POLLY’S POINTERS
Anti-curling Hints
For Carpet Runners
By POLLY CRAMER
DEAR POLLY—Bernice can put one-inch-wide masking
tape on the back of her carpet runner that curls up. Put
it all across, being sure it is even at the edges of the run
ner, press down firmly, then put a second strip over the
first one, press down firmly and have no more turned-up
ends. This has really worked on my runners.—MßS. W. D.
DEAR POLLY—Bernice is concerned about the ends of
her carpet runners turning up but all she has to do is buy
double-sided tape and put it where necessary and her
runners will not roll —RUTH
DEAR POLLY—My mother wants to suggest that Ber
nice buy fringe that matches her carpet runners that curl
and sew the fringe all the way round to remove the curl.
Fringe an inch wide or wider gives a decorative look
Heavy-duty thread could be used to sew it on but I used
waxed linen carpet thread. Place right sides together and
whip the fringe in place, overlapping the ends—MßS.

Polly's Problem
DEAR POLLY—I know that alabaster cannot be
cleaned with water so I hope some of the readers
can tell me how to clean my alabaster figurines — M
ANN MARIE
DEAR POLLY—My Pet Peeve is with the many tele
vision and radio commercials directed at us in thick
British accents. Whj' do they inject that phony snob
appeal in advertising when trying to sell American prod
ucts to American consumers?—GEßTßUDE
DEAR POLLY—We mothers all know how hard it is to
get children’s boots and
rubbers on over their reg
ular shoes but last winter I
discovered away that
really works very well. I
saved several old pairs of
my husband’s socks. I slip
these over the children’s
shoes, tuck their long pants
inside, put on their snow
pants and then slip on their
boots with the greatest of
ease. This not only makes
the boots go on easily but adds extra warmth to the chil
dren’s legs and feet. The same idea works for grownups
by putting cotton or nylon footlets over shoes before slip
ping on rubbers —MRS. K. B.

FASHION
This Is the Year of the Chinese
By HELEN HENNESSY
NEA Women's Editor
NEW YORK — (NEA) —
The Chinese name their
years for animals (Year of
the Dragon, Year of the
Horse) but fashion experts
everywhere have named this
the Year of the Chinese. And
no wonder. Chinese motifs,
patterns and fabrics have
taken the fashion world by
storm.
After their romance with
Indians and Gypsies, fashion
designers have turned to
the classic simplicity of the
Chinese 100k —Mandarin col
lars, padded clothes, slits up
the side, frog closings and
soft floppy pants. And fab
rics are done in traditional
Chinese colors and designs
—peacocks, birds, flowers.
Since President Nixon an
nounced his impending visit
to mainland China every
one’s hopping on the Chi
nese fashion bandwagon.
The biggest source of Chi
nese fashions is Hong Kong
where they not only know
all about designing them but
have a dynamic industry
geared to manufacture them.
There are more than 3,000
garment manufacturers
there and fashion is the
Crown Colony’s largest in
dustry. When fashion pal
ates developed a sudden
taste for Chinese, Hong
Kong was ready to deliver.
What all this means to us
is a full gamut of styles
from stunning evening wear
all the way to Chinese work
er’s jackets adapted with a
flair and a flash for occi
dental wearing. Fashion ex
perts are already predicting
a big year for the worker’s
jacket — fashioned from
padded blue cotton, eye-ap
pealing and easy to clean.
Then there’s the midi-length
Chinese men’s coat which
fits American women just
perfectly. Padding gives a
snug warmth against win
ter’s worst. The padding is
traditional Chinese, the
quilting which is often seen
is not but it does add an at
tractive touch.
Many of these designs
have already reached the
American market. A lot
more will be introduced this

No wonder the Chinese look is this year's fashion rage. Pure silk evening gown
(left) features so much of what all the shouting is about—the thigh-length slit
is enchantingly provocative. Mandarin collar and frog closings are traditionally
Chinese. The simplicity of Chinese design is raised to a new elegance (right)
in the flowing, uncluttered lines of quilted evening gown of oriental motifs.
These designs are from Dynasty. A lot more will be shown at the upcoming
