Stargell belts
Braves, 11*2
PITTSBURGH (UPl)—Willie
Stargell, belting his 29th home
run of the season, teamed with
Manny Sanguillen to drive in
eight runs and the Pittsburgh
Pirates pulled the National
League’s first triple play this
season Friday night in an 11-2
rout of the Atlanta Braves.
Stargell added two singles and
his four runs batted in boosted
the all-star leftfielder’s totals to
85, as many as he had all sea
son.
Stargell’s homer, which came
with two on in the sixth, was
his ninth this season against

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (UPI) -
Qualifying for the third event in
ttie Canadian - American Chal
lenge Cup series gets under
way today at Road Atlanta,
with reigning champion Team
McLaren and former world
champion Jackie Stewart the
top contenders.
Although the practice runs
before*Sunday’s race were off
the record of 117.35 miles per
nour set by Vic Elford last year
lap times dropped steadily
toward the end of the session
and it was expected the Elford
record would be matched or
bettered.
Oliver’s Shadow, an ultra-low
profile, two-foot high car, ap
peared out of its league Friday,
possibly because of problems
with the fuel pressure that
forced Oliver out of the last
race at St. Jovite.
Huhne and Revson in the Mc-
Laren MBF cars and Stewart in
the Lola turned in about the
same times.
The older McLaren M6B
driven by Bob Brown of Hunt
ington, N.Y., was a surprise as
the fourth fastest car in the
practice session.
The 180,000 Road Atlanta
event is the third on the 10 race
circuit. Huhne currently leads
the series, with teammate Rev
son second and Stewart third
after his win over Team Mc-
Laren at St. Jovite.
The Lola victory signaled
what may be the first serious
challenge to Team McLaren,
which has dominated Group 7
racing for the past five years.
After blowing the engine in
his McLaren MBE Friday, El
ford put in a frantic order for
a replacement, which was ex- *
pected to be installed and ready
in time for qualifying.

SOUTHPORT, England—Lee Trevino gives his ball a critical

when he made a bogey. (UPI)
In 20th inning
Angel beats
Angels, 1-0
By JOE CARNICELLI
UPI Sports Writer
It took an Angel to stop the
Angels.
Angel Mangual stroked a two
out single in the bottom of the
20th inning early Saturday
morning to life the Oakland
Athletics to a 1-0 victory over
the California Angels in a
record-shattering five hour, five
minute marathon.
Mangual’s hit ended the game
in the last inning possible
because of the American
League’s curfew rule and came
at 1:08 a.m. PDT. The game
would have been resumed later
today if Mangual had been
retired.
The clubs broke two major
league strikeout records, thanks
in large to a 17-strikeout
performance by Oakland’s Vida
Blue, who went the first 11
innings. The two teams set a
combined strikeout mark of 43,
breaking the record of 36 set in
1964 by the New York Mets and
the San Francisco Giants. The
Angels’ 26 strikeouts also broke
the record of 22 set by the Mets
in that game.
Billy Cowan of the Angels
earned the dubious distinction
of tying a major league mark
by striking out six times.
The Oakland run came after
reliver Mel Queen hit Curt
Blefary with a pitch and Dick
Green singled. Pinch-hitter Jim
Hunter, scheduled to start
today’s game, struck out before
Mangual’s deciding hit.
Elsewhere in the American
League Friday night, Baltimore
beat Cleveland 4-1, Detroit
edged Washington 1-0, Chicago
beat Milwaukee 4-1, New York
downed Boston 5-2 and Kansas
City trimmed Minnesota 6-3.
In National League play, St.
Louis swept Houston 5-2 and 9-
5, Montreal defeated Philadel
phia 3-0 on Steve Renko’s one
hitter, Pittsburgh clubbed At
lanta 11-2, Cincinnati topped
New York 6-4 and San Diego
beat Chicago twice, 1-0 and 7-2.
Jim Palmer pitched a five
hitter and Baltimore scored
three runs in the first inning
with the help of a pair of
passed balls by Chuck Hinton to
beat the Indians. Don Buford
led off the first with a double,
took third on a passed ball and
scored on an infield out. Elrod
Hendricks singled, took third on
Merv Rettenmund’s hit and
scored on Hinton’s second
passed ball. A pair of walks
and a hit batsman forced in the
third run.
Ed Brinkman’s one-out sui
cide squeeze in the 11th inning
gave Detroit its victory over
the Senators. Jim Northrup
opened the 11th with a single
and advanced to third on a wild
pitch and a fly ball before
Brinkman’s bunt.
Joe Horlen pitched a seven
hitter and Carlos May drove in
two runs in a four-run second
inning as the White Sox beat
Milwaukee. May had a two-run
single in the inning.
Mel Stottlemyre pitched a
four-hitter and snapped a 2-2 tie
in the seventh inning with a
home run in the Yankees’
victory over Boston.
Back-to-back homers by Fred
Patek and Paul Schaal with two
out in the ninth inning boosted
Kansas City past the Twins.
Both homers came off Twins’
starter Jim Perry and broke a
3-3 tie.

