Firm said illegal
ATLANTA (UPI) —Compltroller General Johnnie
Caldwell says he has learned of another Texas mail-order
insurance firm attempting to operate illegally in Georgia.
It is the third such case to be reported in the past two
weeks.
Caldwell, also the state’s insurance commissioner,
identified the firm as First Continental Life and Accident
Insurance Co. of Houston, also known as Union Labor
Research Consultants.
Caldwell said the firm has no union connections and is
not licensed to do business in Georgia.
Calls it childish
ATLANTA (UPI) — The increasing sentiment in
Congress to limit U.S. aid to the United Nations after
Monday’s vote on China is “a little childish,” says Sen.
Henry Jackson, D-Wash.
Jackson, during a brief stop at Atlanta’s Hartsfield
International Airport Wednesday night, called the U. N.
action “unfortunate” and said he had favored
membership for Communist China and retaining the
Nationalist Chinese.
“We say we want to recognize Red China because you
can’t ignore 750 million people, but it seems just as
inconceivable to me to ignore 14 million people,” Jackson
said of the vote expelling the Nationalists.
Considered a potential presidential candidate, Jackson
told newsmen he thought the South had been treated
“unfairly” and that “the North has moved slower than the
South on the racial question.”
He said he saw no reason why the Democrats shouldn’t
nominate a Southerner for vice president.
Mounted patrol works
ATLANTA (UPl)—After two weeks of mounted police
patrols in Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, Mayor Sam Massell
declared that control of the park near the city’s hippie
district “has been regained.”
The mayor said if the patrol continues to work as well as
it has in Piedmont, mounted police may be sent to other
Atlanta parks.
“Piedmont Park is back in use now,” Massell said in an
interview with radio station WYZE Wednesday. “And if
control of the park was lost before, it has been regained.”
Three policemen on horseback began patrolling the
area after several nights of violence and repeated
complaints that hippies and drug addicts had taken over.
Massell discounted criticism that having the horses in
the park posed a pollution problem saying, “We had a
bigger problem with sanitation with some of the people
who were in there before.”

Barnesville defender
ATLANTA (UPI)—A police captain and a man calling
himself “Chains” were among motorcycle enthusiasts
who told a legislative committee considering proposed
safety restrictions Wednesday to leave their machines
alone.
The two witnesses were joined by a bike-riding
grandfather, members of “straight” motorcycle clubs
and others at a lengthy hearing at the Capitol before a
House subcommittee headed up by State Rep. Bobby
Johnson of Warrenton.
Barnesville Police Capt. Owen Adams identified
himself as “a chopper man” and told the committee there
were enough laws on the books already regulating
motorcycles.
“Chains,” who refused to give his name and bore a tatoo
on his arm reading “Outlaws,” told the lawmakers, “I
can’t see where anybody has the right to judge the way
anybody builds a motorcycle.
Johnson, a former motorcycle owner himself, said his
committee was primarily concerned with safety
explaining, “there are too many people being killed.”
The committee had before them recommendations from
the Public Safety Department which included requiring
special licenses to drive motorcycles and restrictions on
what kind of alterations can be made on the machines.
State Patrol Capt. D. S. Harris cited figures showing a
24.1 per cent increase in motorcycle registration over last
year and said motorcycle deaths went up 33.5 per cent.
Chick Henslee of East Point, who said he was a 47-year
old grandfather who depended on his motorcycle for a
living, declared it should be up to the individual to wear
safety equipment.
Robert Homer of Decatur, wearing a jacket with
“Custom Riders of Atlanta” on it, said custom made
motorcycles may appear unsafe “but unless you’re
qualified to say this, you should keep your slurs to your
selves.”
Halloween Saturday
ATLANTA (UPI)— Georgians have been asked by Gov.
Jimmy Carter to celebrate Halloween on Saturday
instead of the official date of Sunday.
Carter urged parents not to send their children “trick or
treating” alone or to homes of people they don’t know.
“It is sad that we must warn our children against
poisoned candy and apples filled with razor blades,” the
governor said, “but we have reached a point that makes
such a warning absolutely necessary.”

Dixie band out
ATHENS, Ga. (UPl)—When the University of Georgia
marching band parades onto the field at halftime, it will
no longer be known as the Dixie Redcoat Band.
Director Roger Dancz denied there was any pressure
from black groups to make the name change. “We have
been in the process of changing the name for the past
couple of years,” he said.
The word “Dixie” is being dropped and the new name
will be “The University of Georgia Redcoat Marching
Band.”
Dancz said “Dixie” was inserted in 1955 when the band
needed “a catchy name” but it was never official. The
name change was the decision of the band’s officers.
Camp contracts set
BUFORD, Ga. (UPl)—Contracts for more than $lO
million were awarded four companies Wednesday by the
Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority to construct
recreation and vacation facilities.
The plans call for 800 campsites, 150 vacational rental
cottages, a 200-room motel and golf course and facilities
for boat rentals and other water activities.
The facilities will be constructed over five islands and
the lakefront, and some of them are expected to be ready
next year when an estimated 3 million persons will visit
the area.
Bill Cunningham, executive director of the authority,
said work was expected to begin within 30 days on all the
projects.
Indian Acres International of Falls Church, Va., was
awarded the contract to develop the campsites while
Maxwell Associates of Miami, Fla., will handle the
marine and acquatic activities.
Thomas R. May and Associates of Atlanta received the
golf inn contract and another Atlanta firm, Tulloh
Enterprises, will build the cottages.

AUGUSTA, Ga.—Lt Gov. Lester Maddox, has apparently
motorized his famous backward riding bicycle trick. But it’s
really a children’s ride at the Exchange Club’s fair in
Augusta where Maddox has a booth selling pick handles,
Maddox records, and “Phooey” shorts to supplement his
take-home pay. (UPI)
