Jones, Piercy, Williams
in battle for TB position
Who will start at tailback for
the Griffin Bears here Friday
night?
That’s such a good question
that Coach Max Dowis doesn’t
even have the answer yet.
“A real battle is raging for the
tailback position,” Coach Dowis
said. “It involves Curtis Jones,
Zachrey Piercy and Tony
Williams, who is up from the
“B” team.
“I don’t know who will start
Friday night against Price. It
really doesn’t matter. All three
will play," he said.
Jones, Piercy, and Williams
are similar runners. Although
they are small (Piercy and

There will be at least one
change in Griffin’s lineup Fri

Coach Dowis said today that
Charles Gaddy would open at

Randy Crosby, who has a slight
ankle injury.
Crosby had been going both

Crosby’s play would be limited
to offensive tackle because of
the injury.
Gregg Crawford and Craig

Aaron closing
in on Mays
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI)-Hank Aa
ron continues to dose in on
Willie Mays in the home run
derby.
The 37-year-old Aaron hit No.
638 Tuesday night and now
trails the 40-year-old Mays by
only eight. And it now appears
that Babe Ruth’s all-time high
of 714 is within range in the two
more seasons Aaron says he
will play before retirement.
Tuesday night’s homer was
No. 46 of the year for Aaron, a
personal single-season high and
one ahead of Pittsburgh’s Willie
Stargell in their duel for 1971
honors. It was one of three hit
by the Atlanta Braves in their
5-2 victory over San Diego.
Aaron, now batting .330 with ]
117 runs batted in his best of
six seasons in Atlanta, passed ,
another milestone Tuesday in
his steady drive to capture a
flock of career records.
Aaron, who also had a run
scoring single and a walk, was
credited with three at bats and
that raised his major league
total to 10,431 times at bat —
moving him past Honus Walker
into third place behind Stan
Musial (10,972) and Ty Cobb
(11,437).
Hank, who hit his previous
one-season high of 45 homers
back in 1962, noted that he
hasn’t kept a close tab on his
many achievements.
“I only know that I’m pretty
high up on a lot of the lists and
that I’ll get higher as long as I
keep playing.”
That brought up the question
of Aaron’s troublesome right
knee.
“It feels fine right now,”
answered Hank. “We didn’t
even have to drain it the other
day. The doctor said there
wasn’t enough fluid to worry
about and he just gave me a
shot. I think it will be fine after
the off-season rest.”
A couple of Aaron notes that
may have slipped attention
earlier this season. When he hit
his 20th homer he moved ahead
of Babe Ruth in most
consecutive years hitting 20 or
more with 17 and when he hit
No. 30 he tied Ruth for most
years 30 or more (13).

San Diego gave Jay Franklin,
an 18-year-old fast-balling right
hander from Vienna, Va., his
first major league start Tues
day night but the youngster,
who was pitching in high school
less than four months ago,
lasted only 2 1-3 innings.
Aaron hit a two-out homer off
Franklin in the first inning;
Darrell Evans hit a two-run
homer with none out in the
second; and Ralph Garr led off
the third with yet another
homer.
“Jay was nervous, but then,
so was I,” said Franklin’s
battery mate, 19-year-old Mike
Ivie who was playing major
league ball back in his home
town for the first time.
“It’s obvious that Franklin is
patterning himself after Clay
Kirby (his next door neighbor
back in Vienna),” said Braves
Manager Luman Harris. “When
he gains control, he’s going to
be a good one. I’d sure take
him.”
Mike Caldwell, a 22-year-old
lefthander also just up from the
San Diego farm, was impres
sive Tuesday night as he
allowed just one hit in 3 2-3
innings.
“Franklin, Ivie (hitting 8-for
-17 in six games) and Caldwell
are just three of the many fine
young players we have in the
fold,” said Padres Manager
Preston Gomez. “Our future
lodes bright.”
Tom Kelley (9-5) went the
route for Atlanta Tuesday
night, giving up only one earned
run and six hits.
