Braves win after
blowing 4 run lead
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI )-If tonight’s
final game of the series be
tween the Atlanta Braves and
the St. Louis Cardinals is any
thing like the first two, it will
be a dandy.
The Braves blew a four-run
lead for the second night in a
row Thursday. But, unlike Mon
day night when they lost, 7-6,
in 10 innings, the Braves came
bouncing back to win, 8-7, in 10.
Tuesday night’s game was al
most a carbon copy of Mon
day’s. The Braves were leading
7-3 behind the strong pitching of
Pat Jarvis going into the eighth
inning.
Then:
Lou Brock led off with a dou
ble, Matty Alou singled and Ted
Simmons singled to make the
score 7-4.
That was all for Jarvis and
in came Hoyt Wilhelm, the 47-
year-old knuckleballer who was
making his 1,043 rd major league
pitching appearance but only
his first this year.
Joe Torre, the one - time
Brave, greeted Wilhelm with a
line shot that bounced off the
first base bag. Earl Williams,
now playing third since Clete
Boyer is gone, grabbed the ball
and had only to step on third to
end the threat.
But rookie Williams threw,
wildly, instead to first, allowing
Alou and Simmons to score and
when Orlando Cepeda then
threw the ball over the catcher’s
head, Torre made it all the way
home.

That possibility arose Tues
