Affection suit
against Dean dropped
JESUP, Ga. (UPl)—The man who brought a $1.3
million alienation of affection suit against State Sen.
Roscoe Dean of Jesup has withdrawn the suit.
Wayne County Superior Court Judge Gordon Knox
signed an order Tuesday night dismissing the suit after
consulting with attorneys representing Edward Douglas
Merrell and Dean.
Dean and Merrell’s wife were arrested last month in
DeKalb County on a warrant signed by Merrill charging
them with adultery, but the court dismissed the charges.
After learning the suit had been withdrawn, Dean issued
a statement saying, “Those who may have tried to
destroy me politically have failed.”
State court merger
is recommended
ATLANTA (UPI)—Gov. Jimmy Carter’s special panel
on judicial reform has recommended a constitutional
amendment to consolidate state courts in Georgia into a
single system.
Appeals Court Judge Robert H. Hall, chairman of the
Commission on Judicial Processes, said Tuesday the plan
is to “draw a ring around all the courts we now have and
make them all part of one unified judicial system.”
The commission proposed an amendment to be voted on
by the legislature and then the electorate in a referendum
stating:
“All courts of the state shall be part of one unified
judicial system. The administration of the unified judicial
system shall be provided by law.”
Hall said a $233,455 grant from the Federal Law
Enforcement Assistance Agency would be available to
finance a study of how the new system would be set up and
work.
Sex films on way out,
Atlanta movie says
ATLANTA (UPl)—Sex films and live exotic shows are
on the way out at the Central Theater, not because of any
pressure by police or the courts but because of the
changing taste of the movie public.
Audiences would rather watch family films rated “GP”
of “R” rather than the “X” rated fare which has been
shown at the Central almost exclusively the past seven or
eight years, says theater owner Robert Morris.
“The only thing that’s permanent in this business is
change,” said the 40-year-old Morris, who also owned a
theater in Miami.
In a recent poll Morris took of his patrons, they
indicated a preference for family-type entertainment, and
that’s what he intends to give them.
The owner is an avid movie fan himself, listing “Gone
With The Wind” and “Dr. Zhivago” as among the best.
Vandals may force
cemetery padlock
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) — Century-old Bonaventure
cemetery may be padlocked during daylight hours to
avoid a recurrence of the vandalism which left more than
30 gravesites damaged during the Christmas weekend.
Detectives said the damage appeared to be the work of
“teenagers playing around.” A stone angel above a child’s
grave was stolen, and tombstones were chipped, broken
or stolen, said police.
“What appalls me is the pure meaness of it,” said City
Manager Tom Coffey. He said the cemetery’s gates are
locked at night and now may have to be closed during the
day as well.
Bonaventure, with its mosscovered oaks and oyster
shell roads, is one of Savannah’s three public cemeteries.
