ALCOHOL HELPS SALES
DAYTON, Ohio (UPI) —
When a customer at the BMT
men’s clothing shop here is
asked to “have one on the
house” the proprietors are not
talking about a shirt or tie.
The owner of the shop began
dispensing mixed drinks recent
ly to create a feeling of good
will —and to sell more clothes.
“We find it causes a good
feeling with our customers, and
no pun is intended,” said
Robert Ryan, a partner in the
store.
“People come in to see if
what they have heard is true
and frequently remain to buy a
suit or some accessories, Ryan
said.

A SPECIALIZED TALENT
DARLASTON, England (UPI)
—Tuesday’s edition of the local
afternoon paper had a misprint
in the help wanted columns and
advertised a job as “exper
ienced tickler” instead of
“experienced pickier.”
Nevertheless, the paper said,
more than a dozen persons
applied for the post.
MISTAKEN IDENTITY
CATERHAM, England (UPI)
-When Fred Williams, 22,
spotted a man following his
wife around a local department
store, he thought he was trying
to pick her up.
And when the man persisted,
a court heard Tuesday, Wil
liams tapped him on the
shoulder —and then thumped
him on the nose.
The man turned out to be the
store manager checking for
shop-lifters. Magistrates fined
Williams $36 for assault.

Counties added
to Trail area
ATLANTA (UPI) — The policy board of the Bureau of
State Planning and Community Affairs has eliminated
one of Georgia’s 19 area planning and development
commissions —a move that affects 11 counties.
Eliminated was the old Georgia Southern Planning and
Development Commission. Counties involved are Harris,
Early, Ben Hill, Candler, Bulloch, Evans, Effingham,
Chatham, Newton, Upson and Pike.
Wade Pierce of Mclntosh Trail Area Planning Commission
located in Griffin says the present five county commission
would include the new counties of Pike, Upson, and Newton.
However, no officials notice has gone to these counties
indicating their change of Commissions.
Gov. Jimmy Carter, who attended the unpublicized
board meeting Friday, said he had asked the group to
come up with a plan in which “no county is left in a worse
position than before.”
He said the board had given “serious consideration” to
testimony at a hearing about two weeks ago in reaching
its decision. At that hearing, a plan to shift 15 counties and
eliminate one district was strongly criticized.
