Super Bowl race slowed by upsets
By VITO STELLINO
UPI Sports Writer
The field in the race to the
super bowl apparently doesn’t
include a super team.
It was somehow symbolic
that on a day when the Miami
Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings,
Oakland Raiders and Detroit
Lions were all beaten, the
Cleveland Browns clinched the
first playoff spot Sunday with a
somewhat less than imposing 7-
5 record.
The day of upsets left only
one pro football team —Miami
—with less than three losses
and the Dolphins, who were
just starting to be touted as the
team of the future, weren’t
exactly super in a 34-13 licking
at the hands of —imagine —the
New England Patriots.
Complex Playoff Set-Up
Cleveland was able to claim
the Central Division AFC title
with a 7-5 mark after edging
Cincinnati 31-27 because Pit
tsburgh, now 5-7, lost to
Houston 29-3. If both teams
finish at 7-7, Cleveland is still
the champion because it has
wound up its division schedule
with a 5-1 mark while
Ronnie Cobb of Griffin bagged this 11 point buck last week in
Monroe County.

The shape of things to come.
Prediction
The Volkswagen Beetle will be around
for years to come.
Prediction
Someone else somewhere will intro
duce a new economy car and there will be
lots of excitement.
Prediction
The excitement will die down.
Prediction
As in the past, people who own old
Volkswagens will trade them in for new
Volkswagens because (we guess) they like
Volkswagens.
Prediction
Our engineers will continue to improve
the way the car works and our stylists will
continue to be frustrated.
Prediction
Sometime in 1972, the Beetle will
become the most popular single model
automobile ever made in the world, by
passing the Model T Ford with production
of over 15 million vehicles.
Prediction
We won't let that last prediction go to
our heads.

Pittsburgh is 3-2 with a game
left.
But explaining the rest of the
playoff picture is like trying to
figure out Phase 11. There are
four clubs —Miami, Baltimore,
Kansas City and Oakland —still
vying for the other three spots
in the AFC. Six clubs —Dallas,
Washington, Minnesota, Detroit,
San Francisco and Los Angeles
—are prime contenders for the
four spots in the NFC and
Atlanta still has an outside
shot.
Lead Decided Tonight
Things are so close that the
lead in both the NFC and AFC
West will be at stake tonight
when San Francisco meets
Kansas City.
In the other three upsets
besides New England’s con
quest of Miami, Philadelphia
stunned Detroit 23-20, San
Diego shocked Minnesota 30-14
and Atlanta upended Oakland
24-13.
Baltimore moved within a
half-game of Miami by blanking
Buffalo 24-0, Los Angeles
moved into a virtual tie with
San Francisco by whipping New
Orleans 45-28 and Washington
remained a half-game behind
Dallas by downing the New
York Giants 23-7.
In the games in which neither
team is a contender, Denver
topped Chicago 6-3 and St.
Louis tied Green Bay 16-16. In a
Saturday game, Dallas conti
nued its winning streak by
routing the New York Jets 52-
10.
Cincinnati jumped to a 20-7
lead against Cleveland but the
Browns fought back and
eventually won the game on
Lerly Kelly’s four-yard touch
down run with 1:48 left in the
game. Bill Nelsen hit on 14 of
28 passes for 244 yards and two
TDs for the Browns.
Jim Plunkett, who celebrated
his 24th birthday Sunday, and
his old Stanford receiver Randy
Vataha —who was 23 Saturday
—celebrated with a pair of TD
passes to give New England its
victory over Miami. The
Patriot victory snapped Mia
mi’s eight-game winning streak.
Ailing Bob Griese played for
the Dolphins but was lifted in
the third period after Larry
Carwell’s 53-yard touchdown
return of a Griese pass.

Minnesota had put together
back-to-back 12-2 seasons but
the Vikings were beaten for the
third time in 1971 when San

the final period. John Hadi’s
five-yard TD pass to Mike
Garrett started the rally and
two Dennis Partee field goals
and Pete Barnes 36-yard

Tom Hayes 60-yard fumble
return for a touchdown sparked
Atlanta to its triumph over
Oakland. Hayes scooped up a
Marv Hubbard fumble on his
own 40 and ran it in. A pair of
touchdowns by Art Malone, on
a 15-yard pass by Bob Berry
- and a one yard run, wrapped it
up for Atlanta.
Pete Liske’s five-yard TD
pass to Kent Kramer with one
minute left gave Philadelphia
the victory over Detroit and
spoiled the Lions’ chance to
capitalize on Minnesota’s loss.

Tourneys headline
southern basketball
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
The Civitan Classic at Jack
sonville, Fla., tonight and
Tuesday should offer an early
line on the relative strength of
two of the South’s top
independents.
Maybe not so much tonight
when llth-ranked Jacksonville
plays Tennessee Tech and
underrated Florida State plays
Stetson —but rather in the
Civitan finals when the two
sunshine state powers should
meet for the first of three
times this season.
Jacksonville, with David
Brent moving in as Artis
Gilmore’s replacement, is off to
a 2-0 start as is Florida State
which still features Ron King
and Reggie Royal as its 1-2
punch.
The Civitan is one of four
tournaments this week involv
ing major deep south teams.
The Alabama Classic —includ
ing Alabama, Mississippi State,
Southern Miss and South
Florida —begins at Tuscaloosa
Thursday; the Vanderbilt Invi
tational —with Vandy, Ole
Miss, Memphis State and
Bradley —starts Friday in
Nashville; and South Carolina
will be on the West Coast next
weekend for the Cable Car
Classic.
Tonight’s single-game headli
ner so far as the Deep South is
concerned is Kentucky at
Kansas State with the Wildcats,
who handed Kansas its first
home loss (79-69) in 28 games,
out to improve its No. 10
national ranking.
