South Viet Senate
wants vote shakeup
SAIGON (UPl)—The South i
Vietnamese Senate today urged i
President Nguyen Van Thieu to
call off the Oct 3 presidential '
election and let the speaker of
the senate “reorganize” the
voting.
The senate, in a special
session, passed a resolution
making the request. It ap
peared unlikely that Thieu, the
only candidate left on the
election after Vice President
Nguyen Cao Ky and, Gen. >
Duong Van “Big” Minh dropped
out would heed the plea.
Thieu has said he would
resign from office if he did not
receive at least 50 per cent of
the vote from the estimated
seven million eligible voters,
but similar requests by Ky for
a postponement and reorganiza
tion of the election were turned
down.
The declaration was read to
the senate by speaker Nguyen
Van Huyen, a political ally of
Thieu after three hours of
debate.
It said the senate was calling
on Thieu and his vice presiden
tial running mate, former
Prime Minister Tran Van
Huong, “to respond to the right
demands of the Vietnamese
people and to respect the law of
the nation.”

Prisoners
kill two
hostages
CLAIRVAUX, France (UPI)
—Police blasted their way
through barricades outside a
prison hospital room today and
recaptured two prisoners who
had killed their two hostages by
cutting their throats.
The hostages, a 25-year-oki
guard, Guy Giradot, and a
nurse, Nicole Comte, 35, were
taken captive by the inmates in
the prison hospital Tuesday
morning.
After a day of bargaining
with prison officials, police set
off a plastic charge, blowing
away the barricades, and
rushed in. The explosion
seriously injured both priso
ners, identified as Roger
Bontemps and Claude Buffet,
police said.
“Unfortunately, and as we
had feared for some hours,”
said Prison Director Jean Le
Como, “The guard was dead,
killed by having his throat cut.
As for the nurse, Mrs. Comte,
she was in a coma, and her
throat was also badly cut.
Despite a doctor’s immediate
efforts, she did not live.”
Le Corno said the inmates
had demanded a car, 250
rounds of ammunition, three
revolvers, a submachinegun
and $2,000 for their escape.
No shots were fired by either
side during the attack, he said,
but the two prisoners were
injured, apparently by the
explosion. They were taken to a
hospital in nearby Troyes, but
their conditions were not made
available.
Police said Bontemps was
serving a 15-year sentence for
assault and Buffet a term of up
to life for murder.

Retired elementary school
teacher Miss Fannie Fassig
celebrated her 100th birthday
here Tuesday by recalling that
“back when parents disciplined
their children it was a rather
pleasant experience to teach.”
“Back then” was from 1890
through 1931, when she retired
after 41 years in the classroom.
But Miss Fassig doesn’t think
she would like to teach now.
“It was easier in the past
than now because parents don’t
discipline their children like
they used to,” she said. “If my
students had rioted, I haven’t
the slightest idea what I would
have done. It’s all beyond me.”
