here this weekend by the
Griffin-Spalding Historical
Association.
The First Baptist Chapel (Old
Hunt building) will be included
on the Candlelight tour Satur
day night from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
but will not be open during the
Saturday afternoon and Sunday
afternoon tours of the church
property.
Visitors may see the historic
church’s interiors Saturday
afternoon and Sunday afternoon
from 2 till 5.

Second Baptist
to host
missionaries
The Week of Prayer for
Foreign Missions observance at
Second Baptist Church will
conclude with guest Southern
Baptist Missionaries speaking
on Friday night and Sunday
morning. The week is observed
in Southern Baptist churches
each year to emphasize foreign
missions and to encourage
giving to the “Lottie Moon
Christmas Offering” all of
which goes directly to the
foreign mission field.
On Friday evening at 7:30
Miss Bonnie Moore, missionary
to Africa, will speak and show
filmstrips of the mission work in
Nigeria. Mrs. Clifford Hutson,
W.M.U. director, invites all
interested persons from area
churches to attend.
On Sunday morning at the
worship hour Mr. and Mrs.
Gene Tunnell, newly appointed
missionaries to South Vietnam,
will be the guests. Mr. Tunnell
worked in the inner-city mission
program of Broadway Baptist
Church, Fort Worth, Tex. while
a student at Southwestern
Baptist Seminary. This work
was under the auspics of the
Home Mission Board. Following
graduation he taught in the
seminary until appointment by
the Foreign Mission Board. Mr.
Tunnell will bring the morning
message and Mrs. Tunnell, a
talented musician, will also
participate in the service.

The antique show and sale
included in the tour will be at St.
George’s Episcopal Church.
Parish Hall Friday and Satur
day from 10 a.m. till 8 p.m.
Six homes included in the tour
will be open on Saturday and
Sunday afternoons from 2 till 5.

Mr. Smith
Mr. George Washington
Smith of Route two, Walker’s
Mill road, Orchard Hill, died at
the Living Care Center Wed
nesday afternoon.
Mr. Smith was born in
Lumpkin County and had lived
in Griffin for most of his life. He
was a member of the
Fellowship Baptist Church and
retired employe of Highland
Mills.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Evelyn Reid Smith; two
daughters, Mrs. R. J. Reynolds
of Atlanta and Mrs. Harold
Vidos of Berwick, La.; a son,
Curtis L. Smith of Griffin; five
sisters, Mrs. Ruby Stringer of
Rome, Mrs. Gretelee Everhart
of Atlanta, Mrs. Clifford Hester,
Mrs. Hazel Dockey and Mrs.
Charlie Atha, allot Logansville;
five brothers, Lalonza Smith of
Atlanta, Edgar Smith of
Walhalla, S.C., O. H. Smith of
Gainesville, Elizah Smith of
Louisville, Ky., and Henry
Smith of Lakeland, Fla.; 10
grandchildren, four great
grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday afternoon at 3
o’clock from the Orchard Hill
Baptist Church. The Rev.
Wayman Merritt and the Rev.
G. A. Morgan will officiate and
burial will be in the church
cemetery. The body was
carried to the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Curtis L. Smith, Walker’s
Mill road, Orchard Hill to await
the funeral hour. McDonald
Chapel is in charge of plans.
Mr. Sledge
Mr. Guy Roy Sledge of 1216
Drewry Lane died at the
Griffin-Spalding County
Hospital early this morning.
Mr. Sledge was bom in Fulton
County and had made his home
in Griffin for most of his life. He
was a retired employe of
Dundee Mills.
He is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. Ruby Hamby of
Gainesville; two sons, Calvin
Sledge, and Roland Sledge, both
of Griffin; a sister, Mrs. Bell
Cantrell of Griffin; five grand
children, one great-grandchild
and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Saturday morning at
11 o’clock from DeVotie Baptist
Church. The Rev. A. C.
Stephens will officiate and
burial will be in Oak Hill
cemetery. The body will remain
at McDonald Chapel until
carried to the church 30 minutes
prior to the funeral hour.
Friends may visit the family at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin
Sledge, 214 Carver road.
Mrs. Kent
Funeral services for Mrs.
Sallie Staples Kent, 62, wife of
Ernest Kent of Route two,
Jackson, were conducted this
afternoon at 2 o’clock from the
Stewart Baptist Church in
Newton County. The Rev. Oscar
White officiated and burial was
in the church cemetery.
Among her survivors is a
brother, Thomas Staples of
Griffin.
Haisten Funeral Home of
Jackson was in charge of plans.
Mrs. Battle
Mrs. Mary Battle, 55, of Route
one, Williamson, died unex
pectedly this morning at her
residence.
Mrs. Battle was a member of
the Corinth Baptist Church in
Rover.
She is survived by her
husband, Ernest Battle.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.

