Varsalles is back
By DAVID MOFFTT
UPI Sports Writer
ALTNATA (UPI) - Remem
ber Zolio Versalles?
He’s the Cuban shortstop who
was named Most Valuable Play
er in the American League back
in 1965, the year he led the Min
nesota Twins to the pennant, and
later faded into obscurity when
a slipped disc almost ended his
baseball career.
Well, Zolio is back.
The Atlanta Braves brought
him up a couple of weeks ago
from the Mexican League and
the way he’s been playing the
last few nights it looks like he’s
got a steady job in the majors
again.
The 3tyear-old Versalles, who
had four hits in Monday night’s
game, drove in three runs with
a single and a sacrifice fly and
made some sparkling plays
Wednesday night as the Braves
beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-
3.
“He’s really surprised the
heck out of me,” said Braves
Manager Luman Harris. “We
figured he could play short or
third, but we didn’t expect him
to be this sharp. And, now that
he’s starting to hit...”
Versalles, who spent 10 years
in the Washington-Minnesota
system, played with the Dodg
ers in 1968, the Indians in 1969
and, for 31 games, with the new
Washington Senators in 1969.
“My back was really bother
ing me,” Versalles said. “It got
so bad that some mornings I
couldn’t even wash my face.

Versalles joined Gomer Pala
cio of the AAA Mexican League
for the last three and a half
months of the 1970 season, bat
ting .326 and hitting 21 home
runs.
“The other fellows kept say
ing to me, ‘boy, I don’t know
what you are doing here. The
way you are playing, you be
long back up there in the
States.’
“I thought about that a lot,”
Versalles said. “I knew I was
feeling good and I was playing
like I used to. When I started
well again this year, I figured it
was time to return.
“I told those people that I
wasn’t going to play in Mexico
any more and that they’d bet

“But they replied that none of
the major league teams had
asked about me.

NHSACA talks
about drugs
ATLANTA (UPI) - Resolu
tions involving the issues of
drugs among athletes and col
legiate recruiting rules were ex
pected to come up today before
the annual meeting of the Na
tional High School Atheletic
Coaches Association (NHSACA).
Some 700 coaches from across
the country are attending the
conference, being held in con
junction with the meeting of the
Georgia Athletic Coaches Asso
ciation.
Dwight Keith, NHSACA execu
tive secretary, said drug and
recruiting problems would be
discussed at Thursday’s session
along with a resolution propos-
league in Puerto Rico and I had
had some feelers from Washing
ton.”
Versalles telephoned the
Braves and was invited up for
a “tryout.”
“Our people had him working
out for three or four days be
fore it was decided to buy up
his contract,” Harris said. “We
didn’t just take him on a
hunch.”
Versalles picked a good time
to contact the Braves because
the team was having trouble set
tling on a shortstop and the de
parture of Clete Boyer also cre
ated a void at third.
“We just might try Versalles
at third,” said Harris. “After
all, we’ve got Marty Perez and
Gil Garrido to play short.”
If Harris makes that move,
the Braves would have an all-
Latin infield with Orlando Cepe
da and Felix Millan, both na
tives of Puerto Rico, at first
and second respectively.
“I don’t care where they play
me,” said Versalles. “I’m just
glad to be back.”
The Braves, in winning the
Cardinal series two games to
one, pounded out 37 hits and

‘How do you get Helms, Rose? 9 l
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPl)—The
Milwaukee Brewers were dis
cussing Alex Johnson and
whether or not to make any
kind of bid for him. Dave
Bristol felt he could be a plus
saying Johnson gave him little
or no trouble when he played
for him with Cincinnati ...
“Guys like Rose and Helms
knew exactly how to keep him
happy and they always got him
to put out,” Bristol said ...
“Fine,” shot back Frank Lane,
Milwaukee’s Baseball boss,
“Now tell me how I go about
getting Rose and Helms from
the Reds ...”
Nobody can run down old
man George Halas around Gale
Sayers. “I know a lot of people
say he’s a cheapskate,” Sayers
says about the Chicago Bears’
guiding genius, “but I consider
him one of the finest indivi
duals I’ve ever met in my life.
He’s not that tight with money
either. It just depends on the
circumstances. I can take the
case of my roomie, Brian
Piccolo, before he died. George
Halas was fighting him for SSOO
at contract time but then when
pick got sick like he did,
George never made a big thing
about it or told anyone but he
paid all the hospital bills and
funeral expenses...”
Dave Hill is a fine golfer and
one of the most refreshing
personalities on the tour but his
$1 million suit against the PGA
for harassing him from making
a living has me a txt puzzled.
Before instituting suit, Hill told
the PGA’s tournament players
division he wished to appeal his
latest fine. A meeting was set
up and Hill was invited to give
his side. He never showed up ...
I’m no lawyer but I’ve got a
pretty good idea of what Dave
Hill is going to get out of filing
that suit. Practice ...
The best yardstick on a new
superstar is what his own
teammates think of him and
with the Oakland A’s lefty Vida
Blue is top drawer ... “I give
him all the credit in the
world,” says third baseman Sal
Bando. “With all this, he has
kept a level head, he has tried
to cooperate with everybody, he
hasn't given anyone the cold
shoulder and he’s not the
cliquish type if you know what
I mean—he doesn’t hang
around with any one or two
guys all the time. He’s very
serious about everything he
does. I remember in one game
I told him don’t ever take
anything for granted. He looked
at me and said, ‘You know I
don’t.’” ...
Mat Snell, the New York
Jets’ running back, likes
Griffin Daily News
George Sauer Jr., as a player
and a person and hopes the
Jets’ wide receiver changes his
mind about quitting. Sauer
claims football has become a
cold business he doesn’t enjoy
anymore, but Snell makes good
sense when he says: “Sure it’s
a business. We’re in business to
make money but the game also
provides entertainment for mil
lions and I think George may
be losing sight of that fact. As
far as football building charac
ter is concerned, he may be
looking for meanings and
purposes which simply aren’t
there.” ...
