Rams favored
by only 2%
By MARTIN LADER
UPI Sports Writer
Now that most everyone who
cares has heard about it, no
one is ready yet to believe it.
It is still only a few days
since two rambunctious young
rookies named Jim Plumkett
and Archie Manning pulled the
legs out from under the
establishment, but the smart
money says that the second
time around they’ll be the ones
who lose their balance.
Making their National Foot
ball League debuts last week
for the two weakest teams of
1970, Plunkett and Manning
each engineered a remarkable
upset as the New England
Patriots stunned Oakland and
the New Orleans Saints sur
prised Los Angeles.
Nevertheless, the oddsmakers
have made the Patriots and
Saints heavy underdogs in this
Sunday’s action although both
are playing at home against
teams that lost their opening
games.
Plunkett, the Heisman Tro
phy winner from Stanford who
threw for two touchdowns last
week, carries the Patriot attack
against Detroit and Manning,
who lugged the ball over from
the one-yard line on the final
play of the game to provide the
winning points in his profession-
O’Neill will start
for Tech Jackets
ATLANTA (UPI) — Georgia
Tech and Army, both still hunt
ing for some offensive punch,
meet for the second time Sat
urday with the Yellow Jackets
an overwhelming choice to
crush the Cadets.
In an effort to get Tech roll
ing, Coach Bud Carson has de
cided to change starting quar
terbacks. Jack O’Neill, a junior
from Savannah, will get the call
against Army, a replacement
for Eddie McAshan, who start
ed the first two games of the
season.
But Carson quickly points out
both O’Neill and McAshan will
see plenty of action and the one
who does the better job will
play more.
The Yellow Jackets, ranked
19th nationally, shut out Michi
gan State 10-0 last Saturday, but
failed to complete a pass. Tech
dropped its opener to South Car
olina.
Army, meanwhile, lost its on
ly game played so far, a 38-3
routby Stanford last Saturday—
and in that one, Army defend
ers gave up 269 yards through
the air. Obviously, that’s an ap
parent weakness Carson would
like to probe.
He said the Tech passing
game always seemed to devel
op slowly but the sputtering at
tack was not all the fault of the
quarterbacks. “Our receivers

against San Francisco. The
Lions are favored by 10%
points and the Forty Niners by
13.
Along with the fortunes of
Manning and Plunkett, Sunday
can be a pivotal day for their
two victims of last week.
Oakland, the consensus choice
to repeat as Western Division
champion in the American
Conference, travels to San
Diego desperate not to fall two
games back in the race, and
Los Angeles is in the same
position in the Western Division
of the National Conference
when it hosts the Atlanta
Falcons.
The Raiders are slim 2%
point choices over the Char
gers, who rallied from two
touchdowns back to upset
Kansas City last week and the
Rams are identical 2% points
favorites over the Falcons, who
are fresh from an upset victory
over San Francisco.
The Super Bowl champion
Baltimore Colts, impressive in
a 22-0 shutout of the New York
Jets last week, are favored by
five points at home against
Cleveland, and in other Sunday
games the Minnesota Vikings
are picked by 13 points at home
against Chicago, the Washing
ton Redskins are three over the
haven’t run good routes and
they haven’t caught the ball,”
Carson said.
Nifty running back Brent
Cunningham, who scored the on
ly Yellow Jacket touchdown
against Michigan State on a 28-
yard sprint, will key the Geor
gia Tech ground game along
with Greg Horne and Rob Hea

a tough defensive unit which
picked off four interceptions last
week.

