Disney World: The Flor
(Second of Three Articles.)
By DICK KLEINER
ORLANDO. Fla. - (NEA >
—Someday, somebody will
write a book about how they
built Walt Disney World, the
immense. opening-in-Octo
ber amusement park south
east of here It will be a
first-class spy story.
The area the Disney agents
bought—some 28,000 acres—
was useless land. It was
pockmarked with sinkholes
and stands of pine and
dotted with lakes and criss
crossed with streams.
Paul McKenney, the presi
dent-elect of the Orlando
Area Chamber of Com
merce, says it was unpro
ductive.
“My daddy used to say
about parts of south Geor
gia," McKenney says, “that
it was ground so poor all it
was good for was to hold
the wool together. That was
what that land where Walt
Disney World is being built
was.”
About six years ago. ru
mors began spreading that
somebody was buying up
huge chunks of it. Nobody
knew who was doing the
buying, or for what purpose.
There were rum o r s that
Ford was going to build a
plant there, that Howard

RETAIL SALES RISE
WASHINGTON! UPI)-Retail
sales during June totaled $33.1
billion, a 1.3 per cent increase
over May and 8.6 per cent
higher than last December,
according to the Commerce
Department.
“Consumers are becoming
decidedly more aggressive buy

reflected in rapidly rising retail
sales,” said Assistant Com
merce Secretary Harold C.
Passer. He called the situation
very encouraging.
NIXON TO JAPAN?

Disney's agents bought un

post office boxes in Kansas
City, put title into the name
ol a Miami bank and other
wise tried to disguise their
motives and presence.
Eventually, the secret
came out. Actually, it was
Walt Disney himself who in
advertently spilled the
beans. An Orlando newspa
perwoman, in Los Angeles
for a press tour, asked him
if he knew anything about
the Florida land-buying. He
didn’t admit he did, but he
didn’t deny it, either, and
she reached the right con
clusion.
When the word got out, the
prices did go up, and Dis
ney’s people did have to pay
more on some parcels and,
on others, they decided not
to buy at all. There are still
some landowners who are
holding out, but the boat has
long since sailed.
Once the land was assem

Record leaf prices are set
VALDOSTA (UPI) — Prices and leaf quality
continued a record-setting pace in the opening of the
second week of the Georgia-Florida flue-cured tobacco
belt markets Monday.
The Federal State Market News Service said Monday
grade averages were $1 and $2 per hundred pounds above
the levels at the close of the first week last Thursday, and
the practical top price moved up to SB4 with some selected

County — curiously. Disney
land in California is in
Orange County, too—but
some was in neighboring
Osceola County. And it cut
across the boundary lines of
several municipalities.
All these governmental en
tities had differing building
codes. And, since the Disney
engineers wanted to use new
building methods, they found
they were often stymied by
the old codes.
One of Disney’s hands, re
tired Gen. Joseph Potter,
came up with the solution.
He discovered that Florida
law permitted the establish
ment of drainage districts,
which could then operate
pretty much as they chose.
They pushed through the
Florida legislature the es
tablishment of their own
drainage district, called
Reedy Creek Improvement
District, which is now a
functioning political entity.
It passed its own building
code, established its own fire
department, supervises its
own sewage and waste dis
posal In fact, it does every
thing a governmental body
does except have police
powers.
The Central Florida area,
particularly around Orlando,
is optimistic about what the

park will do for its economy.
There are a few dissidents—
the Chamber of Commerce s
McKenney says "there are
always some people against
change on general princi
ples’—but most feel it will
lead to a boom
In fact, the chamber’s
main worry is that the park
will attract too many people,
and thus possibly lead to an
increase in the area’s wel
fare roll and vagrancy re
ports.
Already. Orlando’s Salva
tion Army reports an in
crease in its caseload, due to
people who have come into
the area looking tor work at
Walt Disney World.
"We estimate." McKennes
says, "that there will be
13.000 motel rooms needed
by the end of the year and
there will only be 9.000 ready
in the area "
But. basically. Orlando
and the rest of Central Flor
ida are bursting with pride.
They figure they’re about Io
be discovered.

Shrink Pot' With Exercise
By Lawrence Lamb. M.D.
Dear Dr. Lamb —1 am a
young man in my mid-20s. I
would consider myself a little
underweight for my height.
What bothers me is that 1
seem to have gotten that sag
ging stomach problem. I
have noticed most of my
peers also have this.
I don't drink beer, 1 eat
moderately and exercise reg
ularly. Why does this happen
and what can I do to have
a nice firm abdominal region
for the rest of my years?
Dear Reader — You are
right, this is a common oc
currence. That little pot in
the lower abdomen can de
velop even if you are not
obese. It is caused by lack of
muscle strength of the lower
abdominal muscles.
Except in very active peo
ple most exercise does not
work these muscles. Sitting
at a desk helps to lose tone
of the lower abdominal mus
cles. Walking and running on
the level won’t use these
muscles either. The way
many people do sit-ups will
not pul these muscles under
load.
Sit-ups to strengthen the
abdominal muscles should be
done with the knees flexed
and the heels up toward the
buttocks. Otherwise a person
will use the hip muscles
more than the abdominal
muscles to help pull up the
body. The upper abdomen
can be helped by assuming
this position and then sitting
up halfway, relaxing, then
sitting up again.
The lower abdomen is best
put under load by holding
the legs extended and stiff
with the heels held just off
the floor, while lying on the
back. In this same position
pedaling the feet (not
straight up but straight outi
is helpful. Holding the heels
just off the floor and spread
ing the feet apart then closed
and then apart again is a
good exercise.
Finally, in almost any
position you can consciously
