Orioles 9 pitchers
aim at old record
By JOE CARNICELLI
UPI Sports Writer
Four pitchers from the same
team haven’t won 20 games in
the same season since 1920 but
the Baltimore Orioles have a
solid shot at it if Pat Dobson
stays hot.
Dobson, who started poorly
this season, recorded his eighth
straight victory and 11th of the
season Thursday night and
singled in the decisive run as
the Orioles edged the California
Angels 4-3.
The last quartet to win 20
games each were Urban Faber,
Claude Williams, Dickie Kerr
and Ed Cicotte of the Chicago
White Sox. Williams and Cicotte
were suspended from baseball
following that season for having
been involved in the 1919
“Blade Sox” World Series
scandal.
The Orioles’ starting rotation
is well on its way. Mike Cuellar
and Dave McNally have 13
victories each and Jim Palmer
and Dobson each have won 11.
Dobson singled home Mark
Belanger in a two-run seventh
to give Baltimore a 4-2 lead.
The Angels added a run in the
eighth.
Elsewhere in the American
League, Boston downed Minne
sota 3-0 in 13 innings, Oakland
edged Detroit 3-7, Kansas City
nipped Cleveland 1-0, Milwauk
ee shaded New York 1-0 and
Washington trounced Chicago 8-
3.

Leahy in critical condition
PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI)-
Frank Leahy, the man who
guided Notre Dame to four
national championships in the
late 1940’s and early 1950’5,
remained in critical condition in
St. Vincent Hospital today
following abdominal surgery.
His son, Fred, who flew to
Portland to be at his father’s
bedside, said, “Dad has a weak
heart and he needs blood, but
until he regains some strength,
they can not give him a
transfusion.
“The crisis as of now is how
well the heart can hold up.”
In 13 years of coaching, two
at Boston College and 11 at
Notre Dame, Leahy’s teams
had seven undefeated seasons
and won four national cham
pionships. In 11 years at Notre
Dame his record was 87-11-9,

Archie, Mecom
didn’t bargain
INDIANOLA, Miss. (UPI) -
An attorney for former Ole
Miss quarterback Archie Man
ning said Thursday Manning
has had no contract negotiations
with New Orleans Saints’ own
er John Mecom Jr.
Frank Crosthwait Jr., Man
ning’s attorney and longtime
friend, said “Archie told me by
telephone that he had a social
visit with Mr. Mecom yesterday
but certainly no negotiations
took place.” Crosthwait also
said he had not talked to either
Mecom or general manager Vic
Griffin Daily News
Schwenk.
The Indianola attorney said
he and Manning hope to talk to
Saints’ officials “within the
next few days. I would think
they want to talk to us, but we
have nothing definite.”
New Orleans States - Item
sports editor Peter Finney said
Thursday Manning and Mecom
have been discussing contract
terms of the team’s summer
training camp at Hattiesburg,
Miss.
The newspaper quoted Mecom
as saying “I’m more confident
Friday, July 16,1971

everything will be worked out.
It may take a couple of more
meetings.”
Manning has been at the
Saints camp for the past two
days but has watched the ses
sions from the sidelines. He is
prohibited from working out
with the team until the contract
is signed.
The Saints’ first round draft
choice is reportedly asking for
afour-year contract worth $400,-
000 with provisions for perform
ance bonuses which could total
another $200,000.
Crosthwait said he had re
ceived a letter from Schwenk
last week advising him that the
Saints could not consider Man
ning’s latest proposal which was
submitted on June 17.
