Yoga is beauty
aid for all
Yoga, particularly its medi
tative phases, is beauty treat
ment for anyone — man or
woman, according to yoga in
structress Sri Julia Feron.
“Yoga practice can help ease
fatigue and general tension,
supply new pep and energy and
it stimulates both mentally and
physically,” she said. It is, said
Miss Feron, a boon to any en
deavor, be it beauty, business
or just simply existing com
fortably in the harried rigma
role of 20th Century society.
Sri Feron (her title is an hon
orary one) suggests that ulti
mately, those who practice
yoga meditation and exercise
will find themselves less
stressed by life and better able
to tap their own potential. And
less stress means fewer of
those worry lines and wrinkles
that sap beauty potential.
A yoga instructor at two well
known Southern California
health spas where her classes
are a routine part of beauty and
conditioning programs, Sri
Feron has decided to extend
her classes to the sea.
Beginning Jan. 21, she will
serve as instructress on a 12-
day yoga spa cruise sailing to
Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta,
Zihuatanejo and Acapulco,
aboard the Sitmar SS Fairsea.
The idea first appears to be a
study in contradiction — the
quiet, serene pursuit of yoga
meditation combined with the
luxury of a shipboard cruise,
gourmet wining and dining, two
shipboard nightclubs, three
pools and a theater?
“The extremes complement
each other,” said Sri Feron.
She confirmed that the bene
fits of yoga may be absorbed
even in the midst of outer-world
distractions.
“First of all, away from the
home environment and its ac
companying tension and every
day problems, the individual is
free to relax.
“And secondly, too much
yoga, which entails a with
drawal into the self, without
some externalizing at first, can
be too much too soon.
“It can cause the mind to be
come tense and depressed and
this defeats the purpose.
“The cruise setting provides
a perfect atmosphere — time
for yoga during the day, re
laxed play in the evening, and
12 days is a good basic starting
course,” said Miss Feron. She
described yoga as a means to
refining sense perception
which leads to a demechanized
thinking process, a more re
laxed mind and ultimately a
more creative mind.
She does not believe in forc
ing methods or in rigorous ex
ercise.
Her students have included a
man who increased his breath
ing capacity by 30 per cent,
which is said to stimulate the
brain and concentration, in
crease circulation and slow
down the heart rate. Another
student took up yoga to stop
smoking, another to overcome
insomnia.
Yoga is being approached to
day by both young and old.
Young people have found it an
alternative to drugs, business
men who want to escape the
tension of work or increase
their Creative capacities take
classes and the jet-setters look
to yoga for relaxation.
