New book claims 'Che'
f »
did not die in Bolivia
By THEODORE A. EDIGER
Copley News Service
MIAMI — Mystery and
controversy shroud Che
Guevara in death as they did in
life.
Three and one-half years
after the international
revolutionary fell in Bolivia’s
jungles, a “Che cult” remains
alive among his leftist ad
mirers. While in some other
circles, Guevara is branded a
cold-blooded Communist
villain, in Cuba, he is regarded
as a demigod.
Showing of the Hollywood
made motion picture “Che,”
which stars Omar Sharif in the
title role, has been blocked in
both Uruguay and Miami —for
opposite reasons.
In Montevideo, the
Uruguayan capital, the leftist
terrorists called “Tupamaros”
raided a theater showing the
film. The Tupamaros
destroyed the only copy of the
film in that South American
country. The Cuban news
agency, Prensa Latina, in
reporting the action said the
movie “disparages the per
sonality of Maj. Ernesto (Che)
Guevara."
In Miami, the movie hasn’t
been shown because Cuban
DR. LAWRENCE E. LAMB
Rapid Heart Rate
Can Be Puzzling
Dr. Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
Dear Dr. Lamb—Could you
help my husband? He has
had a complete checkup
even at the Mayo Clinic and
so far there isn’t a doctor
who can help him. He gets
this fast pulse, so fast you
can’t count it. He gets pale
and has to lie down. It lasts
a short time then sometimes
it lasts up to two hours. For
a while he has it every day
then there will be weeks be
fore he has it again. Doctors
told him, he is as healthy as
a horse, and many wish they
had his health. Then why this
pulse? He is 62 years old,
five feet 11 and weighs 205
pounds. He is a bricklayer
but has trouble putting in a
full week because of his fast
pulse. If he didn’t have a
good boss he would have lost
his job long ago.
Dear Reader—One of the
difficulties doctors have in
dealing with this type of
problem is that the patient
always has the problem
when he is not in the doc
tor’s office. Any medical ex
amination, even at the Mayo
Clinic, is just a brief glimpse
of what occurs 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year.
The best approach is to try
to document the nature of
the rapid heart rate. There
are little tape recorders that
people can wear and record
the heart beat for 10 hours
at a time and by changing
the tape, records for days
can be obtained. Unfortu
nately, these are not avail
able in all doctor’s offices

exiles feel it glorifies Che. To
screen it might trigger in
cidents in the refugee capital.
On another front, Cuban
Premier Fidel Castro has
rescinded an offer he made
three years ago to release 100 of
his political prisoners in ex
change for Che’s remains. The
offer had been suggested by the
“Committee of 100," a Cuban
exile group.
A Havana broadcast said
Castro made it “to unmask
Rene Barrientos, then head of
the Bolivian regime.”
The newscast continued:
“The situation in Bolivia today
is completely different. The
people are going through a
revolutionary process.
“No proposal of this type
could be carried out in Cuba
today. Cuba flatly rejects it.”
President Barrientos died in
a helicopter crash in 1969. He
may have carried to his grave
the secret of how and where
Guevara’s body was disposed.
Or some others may know but
won’t tell.
Barrientos* vice president,
Luis Siles Salinas, who held the
presidency briefly in 1969, went
along with the official version
that Che had been buried in an
unmarked grave. So did Gen.
Alfredo Ovando, who threw
and the procedure is expen
sive.
There are several irregu
larities of the heart that
could cause the difficulties
you describe in your hus
band. Many of these exam
ples of “rapid heart action”
occur in people who are
“healthy as a horse." In
others, an over active thyroid
can cause the heart to be
more irritable than normal
and cause such episodes. If
there is no apparent cause
for them that is fine, but
they can still be disabling,
just as you describe in your
husband’s case. Whenever
the heart beats too fast for
any reason it becomes inef
ficient and can actually de
crease the heart’s ability to
pump enough blood. If it
beats fast and in an irregular
manner this is even more
likely to occur. If the heart
can’t pump enough blood, the
brain is affected and a per
son feels faint and may need
to lie down.
Most individuals with this
problem can get some help
from stopping smoking in all
forms, and eliminating cof
fee and other stimulants.
Your husband is also too
heavy for his height and
needs to lose weight. If he
has as many episodes of
rapid heart action as you
describe he should be given
medicine to control his heart
rate or prevent such attacks,
even if he doesn’t have any
other evidence of illness.
Medicines do exist for this
purpose.

Siles out and ran the country
until October, 1970, when his
underling, Gen. Juan Jose
Torres, Barrientos’ army chief
of staff, sent Ovando packing
and took over the government.
One thing seems sure. Che’s
hands, which Bolivian
authorities cut off and
preserved so that fingerprints
could be compared with those
on file with international police
agencies, are now in Cuba.
Barrientos’ interior minister, '■
Antonio Arguedas, the man >
who sent a photographic copy ’
of Che’s diary to Castro, later ;
took the hands and Che’s death ;

there for an extended visit. -
But the speculation won’t die.»
Now a Peruvian writer, ’
Gabriel Ruiz Jaime, has come >
out with a sensational book, *
“El Che Didn’t Die in Bolivia.”'
The author claims that the;
guerrilla chieftain known as*
“Ramon” who was killed in
Bolivia was not Guevara bus
someone who looked like him.;
Ruiz Jaime speculates that*
Guevara may be in a Siberian*
prison.
Ruiz Jaime claims the diaryl
captured in Bolivia was written;;
by Che’s double.
The Peruvian asks: “Why-*
would el Che have written a'-
diary in such detail, even withe
names of persons involved and;*
places where he had re-r
serves?"
A logical question. But for-,
mer fellow revolutionaries of;
Che in Cuba explain that he had *
a penchant for diaries.
And why, the Peruvian
author asks, did Ramon have *
such a small force — “only 45;
men” — if this was to be an ■
important international
operation?
