By Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
Dear Dr. Lamb — Would
taking sleeping pills and
tranquilizers cause a man in
his 50s to be impotent?
Dear Reader—lt might de
pend on how tranquil the
pills made him. There are
a number of medicines that
will have this effect, includ
ing some medicine used in
treating high blood pressure.
There are many other causes
though. A man with this
problem taking medicine
should obviously talk it over
with his doctor.
Dear Dr. Lamb—l have a
problem which is very em
barrassing to me as I work
in an office all day. I have
gas which I do pass all day
long and it’s very embar
rassing and I don’t know just
what to do. I do not sit down
much so it’s not from that. I
do eat a lot of fruit and drink
a lot of coffee. I have taken
medicine but that did not
help. Could you please tell
me what I can do or take to
help me?
Dear Reader—l think you
know what one of the prob
lems may be. Stop that cof
fee drinking and see if that
won’t solve the problem.
Many people have excess
gas from using excess cof
fee. Often what people need
to do is correct their living
habits, not take more medi
cine. Don’t switch to tea
either or use colas. If you
just love the taste of coffee,
use one of the decaffeinated
products. Also, fruit is excel
lent for the diet but excess
NASA seeking
youth support
By FRANK MACOMBER
Military-Aerospace Writer
Copley News Service
The federal space agency,
faced with a famine in manned
space missions after 1973
unless Congress underwrites
the multibillion-dollar space
shuttle program, is shifting its
sights to the millions of high
school students who will be
eligible to vote at age 18.
American youth’s new voting
rights give young people a
considerable influence on
House and Senate members
who will determine whether a
manned shuttlecraft will fly
between earth and space to an
earth-orbiting U. S. space
station in the late 19705.
Hence the National
Aeronautics and Space Ad
ministration’s selection of the
National Science Teachers
Association of Washington, D.
C., for negotiation of a contract
to manage and operate what
the space agency calls the
Skylab Student Project.
NASA officials explain it is
designed to “stimulate interest
in science and technology by
directly involving students in
space research.”
After the Apollo 17 moon
mission has ended late next
year, NASA’s emphasis will
shift to earth orbit and the
launch of a Skylab ex
perimental space station in
April, 1973. Nine astronauts
flying three different missions
will occupy the station for a
total of five months over an
eight-month period.

DR. LAWRENCE E. LAMB
Some Pills Can
Cause Impotence
amounts in some people
cause gas. Some people do
not tolerate milk and using
milk may cause them to
form excess gas. Try these
simple measures and if you
still have trouble see your
doctor for an examination.
Dear Dr. Lamb—l had a
kidney removed because of
an accident. My doctor tells
me that I can live a normal
life and do not have to
change my eating habits or
restrict my diet in any way.
Do you agree to this?
Dear Reader — Yes. One
good kidney is sufficient to
do the job. Some people are
born with only one kidney
and suffer no ill effects from
it. Nature actually did pro
vide us with a redundant
system. You can get along
with one good lung, one
ovary, one testicle and only
part of the liver. Even part
of the brain is never used
nearly to its capacity and
some wags claim most of us
don’t use any of our brain
most of the time.
The only catch is that the
remaining kidney must be a
good kidney. A urinary tract
infection can be more ser
ious or if you were to get
a kidney stone that blocked
the drainage of the kidney
you wouldn’t have a spare
kidney to take over the work.
(NEWSPAPER ENTERPRISE ASSN.)
Please send your questions and
comments to Lawrence E. Lamb,
M.D., in care of this paper. While
Dr. Lamb cannot answer individual
letters, he will answer letters of
general interest in future columns.
NASA’s idea is to attract
thousands of high school
science students across the
nation to America’s space
program by letting them
participate in it.
