24 feet past the flag,”
Nicklaus said.
Nicklaus rolled up to within
three feet and waited. Gardner
missed the 10-footer, settled for
a par and then got ready to
move on to the next hole.
But Nicklaus missed and
Dickinson, who had been 53rd
on this year’s money list with
only $21,439 and 78th all last
year when he won only $28,471,
instantly became $25,000 richer.
Nicklaus got a $14,300 conso
lation prize to raise his total
past the $146,000 mark in just
10 tournament appearances.
Nicklaus and Dickinson both
live in Lost Tree in North Palm
Beach, Fla., although Dickinson
says, “Jack lives in the high

Richie Allen, the Los Angeles

went into his disappearing act
again Sunday and wound up
making the New York Mets’
National League Eastern Divi
sion lead vanish.
Allen was penciled in as a
starter in left field but could
not be found at game time. So
Dodger Manager Walter Alston
inserted Bill Russell, batting
.207, in Allen’s slot and he
responded with a triple, double
and single to lift Los Angeles to
a 4-3 victory over the Mets.
The loss dropped New York
to third place in the NL East
behind St. Louis and Pittsburgh
and brought the second-place
Dodgers to within eight games
of San Francisco in the West.

Allen explained his absence,
claiming he had ducked into a
hallway during old timers’ day
ceremonies and did not realize
tlie game had started.
Russell’s double ignited a
three-run rally in the fourth
inning after New York had
taken a 2-0 lead in the top half
of the inning and the young
outfielder drove across the
winning run in the fifth when
he followed Willie Davis’ infield
hit with a triple.
Elsewhere in the NL, San

Pittsburgh edged Houston 9-8,