Tag Team
match
on card
A return tag team match with
an extended time limit of 90
minutes will headline the
wrestling card Saturday night
at the Sports Palace.
The Assassins will put their
title on the line against Bob
Armstrong and Bill Dromo.
In the special match, King
Louie Tillet of France will
oppose Dick Steinborn.
Another tag team match
sends the Monroe Brothers
against Kublah Kahn and
Robert Soto. Joe Turco will face
Jerry Oates and the opening
event pits Jimmy Dancing Bear
against Mr. X.
Giants at New York, the
Cincinnati Bengals are picked
by four points at Pittsburgh,
the Dallas Cowboys are 13 over
the Eagles at Philadelphia,
Miami is favored by five points
at Buffalo, Green Bay is picked
by 2% points at home over
Denver and Kansas City is
rated 6% points better than the
Oilers at Houston.
In Monday night’s nationally
televised game, the St. Louis
Cardinals are favored by 6%
points on their home field over
the Jets.
The game between New
England and Detroit will be the
first ever between the two
clubs in regular season compe
tition and the Lions will be
growling to redeem themselves
after blowing a 13-point lead to
Minnesota in last Monday
night’s television game.
San Francisco also hopes to
rebound from a stunner while
the Saints can virtually make
their season a success with a
second straight upset over a
West Coast power. Manning
completed 16 of 29 passes for
218 yards against Los Angeles,
along with carrying the ball
three times for 14 yards.
Forty Niner coach Dick Nolan
said of Manning, “He likes to
roll out and he has good speed
and size. You just have to react
when you see him coming.”
for Army with sophomore King
sley Fink. Ray Ritacco, Bruce
Simpson and Bob Hines will do
the bulk of the running.
The Cadets did well against
the Stanford running game but
found their own offense lacking
at crucial moments. They pene
trated the Indians’ 30 three
times early but managed to col
lect only a field goal.
About 40,000 are expected for
the contest. In their only previ
ous meeting, Georgia Tech wal
loped the Cadets 45-6.
Gabriel’s ribs
still are sore
LOS ANGELES (UPI)-A big
“if” today for the Los Angeles
Rams was the arm of Roman
Gabriel, the quarterback who
has not hit his stride this fall.
Actually, Gabriel has no trou
ble with his arm, but his ribs
are sore on the left side and
when he tries to throw the long
ball it hurts and his accuracy
suffers.
If Gabirel doesn’t round into
top shape by Sunday, the Atlan
ta Falcons may pull another up
set. They turned back the NFC
Western Division champions,

DELAWARE, Ohio—Happy driver, Herve Filion, holds Little Brown Jug and pacer he drove to win
the trophy yesterday capturing the 26th Annual Little Brown Jug and ruining heavily-favored
Albatross’ bid for pacing’s Triple Crown. (UPI)
Albatross beaten
in ‘Brown Jug 9
By GENE CADDES
DELAWARE, Ohio (UPI) —
“He just outpaced me,” said
Stanley Dancer after his
favored Albatross was beaten in
two straight heats Thursday for
the 26th annual Little Brown
Jug by Herve Filion’s Nan
semond, shattering his bid for 3-
year-old pacing’s Triple Crown.
The Jug, raced before 43,600
persons at the Delaware County
Fairgrounds, was supposed to
belong to “The Big Bird” this
year, with the other 14 entries
.in the twodivision, three-year
old pace fighting it out for the
rest of the $102,964 purse.
But Filion and Nansemond
kept the Meadow Skipper super
colt from winning it in two
heats with a stirring stretch
drive to beat Albatross by a
head, and then led from wire to
wire in the three-horse race-off
which also included H.T. Lucas,
winner of the first heat.
Nansemond, who was idle
from July 16 to Sept. 11
because of a checked ligament
in one of his legs, picked up
San Francisco Forty Niners,
last Sunday, 20-17, while the
Rams were losing 24-20, to New
Orleans.
Against the Saints, Gabriel
was way off target. He complet
ed only 11 of 30 for 164 yards.
“Gabe was pressing a little,”
said Coach Tommy Prothro,”
but I’m confident he’ll work
things out.”
He has a few days to work it
out but as of Thursday after
noon, he said, “I feel quite a
bit better but it still hurts a lit
tle when I throw a long pass.”
Norm Van Brocklin, the for
mer Ram great, has turned out
a first class quarterback from
his old alma mater, Oregon, in
Bobby Berry. Berry is under 6
feet and isn’t supposed to have
all the equipment for a Nation
al Football League quarterback.
Berry completed 16 of 21—76.2
per cent—against the Forty
Niners, good for 185 yards and
two touchdowns.
Except for Gabriel, who in
jured his ribs three weeks ago
against San Diego, the Rams
are reported in top physical
shape.
Gabriel will operate in a
backfield with Les Josephson,
Willie Ellison and Lance Rent
zel and up front will have Jack
Snow and Bob Elgin as receiv
ers.
Pistons
YPSILANTI, Mich. (UPI) —
The Detroit Pistons reduced
their roster to 14 players
Thursday by dropping three
rookies as they closed their
training camp at Eastern
Michigan University. Cut from
the National Basketball Associ
ation Club’s roster were Dennis
Stewart, a guard from the
University of Michigan; guard
Jerry Coury of Wayne State
and forward Jim Fleming of
Alcorn, A&M.
$31,892.01 and turned in a
sizzling 1:572-5 in his first
winning heat.
The Tar Heel colt just missed
nipping Albatross in the second
division heat, losing by a nose
in a photo finish.
That might have been a tip
off as to what was ahead
because it was the first time
Albatross, which had won 17
out of 18 and 16 in a row going
into the Jug, had ever been
involved in a photo.
Included in Albatross’ string
of 1971 wins were the Cane
Futurity and the Messenger
Stakes and he was trying to
wrap up the Triple Crown with a
Jug victory.
‘ H.T. Luca won the first •
division, holding on as El
Patron made a gallant stretch
bid only to lose by a neck.
