Just one of many
Clete Boyer: ‘Why me? 9
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Sports Writer
NEW YORK (UPl)—Clete
Boyer has only one question.
“Why me?”
I can readily understand him
asking that question because
the last time I looked it still
wasn’t against the law in this
country for a man to bet with
another, certainly baseball isn’t
above the law of the land.
Clete Boyer’s knucles were
rapped because somebody blew
the whistle on him.
He knows he was “turned in”
and he’s pretty sure he knows
the guy who did it.
It wasn’t Paul Richards, the
Atlanta baseball boss with
whom he has had his differen
ces.
Boyer Admits Betting
“I’d go play golf with him
today but he’d have to give me
three or four a side,” Boyer
says, meaning it.
What Boyer is burning to
know is why he was singled out
from among 600 others when it
was palpably plain to him as
well as anybody else that he’s
not the only professional athlete
in baseball, football, basketball
or any other sport you care to
name who makes a bet of some
kind now and then.
Clete Boyer doesn’t pose as
any saint.
He admits he bet on football
games. Basketball games, too.
But never on baseball games.
How big a bettor was he?
He bet SSO, SIOO, and $l5O.
That’s how big.

Clubs Have “Pools”
If he wants the answer to his
question of “why me?” here it
is: His crime wasn’t so much,
making those bets as it was not
using his head.
What’s more, he knows it.
So does every ballplayer who
ever pulled on a pair of spikes
in a major league clubhouse.
It’s common knowledge that
everytime there’s a big horse
race like the Kentucky Derby
or the Preakness, or a big golf
tournament like the U.S. Open,
most clubs have a “pool” in the
clubhouse with players paying
$5 or $lO for the privilege of
pulling a piece of paper out of a
hat.
That’s
So is card playing which
flourishes in many clubhouses.
Bowie Kuhn knows this as
well as Clete Boyer does, but
he did nothing about it until
someone blew the whistle on
Boyer.
Boyer’s troubles mushroomed
astroundingly since the Braves
released him a week ago
following a newspaper story in
which he ripped Richards and
Luman Harris, the Braves’
manager.
The story came out at a
particularly bad time for Boyer
inasmuch as he was in the
throes of obtaining a divorce
from his wife Marilyn. The
couple have four children and
Wednesday was their 16th
wedding anniversary.
When the newspaper story
concerning Boyer’s critical
game series in the Astrodome.
Tom Kelley pitched a strong
two-hitter for eight innings
against the Astros, but got into
trouble to Cesar Cedeno and
Denis Menke that brought one
run home.
Cecil Upshaw relieved Kelley
and retired the side for his sev-

remarks first appeared, the
angry Richards called him in
Montreal where he was with
the Braves and told the 34-year
old third baseman he was going
to take some of his money.
Claims Friendly Bet
“Paul, I don’t give a bleep,”
Boyer replied, thoroughly de
feated. “What you don’t get,
Marilyn’s gonna get anyway.
Take all you want.”
There had been some cool
ness on Boyer’s part toward
Richards anyway since an
episode of four years ago which
dealt with Boyer's older broth
er, Cloyd, a minor league
pitching coach with the
Yankees. There were other
things, too. Like the Braves
taking $25 out of each paycheck
because Boyer refused to get on
line to pay his “extras”
whenever the club checked out
of a hotel.
Clete Boyer simply let his
resentment spill over when he
gave that story to a sports
writer two weeks ago. The odd
enth save.
The Braves jumped on Hous
ton starter Larry Dierker for
both of their runs in the first in
ning. Marv Staehle singled and
Hank Aaron tripled him home.
Aaron then scored on a single
by Orlando Cepeda.
Dierker settled down after that
and allowed the Braves only
three more hits, but it was too
late and he suffered his second
loss in 12 decisions.

part about the whole thing was
that the writer had set out to
do a story on Bob Aspromonte,
formerly with the Braves and
now with the Mets.
Boyer clings to one point in
his latest involvement.
“I bet with a fellow I thought
was a friend,” he says. “They
(the Commissioner’s office)
made it look like I bet with a
bookmaker.”
The SI,OOO fine doesn’t bother
Boyer particularly.
“I’ve lost money in the
grocery business, in oil wells, in
different things,” he says.
“Even if I do wind up with any
money I know I can’t take it
with me. I just wanna have a
little fun in life before I go.”
Bqyer adds he has always
made most of his own
decisions.
“I might add 99 per cent of
’em have turned out wrong,” he
laughs.
He could be lucky this time.
Kuhn probably will make the
Braves give him back a
personal check for SIO,OOO
Boyer gave them before he was
given his release last week, and
he’ll probably catch on with
some club soon.
No matter what though,
Boyer keeps on wondering
“why me?”
It’s a good question. The
funny part about it is even
when he gets the right answer
it somehow seems to come out
a little wrong. Clete Boyer used
poor judgment but he really
didn’t do anything legally
wrong.
Blalock,
Ahern lead
ladies PGA
By DICK DEW
UPI Sports Writer
SUTTON, Mass. (UPI)-The
unheralded youngsters get an
other crack at their well-heeled
senior contemporaries today in
the second round of the rich
LPGA championship.
Youth in the persons of 25-
year-old Jane Blalock and
Kathy Ahern, 22, carried a one
stroke lead out of the opening
round at Pleasant Valley
Country Club Thursday as one
of the tournaments’ top veter
ans, 1970 champion Shirley
Englehom, was forced to call it
quits.
Miss Englehorn, 30, had to
take herself out of the Eve
Cigarette, sponsored tour
nament when the ankle injury
she suffered six years ago
caught up with her.
Her voice breaking and the
ailing ankle propped on a chair,
the winner of three of the seven
previous tournaments played on
the same course joked “I feel
like Canonero” while admitted
die couldn’t continue play
despite the vacation she had
taken to rest for the tourney.
Shirley used a pair of
crutches to start her trip back
to Caldwell, Ohio, for treatment
she estimated would keep her
off file ladies’ pro tour for four
to seven months.
The Misses Blalock and
Ahern, meanwhile, had plenty
of others to worry about in the
17th annual LPGA Champion
ship which will confer a 37,950
check on the winner.
Kathy Whitworth, winner of
two straight tournaments and
the LPGA’s all-time earning
leader, and another strong
swinger, Donna Caponi, were
the only other players to break
par-73 and rank one stroke off
the pace.
A record field of 76 assaulted
the pin placements in the
opening round. “A 75 on this
course today is the equivalent
of a 68,” Miss Englehom said,
after withdrawing from the
competition with a 4-over 40 on
the front nine.
“I am very sorry to
withdraw,” Shirley said, “but
the whole leg just went numb. I
couldn’t feel it.”
Joking that “I think I know
every doctor in every state”
while she awaited a physician,
the defending LPGA champion
said her withdrawal was “one
of the greatest disappoint
ments” of her golfing career.
“Once it’s taken care of, I’U
be back. I came here to win,
I’ve won here before and I’ll be
back again to play,” the
spectacled Miss Englehom said.
