Giants all but
end LA’s hopes
By JOE CARNICELLI
By UPI Sports Writer
The Houston Astrodomr, a
sort of hell for the San
Francisco Giants the past
couple of years, became a bit
heavenly Thursday night.
The Giants, who had won only
six of their last 27 games in the
Dome, made it two in a row
Thursday night and all but
ended the Los Angeles Dodgers’
title hopes in the National
League West. Gaylord Perry
pitched a three-hitter and Willie
McCovey drove in both runs as
the Giants edged the Astros 2-1.
The victory had multiple
advantages for the Giants:
—ltboosted their division lead
to three games over the idle
Dodgers with six to play.
—lt lowered their magic
number for clinching the
division title to four.
—lt marked the first time
since Sept. 3-4 that the Giants
were able to post back-to-back
victories.
—lt snapped a six-year
drought for Perry in the

Georgia fans may
see Johnson pass
By JERRY MITCHELL
CLEMSON, S. C. (UPI)-Sat
urday afternoon could be the
first time University of Georgia
football fans have seen exten
sive use of quarterback Andy
Johnson’s passing arm.
The Bulldogs, boasting a 2-0
record and 13th ranking nation
ally, are heavily favored to de
feat the Clemson Tigers. The
Tigers are 0-1 with a 13-10 loss
to Kentucky in the season’s
opener.
Johnson, a sophomore who is
well on the way to becoming
Georgia’s best ground - gaining
quarterback, rushed for a total
of 239 yards in the first two
games. The Bulldogs’ record for
most yards gained by a quarter
back in a season is 507 yards
set by Kitby Moore.

victory since Aug. 31.
“We’re in a real good position
now,” said Giants’ Manager
Charlie Fox. “I’m happy to get
two of three in the Dome and
two of three the rest of the way
will clinch it for us.”
Fox’s kindest words were
saved for McCovey, who hit his
18th homer with the bases
empty in the fourth and forced
in another run when he was hit
by a pitch with the bases
loaded in the fifth. McCovey
also slid into first base to
record a close out for the
second straight night, disre
garding his injured knee. He
put out Cesar Cedeno for the
last out of the game.
Perry called the victory, “a
big boost for us, especially
coming here. It’s been years
since I won here.”

leagues, Pittsburgh blanked St.

Clemson Coach Hootie Ingram
feels the Tigers’ weekend off
after the opening loss to Ken
tucky benefited his team in that
only one player, offensive
guard Art Brisacher, is expect
ed to miss the contest because
of injuries.
“Our offensive ground game
should improve with each
game,” says Ingram. “But they
will definitely be put to an awe
some task of trying to move the
ball against that fine Georgia
defense.”
Although Johnson leads the
Georgia offense in rushing, Bull
dog Coach Vince Dooley says
he wants his quarterback to

ture.
“John can pass and he will,”
says Dooley.

Jack O’Neill would replace Ed
die McAshan, also a junior, in
the starting lineup. O’Neill has
been running behind McAshan,
out California 5-0 and Oakland
nipped Milwaukee 5-4.
Willie Stargell had a two-run
homer —his 46th —and Nelson
Briles pitched a six-hitter as
the Pirates beat St. Louis and
Greg Luzinski’s two-run single
capped a four-run ninth that
carried the Phillies past Mon
treal.
Bob Aspromonte’s two-out,
two-run single in the eighth
boosted the Mets over the Cubs
and gave Nolan Ryan his first
victory in seven weeks.
Rookie Lee Richard had a
three-run homer and Carlos
May added one with the bases
empty as the White Sox
dumped California and provided
Wilbur Wood with his 21st
victory. Wood allowed only five
hits as he pitched his sixth
straight complete game and
21st of the season.
Angel Mangual walked with
the bases loaded and two out in
the ninth to force home the
winning run and give Oakland
its victory over Milwaukee. The
smallest crowd ever to see a
major league game in Oakland
—1,535 fans —watched the
game.
The Bulldogs have defeated
Oregon State 56-25 and Tulane
17-7, and Dooley says the wea
ther was a factor in the limited
passing game against Tulane.
Another offensive weapon for
Georgia is the running of sopho
more Ricky Lake, who has car
ried the ball 35 times for 114
yards and is expected to relieve
Johnson of some of the rushing
chores.
Ingram is expected to go with
the same starting backfield line
up he used against Kentucky
with veteran senior quarterback
Tommy Kendrick, tailback Rick
Gilstrap, full back Wade Hughes
and flanker Don Kelley. Gil
strap is the Tigers’ leading
rusher with 72 yards in the los
ing effort against Kentucky.
who has failed to display the
form he flashed as a sophomore
starter last year.
Carson said McAshan would
enter the Army game “before
the half is over.” After that, he
said, “Whichever man is doing
the best job will play the
most.”
Quarterbacking also came in
for scrutiny at Tennessee, but
in reverse fashion. The Vols are
trying to figure out a defense
for Auburn’s Pat Sullivan,
who has the ability, according
to Vols coach Bill Battle, “to
scramble and turn a bad play
into a good one.” The scrap
Saturday in Knoxville could de
termine the eventual Southeast
ern Conference champ.
At LSU, tailback Jim Kadi
dislocated his shoulder Thurs
day while diving for a pass and
probably will be out of action
for two weeks. He won’t make
the trip to Wisconsin for Satur
day’s fight with the Badgers.
Mississippi sharpened its de
fenses against Kentucky’s Wis
bone-T offense, which seemed
to concern coach Billy Kinard.
“We just hope we’ll be able to
follow the ball,” he said.
The Wishbone also was wor
ring coach Fran Curci whose
Miami team faces Wake Forest
Saturday. The Deacons’ offense,
he said, is “radically different”
from that of Florida State, the
Hurricanes’ opening opponent
last week, and “a whole new de
fense had to be put together
this week.”
Coach Vince Dooley said his
Georgia squad was ready for
Saturday’s trip to “Death Val
ley” where the Bulldogs will
meet winless Clemson. Dooley
closed out practice Thursday
with a punt coverage drill de
signed to halt the Tigers’ punt
return ace, Don Kelley.
Alabama worked out in a
heavy rain and starters Johnny
Musso and Joe Labue missed
the drill. Coach Bear Bryant
gave no explanation for their
absence, but said both would be
in action against Florida Satur
day at Gainesville.

Hawks ‘Trapp’76ers
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.
(UPl)—Three key foul shots in
the final moments by top draft
pick George Trapp gave the At
lanta Hawks a 117-113 win over
the Philadelphia 76ers Thursday
night in an NBA exhibition
game.
The two teams meet again to
night in Jacksonville.
Coach Richie Guerin said he
was pleased with the perform
ance of Trapp, former star at
Long Beach, Calif. He pitted
Trapp against the whiz from
Brooklyn, Billie Cunningham,
and they fought to a standoff.
Trapp could only score 11
points and grab 8 rebounds, but
all-pro Cunningham scored just
12 points and took 9 off of the
boards.
The Hawks scoring was led
by Lou Hudson with 27 and
Walt Bellamy with 21.
The 2,229 fa ns were disappoint
ed, however, by the absence of
“Pistol” Pete Maravich, who is
suffering from a tonsil virus
and resting in Jacksonville. It
was doubtful that he would be
able to rejoin the Hawks squad
for tonight’s game.
