VD Can Result
From Kissing
MB Mk
By Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
Dear Dr. Lamb — My
friend told me that if you
kiss a person on the lips,
if he’s got a sore on his
mouth you can get VD. Is
this true?
Dear Reader — that de
pends upon what the sore
is. A chapped lip, a fever
blister (cold sore, or herpes
simplex) or a fat lip after a
football game isn’t likely to
cause anyone any trouble
except for the guy with the
lip.
Your friend is correct,
however, if the sore on the
lip is the early sore that
sometimes occurs from an
infection with syphilis. Kiss
ing anyone who has the con
tagious stage of syphilis can
result in infection whether
or not there is a sore on the
lip. All the germ needs for
transmission is wet or fluid
environment and the moist
ure in the mouth from saliva
is such a vehicle.
Although kissing can
transmit disease, more of
ten the disease is transmit
ted by what comes after the
kiss.
Dear Dr. Lamb — I am
writing about a five-month
old child cutting teeth. The

The students assaulted Sous

allow a man who has “Algerian
blood on his hands” to speak at
their school.

Dear Reader — It is not
likely that the whisky will
eliminate any bacteria or
problems locally where the
teeth are. The alcohol in the
whisky may act like a mild
anesthetic — or not so mild
if it is given in significant
quantities and often. It
doesn’t take very much al
cohol to affect a five-month
old tot. This practice cannot
be recommended on a re
curring basis.
Dear Dr. Lamb — We
would like to know how ap
ples, rhubarb and other
home-grown fruits rate with
oranges and grapefruit in
vitamin content.
Dear Reader — The two
vitamins of greatest interest
in these foods are A and C.
Oranges have about twice as
much vitamin A as apples
or grapefruit. They have a
little more vitamin C than
grapefruit and seven times
as much as apples.
Rhubarb has a lot of bulk
and yields about one-third
the calories found in the
same weight of orange sec
tions. The same weight of
rhubarb has half as much
vitamin A and one-fifth as
much vitamin C. Now if you
use three times the weight
of rhubarb (to obtain the
same number of calories
as in oranges) then you will
get more vitamin A and half
as much vitamin C from rhu
barb as from oranges.
The real champion is to
matoes. They yield half as
many calories, more than
four times as much vitamin
A and half as much vitamin
C as the same weight of or
anges. If you eat as many
calories of tomatoes as or
anges then you get the same
amount of vitamin C and
nearly 10 times as much vit
amin A.

Carter eyes childhood program
ATLANTA (UPI) — Gov.
Jimmy Carter confirmed today
he is “contemplating” pre
senting a comprehensive, S7O
million early childhood
development program to the
General Assembly next year.
The program, designed as a
kind of massive “headstart”
plan, would cost the state about
$6 million, with the remainder
financed by federal and local
funds.
The plan is contained in an
as yet unreleased preliminary
draft (frawn up by a special

ernor.
Carter said the plan is still in
the thinking stage. But the draft
calls for asking legislators for
a $1 million supplemental ap
propriation in January to begin
planning it, and for the $6
million beginning in fiscal 1973.
That fiscal year beings next
July 1.
In the first year, the program
would be designed primarily
for “disadvantaged” children,
ultimately would be expanded
to care for some 500,000 young-
steps, from birth to school age.
It would use the services of
four state departments—educa
tion, health, welfare and labor.
Representatives of those depart
ments, plus Jack Burris, one of
Carter’s special assistants, com
prise the task force which drew
up the plan.
Included in the program
would be “family group homes”
utilizing mothers to care for
children in their homes. It also
would include “children cen
ters” established by local school
boards. Some of the centers

would be operated full time,

on local needs.
The report indicates the
state’s share of financing the
program would increase yearly,
reaching sl2 million by 1976.
But Carter said that is not
necessarily true. He said he
feels there are enough federal
funds available under various
programs to keep state costs
down.
Asked if it would be necessary
to increase taxes to finance the
state’s share, he said “not nec-

essarily.” But he did not explain
where the money would come
from.
Carter earlier this year asked
department heads to scale back
spending by $57 million because
of faltering revenue collections.
But collections have been on
the upswing for the past three
months.
The report also calls for
teaching parents how to care
for and handle children, and
aiding parents in finding jobs.
It would embrace “all facets
of child development, education,
health, nutrition, family service,
