Griffin is idle because of its
excellent play so far in the
double-elimination tournament.
Griffin beat Rockmart 13-6
here last night and now is the
only unbeaten team in the play-
offs.
The winner of today’s game
between Jackson and Rockmart
will play Griffin in the finals.
It will take two straight losses
to eliminate the local team.
Griffin will play either Jack
son or Rockmart tomorrow at 5
p.m. in the finals. If Griffin
loses that game, another will be
played at 7:30 to decide the Dis
trict championship.
Chude Dunn pitched Griffin to
the 134 win over Rockmart. He

NEW YORK (UPl)—The New
York Yankees purchased south

Syracuse farm dub Monday
and optioned pitcher Gary
Jones to the same International
League team. Closter had a 7-5
record with Syracuse while
Jones appeared in 12 Yankee
games this season without a
decision.

singled.
Griffin scored four runs in the
first, two in the second and six
in the third.
Rockmart scored three in the
first, one in the second and two
in the third. Dunn held the visi
tors scoreless over the next four
innings.
Crawford got Griffin off to a
big start with a bases loaded
double in the first. Three runs
scored on the hit.
Harold Griggs hit a double
and single for Rockmart.
Wayne Sanders hit two singles
and Kenny Mitchell, Doyle
Thomas and Greg Ellis singled.
Jackson shutout Fayette
County 9-0 in the first game.
Andy Crumbley was die winn
ing pitcher. He allowed only
four hits struck out three and
walked two.
Ken Chitwood was Fayette’s
starting and losing pitcher.
Norman Jones took over in the
second. They gave up a dozen
hits.
Don McKibben hit two singles
for Jackson. Joey Kuhn and
Ronnie Vining doubled and
Ronnie Burch, Andy Crumbley,
Tim Moss, Terry Wilson, Mike
Phillips, Jim Montgomery, Oz
Dover and Steve Smith singled.
Norman Jones, Bruce Arnold,
Ken Chitwood and Scott
Williams singled for Fayette.
The winner and runner-up in
the district tournament ad
vance to the state playoff.

Griffin defeated Newnan 7-6
in eight innings last night to ad
vance to the finals.
Jackson will play Newnan to
night at 7 o’clock in the loser’s
Lowe signs
Falcon pact
Ronnie Lowe, a graduate of
Fairmont High and Fort Valley
State College, is now an Atlanta
Falcon.
Lowe and the Falcons came to
terms yesterday and the
Griffinite was signed to a pro
football contract.
Lowe was the next to last
draftee to sign with the Falcons.
Only Joe Profit, the Falcons’
number one draft choice, re
mains unsigned.
“The Falcons and Profit still
have some problems to iron
out,” a spokesman said. If
Profit signed today, he still
would miss the first two weeks
of camp because he’s set to par
ticipate in the college All-Star
game.
Lowe will report to the Fal
cons* training camp Monday
along with 49 other rookies.
(The training camp will be on
the Furman University campus
in Greenville, S.C.)
The Falcons drafted Lowe be
cause of his speed and great
hands. They plan to use him as a
wide receiver.
Lowe caught 31 passes during
his senior year at Fort Valley
State despite missing two
games. He caught 45 his junior
season for 905 yards and eight
MITCHELL WITH BREWERS
MILWAUKEE (UPI) - Out
fielder Bobby Mitchell was
recalled from Syracuse by the
Milwaukee Brewers Monday
and will report to the team in
New York Wednesday. Mitchell
was obtained from the Yankees
on June 7 for Danny Walton.
