the Orioles with a five-year
contract, an estimated $60,000 a
year in salary and stock
options.
But the new executive, who
replaces die discharged Dick
Walsh, said money alone was
not the chief inducement.
“This is an opportunity for
me to get back into the work of
building an organization,” the
43-year-old Dalton said. “It’s a
chance to see if the success we
had in Baltimore can be
repeated with the Angels."
Dalton as director of player
personnel for the Orioles
developed a club that won four
American League pennants and
two world championships in six
years for him.
“I’m leaving a team that is
respected in its community and
has been a winner but I look at
the new job on its merits and
its future,” he said.
Dalton pointed out he proba
bly could have gotten the
Orioles to match the money
offer of the Angels but the
incentives here range beyond
salary.
One of the first jobs
confronting the new general
manager was selection of a
field manager to replace Harold
“Lefty” Phillips who was fired
after two and a half years at
the helm as the successor to
Bill Rigney.
In announcing Dalton’s ap
pointment, Reynolds hailed him
as a man who was used to
winning.
“Gene and I are extremely
pleased to have obtained a man
of his caliber,” Reynolds said.
The Angels finished fourth
this past season in the
American League West after
having been hailed as a possible
division champion at the start
of the season.