Mrs. Corley
Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Chasteen
Corley, 40, of 111 Library street,
Barnesville, widow of Mr.
Robert Jarrett Corley, died at
her residence Wednesday af
ternoon after suffering an
apparent heart seizure.
Mrs. Corley was bom in
Bartow County and had lived in
Barnesville for 23 years. She
was a former employe of
American Mills in Jackson and
a member of the Assembly of
God Church.
She is survived by three
daughters, Mrs. Karen Mon
tgomery, Miss Dickie Corley
and Miss Tiny Ann Corley;
three sons, Ricky Corley,
Morgan Corley and Robert
David Corley, all of Bar
nesville; father, Jesse H.
Chasteen of Calhoun; a sister,
Mrs. Ovaleen Whitten of
Marietta; brother, Jesse Lee
Chasteen of Cartersville.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday afternoon at 2
o’clock from the Assembly of
God Church in Barnesville. The
Rev. William Rogers will of
ficiate and burial will be at
Pleasant Hill Methodist Church
cemetery. The body will remain
at Haisten Funeral Home in
Barnesville.
Mrs. Couch
Mrs. Georgia Lee Couch of
Route one, Talbotton, died
unexpectedly this morning at
her residence.
She was a lifelong resident of
Talbott County and a member
of the Powell Baptist Church in
Talbotton.
She is survived by her
husband, Zannie B “Hasty”
Couch; seven daughters, six
sons and three brothers.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced by Union Society
Funeral Home of Concord.
Mr. Holland
Mr. Marvin Holland, 60, of 316
East Tinsley street, died this
morning at his residence.
He was the brother of Mrs.
Kathleen Lindsey of Griffin.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hill
Mrs. A. G. Hill Sr., of
Greenville, S.C. died last night
after a lengthy illness. She was
the mother of Mrs. Barney
Hawkins of Griffin.
Funeral services will be held
tomorrow at 11 a.m. from the
Mackey funeral home at
Greenville and burial will be in
a Greenville cemetery.
Other survivors include two
other daughters, Mrs. Fred
Palmer and Mrs. Charles
Hughes, both of Greenville; a
son, A. G. Hill Jr., of Green
ville; six grandchildren and
eight great grandchildren.
4-H’ers have
combined
meeting
A combined meeting for 4-H
boys and girls were held
yesterday at Fourth Ward
School. The meeting was
conducted by William Wages
and Mrs. Beth Epling.
A demonstration on home
furnishings was given by Peggy
Clines.
Mrs. Epling gave instructions
on making Christmas
decorations and Christmas
items, such as a candle holder,
Christmas tree, Christmas
flower pot and a Santa Claus,

Youth charged
with burglary
Robert Emmett Bloodworth
Jr., 17, of 553 South Ninth street,
was arrested and charged with
the burglary of Beal’s Phar
macy on South Eighth street.
Some $64 worth of goods,
including cigarets and lighters
were taken in the break-in
which occurred about two
weeks ago.
Bond for Bloodworth was set
at $2,000. He was held in the
county jail.
Teeners driving
stolen auto
Three Atlanta teenagers who
were stopped by Griffin Police
last night were found to be driv
ing a stolen car.
They were identified as Terry
Dean Rose, 19, who is in the U.
S. Army and is an escapee from
the Fort Gordon stoackade,
Billy Ray Copeland, 17, and
Charles William Bowles, 17. The
three are being held in the city
jail pending an investigation.
Lt. Ray Ward and Officer
John Nolan checked the car on
Memorial drive about 1:30
o’clock this morning and made
the arrests.
The 1962 Chevrolet was stolen
from a Clayton County resident.

Saddles, bridles
reported stolen
The Sheriff’s Department is
investigating the theft of some
saddles and bridles that were
stored at a farm owned by Dr.
F. T. Wilder on the Williamson
road. The theft was committed
sometime between Sunday and
Tuesday. It was reported
yesterday.
Entry to the building was
made by breaking a window.
Deputies said that the five
western saddles, eight bridles
and rope and gear were worth
about S3OO.
