CAIRO (UPl)—The headquar
ters of a group of opium
anugglers had been established
' in a sprawling city cemetery,
police knew, but they could
never get near enough to nab
members of the gang. Whenev
er they organized a raid, the
gang was tipped off by the
cemetery guards 'and disap
peared.
The authorities last week
tried a new trick. They
organized a bogus funeral,
hoodwinked the guards, and
grabbed five of the gang before
they could scatter.

Hal Suit predicts
Nixon win in state
AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) - Hal Suit, the 1970 Republican
gubernatorial candidate, predicted Thursday President
Nixon would carry Georgia in next year’s presidential
election.
Suit also said a Nixon victory in Georgia “may even put
a Republican into the Senate seat held by David
Gambrell. “Suit said, however, he was not interested in
seeking Gambrell’s seat.
Suit also said he “would like to see good blacks elected
to the General Assembly on the Republican ticket” and
added “Georgia Republicans should go after the blue
collar worker in the state.”
He urged Republicans to take “a more aggressive
stand” in Georgia.
Gambrell spoke here to Republican leaders, to the
Rotary Club and to students at Augusta College.
Gov. Carter backs
women’s plea week
ATLANTA (UPI) — Gov. Jimmy Carter has proclaimed
next Monday as “Women’s Plea for Human Rights for
Soviet Jewry Day” in Georgia.
The designation is part of a national day set to create in
creased public awareness of the plight of Jews in the
Soviet Union, according to Mrs. Liane R. Levetan.
In addition to the proclamation, a meeting has been sch
eduled here under sponsorship of the Leadership
Conference of Jewish Women’s Organizations at the
Ahavath Achim Synagogue.
Panelists on the program will include Mrs. M. E.
Richardson, chairman of the DeKalb County Community
Relations Commission; Mrs. Sidney Q. Janus, president
of the Georgia League of Women Voters; John Speaks,
Harvard graduate and student at Emory School of
Theology, and Mrs. Mendel Maskowitz, an atomic energy
commission scientist.
Police kill two
burglary suspects
AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) — Two police officers, one white
and the other blade, shot and killed two young black
burglary suspects they caught in a Chinese grocery store
here, authorities said Thursday.
Officers said the youths fled out a back window in the
grocery owned by C. W. Woo in the predominantly Negro
section of the city. Officers fired a warning shot as the two

ran down an alley and then fired at them when they
refused to stop.
The victims were Rennie Lee Green, 18, and Earl
Harris, 17. Both were hit in the back, Green with a .38
caliber bullet and Harris with shotgun pellets.
An autopsy report was awaited today on the exact cause
of death for both youths.
The officers involved were Patrolmen Raymond Grant,
who is blade, and J. 0. Beard, who is white.
Police Chief James Bech had recently instituted a
policy of assigning black and white officers in pairs to
avoid racial tensions.
Troopers try out
speedy patrol car
ATLANTA (UPI) — A sporty Javelin automobile
capable of doing 140 miles an hour is being used by the
Georgia State Patrol as an experimental pursuit vehicle.
Bill Wilson, Public Safety Department information
officer, said the patrol will test the car for about three
weeks in each of the six patrol divisions. The car was
loaned to the department by American Motors.
Wilson said Alabama already has some 70 such cars in
use and that “we got a pretty good recommendation from
Alabama officials.”
Bibb jury sentences
man to death trial
MACON, Ga. (UPI) — An allmale allwhite jury in Bibb
Superior Court Thursday convicted Charlie Jacobs, a 27-
year-oki Macon blade, of killing a white crippled youth
during a robbery attempt Aug. 9. The jury sentenced
Jacobs to die in the electric chair Jan. 12.
William E. Tucker, 22, a polio victim, was shot to death
when he refused to open a cash drawer for three men who
held up his grandmother’s grocery in Bibb County.
Two other men — Ernest E. Johnson, 27, and Jerome
Foster, 29 — have been charged in the shooting and are
awaiting trial.
Cobb schedules
liquor referendum
AUSTELL, Ga. (UPI) — Cobb County Ordinary Max
Kaley has scheduled the long delayed county liquor
referendum for Dec. 22 in the wake of a recent Georgia
Supreme Court ruling that Cobb residents were entitled to
the referendum.
The referendum was first proposed more than a year
ago but opponents tied it up in the courts.
