Joe Namath
faces Dallas
By GARY KALE
UPI Sports Writer
It’s the Dallas Cowboys’ turn
to feel the strength of returning
Joe Namath.
Dallas, carrying a slim half
game lead over Washington in
the National Football Conferen
ce’s Eastern Division, plays
host to the New York Jets
Saturday afternoon. The Cow
boys’ concern, however, is that
an injury-plagued Jets team
suddenly has become a threat
to title seekers.
Namath passed for three
touchdowns last Sunday against
San Francisco, but the Forty-
Niners managed to hang on to
win a 24-21 decision. The odds
makers are cautious about
Dallas’ chances against the
Jets and have installed the
Cowboys only as seven-point
favorites.
Washington, hoping for a Jets
victory, takes on pro football’s
other New York franchise, the
Giants, on Sunday and is 9-
point picks to prevail.
In other Sunday action,
Oakland is a one-point favorite
over Atlanta, Los Angeles is

Namath, coming off the
bench for his 1971 debute after
knee surgery, displayed his old
passing accuracy as he threw
two TD strikes to Rich Caster
and one to Ed Bell. The Jets,
already eliminated from this
year’s race, show they have
style to move up in the AFC
Eastern Division next season.
Dallas has a four-game
winning string going and a
resurgent quarterback in Roger
Staubach, who has thrown 96
passes without being intercept
ed during this surge. One of his
favorite targets is Lance
Alworth, who needs 34 more
yards to join the Jets’ Don
Maynard as the only player to
gain 10,000 yards in receptions.

Sluggers Frank Robinson,
Richie Allen are traded
PHOENIX (UPI)-The trad
ing of slugger Frank Robinson
to the Los Angeles Dodgers and
Richie Allen to the Chicago
White Sox put the finishing
touches today on one of the
most productive winter baseball
meetings, one that could have a
tremendous effect on the 1972
pennant races.
A total of 42 players changed
uniforms during the meeting,
two of them twice, with one
more player still to be named
as the result of 12 deals that
involved some of the most
celebrated players swapped in
the history of the meetings.
Dodgers' Good Deal
Robinson and Allen were
perhaps the biggest—Robinson
going from the Baltimore
been in a slump with only one
win in their last four starts.
The burden of quarterbacking
falls on Billy Kilmer after
Sonny Jurgensen reinjured his
left shoulder in last week’s win
over Philadelphia. Kilmer mas
terminded the first victory
against New York.
Oakland’s chances of retain
ing its slim lead over Kansas
City in the AFC’s Western
Division rests on the Raiders’
ability to stop Atlanta and San
Francisco’s chances against the
Chiefs Monday night. Oakland
was blitzed by Baltimore last
Sunday as the Raiders went
scoreless until the final period
when Fred Biletnikoff hauled in
two TD passes from George
Blanda.
Miami goes after his ninth
straight win and Bob Griese
tries for a personal TD passing
high against New England.
Griese has 19 for the season,
two less than his 1968 total. A
Dolphin victory would put
Miami in an advantageous
position when it meets Bal
timore the following Sunday.
The Colts trail Miami by a
game and a half in the AFC
East.

to the Dodgers as part of a six
man deal. Allen left the
Dodgers and went to the White
Sox for two players.
“The Dodgers got Robinson
for nothing,” cracked Reggie
Jackson, the Oakland A’s power
hitter who visited the meetings,
referring to the fact that the
Orioles got four young players,
whose names are practically
unknown, for Robinson and
veteran southpaw pitcher Pete
Richert.
“I know why they made the
deal and I don’t blame them a
bit,” said Robinson in Los
Angeles. “I’m quite satisfied
because I live on the West
Coast and if I was going to be
traded I would have picked
going to a West Coast team or
a New York team. Not report?
Nonsense. I figure I can play
for two or three years more.”

Falcons underdogs
against Oakland
ATLANTA (UPI)-The Atlan
ta Falcons, needing only one
victory in their last three
games to post their best of six
seasons, are 3 point underdogs
for Sunday’s game here against
the Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders, led by the
passing of Daryle Lamonica
and the ageless George Blanda
and the receiving of Fred
Biletnikoff, lead the AFC’s
Western Division with a 7-2-2
record despite last week’s 37-14
loss to Baltimore.
Atlanta, 5-5-1 after a 24-7 loss
to Minnesota, is third in the
NFC West, a game and a half

president, admitted that Robin
son’s age—36—was the major
factor in Baltimore’s parting
with the only man who has won
the “Most Valuable Player”
award in both leagues—with
Cincinnati in 1961 and the
Orioles in 1966.
“Our whole club was starting
to show its age,” said Cashen.
“We have to bring up Don
Baylor and Terry Crowley from
the minor leagues,” explained
Orioles manager Earl Weaver.
“You can’t keep players like
that in the minors forever.”
Actually, the Orioles got two
young pitchers, Doyle Alexan
der, 21, and Bob O’Brien, 22,
and two other players who
probably will go to the minor
leagues.
For the 29-year-old Allen, the
Dodgers got righthander pitch
er Tommy John, whom White

have leading runner Jim
“Cannonball” Butler back in
their lineup Sunday, visit two
division foes—San Francisco
and New Orleans—after Oak
land and still have an outside
chance to catch the Forty
Nhers.
The Raiders, nursing a half
game lead over Kansas City,
visit the Chiefs next week in a
showdown battle for their
division lead, then close the
season at Denver.
“Neither of our races are
over yet, not by a long shot,”
said Atlanta Coach Norm Van
Brocklin. “You can be sure that
we both want this game.”
Statistically, the Raiders have
outgained the Falcons by about
21 yards and seven points per
game. But the Falcons, whose
best previous season was 6-8 in
1969, hold a slight defensive
edge.
The game apparently will
hinge on the Lamonica-to-
Biletnikoff passing duo and the
running of burly Marv Hubbard
as compared to the passing of
Atlanta’s Bob Berry and the
running of the “Cannonball.”
Lamonica has passed for
1,369 yards and 14 touchdowns,
Belitnikoff leads the AFC in
receptions with 47 and the 215-
pound Hubbard has rushed for
Sox manager Chuck Tanner
predicted “may win 20 games
for the Dodgers," and reserve
infielder Steve Huntz.
Dodger vice-president Al
Campanis insisted his club
would not have traded Allen
unless it had been able to get
Robinson, and also insisted that
the Dodgers had “no problems”
with the controversial Allen
who, despite all his talent, was
traded for the fourth time in
four years.
