ATLANTA—Maxie Baughan (r), an AU-America at Georgia Tech and a star linebacker in
professional ranks, was appointed yesterday to handle the defense for the Georgia Tech Yellow
Jackets under new head football coach Bill Fulcher (1). Baughan, 33, a native of Bessemer, Ala.
will join the Tech staff immediately. He spent last year as a defensive assistant with the
Washington Redskins of the NFL. (DPI)

ATLANTA (UPI) - “It was
the greatest thrill of my life,”
former Georgia Tech all-Ameri
can and pro linebacker Maxie
Baughan said Thursday when
he was hired to head the de
fense at his alma mater.
Baughan became the first
new assistant to be hired by
new head football coach Bill
Fulcher, who took over last
week from fired Coach Bud
Carson.
“I am looking forward to
working under Bill Fulcher who
I always admired as a coach
and a man,” Baughan said.
Meanwhile, an Atlanta news
paper reported, that former
Alabama and Atlanta Falcon
backup quarterback Steve Sloan
has been offered the job of
heading up the Tech offense.
Sloan currently is first assistant
coach at Florida State Univer
sity, and once was mentioned
as a possible replacement for
Carson himself.
The 33-year-old Baughan spent
last year as a defensive assis
tant coach under Georgia Allen
with the Washington Redskins
of the National Football League.

clip Hawks
The Globetrotters defeated
the Hawks 39-31 yesterday in
the Junior Basketball League.
In other games, the Bulldogs
beat the Supersonics 44-41 and
the Angels downed the Bunnies
17-15.
Charles Driver scored eight
points for the Hawks and Tim
Young and Darrell Driver

Arbour lost
ST. LOUIS (UPI) -Defense
man John Arbour will be lost to
the St Louis Blues for several
weeks as a result of a broken
arm suffered Wednesday night
in a 2-1 victory over the
Pittsburgh Penguins.
Three other St. Louis defense
men —Bob Plager, Nool Picard
and Carl Brewer —also are
sdelined with injuries.
