Blue notches 18th
with a one-hitter
By JOE C ARNICELLI
DPI Sports Writer
Vida Blue doesn’t like the
mechanical man tag though
opponents are beginning to
wonder if he’s really human.
Blue pitched a one-hitter
Friday night for his 18th
victory of the season against
only three losses as the
Oakland Athletics beat the
Detroit Tigers 4-0. Tony Tay
lor’s leadoff single in the fourth
inning was the only hit Blue
allowed.
“Twenty victories... that was
what I was aiming for before
the season started, and I still
am,’’ said Blue. “But I’m
getting a little tired of all those
questions about whether I’ll win
30 or 40 or 45. What do people
think I am—a robot?”
Blue did manage to mow
down the Tigers with machine
like precision. He struck out
nine Tigers to boost his major
league strikeout lead to 197 for
193 1-3 innings pitched. The
young left-hander also leads the
majors in shutouts (7), com
plete games (18), victories (18)
and earned run average (1.35).
Rookie George Hendrick pro
vided the offensive strength for
Oakland as the A’s capitalized
on Les Cain’s wildness to score
all their runs in the first inning.

Patriots without
Kapp., temporarily
AMHERST, Mass. (UPI)-
The New England Patriots
were without the services of
quarterback Joe Kapp today
because of a legal snafu over
his contract.
National Football League
Commissioner Pete Rozelle
ruled Friday the 6-foot-2, 215-
pound signal caller had not
signed a regulation contract
and thus was ineligible to
practice with the squad.
The problem closely followed
a paperwork fluke that cost the
Patriots lineman Phil Olsen,
their No. 1 draft pick of last
year who signed with the
Patriots but never played
because of a pre-season injury.
Rozelle’s office ruled two
weeks ago the 6-foot-2, 265-
pounder was a free agent
because of a contract loophole,
clearing the way for his signing
with the Los Angeles Rams, the
team on which his brother
Merlin plays.
Kapp left the training site at
the University of Massachusetts
Friday and was driven to his
home in Milton by Patriots
President Bill Sullivan.
He declined all comment
while carrying his bags into the
house, saying he wanted to
make some telephone calls.
Sullivan, talking with news
men outside, was asked if it
was possible that Kapp might
not play for the Patriots, he
answered, “it is.”
A spokesman for Rozelle’s
office in New York said it was
“normal” for teams to submit
a temporary agreement to the
commissioner. A standard play
er contract, required of all NFL
players, generally follows, he
said.
He also pitched a no-hitter last
season.

Williams catches
Niekro’s Knuckler
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) - If Earl
Williams had any doubts about
becoming a catcher, a success
ful night with knuckleballer
Phil Niekro on the mound
should have bolstered his con
fidence.
“Yes, I’ll have to admit that
it really does help your confi
dence when you are able to
catch the knuckleball,” the
husky young Brave rookie said
after catching Niekro for seven
innings in Atlanta’s 3-1 Friday
night victory over the Los
Angeles Dodgers.
“He threw at least 75 per
cent knuckleballs while I was
in there,” said Williams who
turned 23 Wednesday. “While I
may have had my doubts be
fore, I guess I have to figure
that if I can catch the knuckler,
I shouldn’t have trouble with
other pitches.”
Williams, who also plays third
and first, has been a catcher
for less than a month and had
had only two innings of prev
ious experience with the knuck
ler before Friday night.
“I’d feel a lot better if I had
three boards, one on each side
of me and one between my
legs,” Williams quipped. “Then,
if I missed it, I could get it on
foe rebound. But the big mitt
helps. I just have to learn when
to move with the ball.”
“I admit I was a little
worried about Earl,” said
Niekro who scattered seven sin
gles while picking up his 10th
victory in 18 decisions.
“I wasn’t worried about him
catching me because he’s a big
strong boy with good hands. But
I wasn’t sure how quick he’d
catch on to the pattern.”
Williams had a little trouble
foe first inning, then quickly
settled down.
“He was worrying about
throwing the ball at first,” said
Braves Manager Luman Harris.
“I told him, ‘catch the ball and

self.’”
Niekro, who feels that he is
now throwing as well as he did
in 1969 when he had 23 victor
ies, scored the game’s winning
run in the fifth inning Friday
night as he led off with a sin
gle, moved up on Maury Wills’
error and scampered home
from second on a sharp single
to right by Ralph Garr who
went 3-for-4 and raised his bat
ting average to .329.
“We beat the Dodgers at their
own game,” Harris said jubi
lantly after the Braves got two
of their runs on sacrifice flys
and had a couple of stolen
bases.
The Braves were nursing a
1-0 lead when they tried to
squeeze Sonny Jackson home
from third in the fourth inning.
But Marty Perez popped his
bunt to pitcher Don Sutton and
Jackson never had a chance to
get back.
“We had it all worked out,”
said Harris. “I’m going to work
that play once this year if I
have to go up there and bunt
myself.”