Lee Trevino
learns secret
SOUTHPORT, England (UPI)
—Lee Trevino, leading the
British Open Golf Championship
for the second successive year
after 54 holes, goes into the
final round at Royal Birkdale
today with a set plan to win.
“The secret of this course is
the front nine and I aim to play
it to save par,” the U.S. Open
titleholder said after shooting a
third round 69 Friday which
gave him a one stroke lead at
208—11-under-par.
“I know I can birdie all those
par five holes on the back nine
and I figure my chances of
winning are exceptional. My
record for the tournament
shows it,” Trevino added.
Trevino said that although he
was 11 under he had taken 11
bogeys in the tournament and
nearly all of them were on the
front nine holes.
‘‘But remember this,” the
“Super-Mex” said. “I was
playing them too boldly hoping
to get birdies before.”

Atlanta Falcons next week.
Lowe who was drafted in the
12th round by the Falcons after
a tremendous career at Ft.
Valley State College, will report
to training camp at Greenville,
S.C. on July 19.
The wide receiver turned
down two Falcon offers. He
received another offer this
week. His father, O. G. Lowe, a
Griffin taxi driver, said his son
probably would sign it.
Senior BR
games
tonight
American Legion Post 15 will
play Jackson here tonight in the
final game of the Senior Babe
Ruth season.
Jackson is currently leading
the league. However, if Post 15
wins tonight, the two teams will
be tied for first.
The Griffin Lions will play
McDonough a doubleheader
tonight in Jackson.
If the Griffin Lions sweep the
doubleheader then they will be
in a tie for first place, provided
of course, that Post 15 beats
Jackson.

The greatest threat to Trevi
no, lidding for his third title in
four weeks, comes from star
Asian golfer Liang Huan Lu
and Britain’s Tony Jacklin,
both one stroke behind.
The three had a neck and
neck struggle throughout the
third round with first one and
then the other taking the lead
throughout the day.
Lu, from Taiwan, is playing
in only his second open and is a
great favorite with the gallery.
He believes he can win with a
“little luck”.
“I do my best, I can win, I
know,” he said after firing a 69
to stay up with the leaders.
Jacklin, winner in 1969 and
last year’s U.S. Open victor,
spent an hour on the practice
fairway after scoring 70.
“I don’t think I have ever
played so badly and still hit 70
in my life,” the 27-year-old
Englishman said.
Trevino and Jacklin had
shared the lead a stroke in
tournament will run through
Thursday.
The winner and runner-up
here will compete in the State
Tournament for 14 and 15-year
old players starting July 19 in
Newnan.
The district tournament for
13-year-old players will begin
Monday in Newnan. Griffin will
play Jackson and Newnan takes
on Fayette in the first round.
The winner and runner-up
will compete in the state
tournament the week of July 19
in LaGrange.

front of Lu at the start of the
third round and had Argenti
nian Roberto de Vicenzo and
South African Gary Player
breathing down their necks only
a stroke further back.
But their cracking pace told
on the latter pair. Although
both managed sub-par rounds,
Player finished with a 71 at 212,
four strokes back of Trevino
and the happy Latin American
had a 72 for 213.
Player also went out for
more practice complaining that
he was “duck-hooking” the ball
too much.
Surprise rounds of the day
came from rising 23-year-old
Englishman Peter Oosterhuis,
who posted a course record 66
to finish at 213, and American
born British citizen Craig
Defoyp whose 68 placed him
level with Player at 212.
Titleholder Jack Nicklaiis
began the day three strokes off
the pace but a 72 put him back
in the pack with 214.
“If I shoot a great round
Saturday, I guess I can still win
it,” he said. “I’ve been playing
great golf but I just can’t get
any putts in.”
“Let whoever thinks that
come out and then play it
himself,” the 31-year-old “Gol
den Bear” said.
Sixty-four players with scores
of 224 or better qualified for the
final day’s play and they
included 35 overseas competi
tors.
The Americans include
Charles Coody, who shot a 70
and is at 215, Bert Yancey, 71,
and Dave Stockton, 68, who are
at 216 and Billy Casper, who
carded a 75 and is at 217.
Three others under par at 218
are last year’s runner-up Doug
Sanders, John Miller and Howie
Johnson.
