Hank Aaron may seek new
3-year, $600,000 pact
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) - Hank
Aaron admits he’d like to sign
a three-year contract to cover
his remaining playing days with
the Atlanta Braves and figures
“if nothing goes wrong” that
should be ample time to break
Babe Ruth’s home run record.
“I said near the end of last
season that I only wanted to
play two more years," said
Aaron who will be 38 years old
next Saturday.
“But I got to thinking about
that later and realized, seeing
as how I’m still 75 home runs
behind Ruth, that that would be
cutting it a little thin.” Ruth hit
714 homers; Aaron, who hit 47
last season, has 639.
“I decided I’d better give my
self three years in which to hit
those 75, well, really, 6,1 need,”
said the Braves star. “But I’ll
tell you now, like I did last
fall, if I find that I’m not doing

Reports say Aaron is asking
for a three-year contract total
ing $600,000- which, at $200,000
a year, would make him the
highest paid player in the
history of baseball.
Aaron, who reportedly made
$125,000 or better each of the
past four years, doesn’t like to
talk about how much money
he’s seeking. But he does note
that he has never had trouble
getting together with Braves
President William Bartholomay
in the past — “and I don’t fore
see any trouble this time
either”
Aaron does feel that he has
become one of the biggest draw
ing cards in baseball today.
“Oh, I don’t expect to pack
them in the way Sandy Koufax
did in his good years. But
you’ve got to remember that
Sandy only pitched in about 40
and Don Adams 20 for the
Hawks.
Bing led Detroit with 20 points
and Bob Lanier and Jimmy
Walker each had 17.
The victory was Atlanta’s
fourth in the last five games.

games a year where I’ll play in
at least three times that many.
“People figured they’d better
go see Koufax pitch when they
had a chance because they
might not get to see him again.
“But a lot of people come out
to see me hit home runs,” add
ed Aaron. “In away, it creates
a problem. They got to figuring
I should hit a home run every
time I come up to bat and you
know it just doesn’t work that
way.”
Aaron’s knee has to be a fac
tor in any three-year contract.
If the knee holds up and he con
tinues to close in on Ruth’s ca
reer home run mark, he’ll be a
bargain at almost any price.
But if that knee, which gave him
trouble last season, continues to
act up, the Braves could wind
up paying for a lot of bench
time.
“The knee feels real good
right now,” said Aaron. “I’m

2 players kicked off
team after big brawl
By GENE BLUDEAU
CHICAGO (UPI) - The
University of Minnesota Go
phers headed into the rest of
the Big Ten basketball season
Saturday without the services
of starter Ron Behagen and
anxious to get into spring train
ing and see how it holds up.”
Aaron was asked about re
ports that he and the Braves
were in disagreement over his
refusal to have a knee opera
tion.
“No disagreement,” he re
plied. “I gave the matter a
great deal of thought. I’ve seen
what happened to some other
people who had operations. The
knee seems to be all right now
and I felt it would be best to
leave it alone.”
Aaron said the knee hasn’t
bothered him while batting,” al
though it slowed me down
enough at times to cut as much
as 15 points off my batting av
erage.
“When it has really bothered
me has been when I was slid

reserve Corky Taylor, who
were kicked off the team for
provoking a game-stopping
brawl with Ohio State’s
Buckeyes.
The two 6-foot-9-inch juniors
were suspended for the rest of
the season Friday. Big Ten
Commissioner Wayne Duke
placed most of the blame on
the pair for the donnybrook
which erupted between Minne
sota players and spectators and
OSU players in Minneapolis
Tuesday night.
Ohio State emerged a 50-44
victor in the game and escaped
unscathed when the conference
handed out penalties after an
exhaustive investigation.
But OSU was crippled by
injuries as it prepared to
resume Big Ten play. The
Buckeyes' big center, Luke
Witte, and reserve forward
Mark Wager were recovering
from concussions suffered in
the fight and both were ruled
out of Ohio State's game at
Michigan Saturday.
Duke, announcing the suspen
sions Friday, said conference
officials in a review of game
films and interviews with the
principals “could find no
justification for the actions” of
Taylor and Behagen.
The films showed Taylor
kneed Witte in the groin when
he helped the Ohio State center
off the floor after a rebounding
tussle. They also showed
Behagen jumping up and down
on Witte's shoulder and neck as
he sprawled on the floor while
pandemonium erupted in the
fieldhouse.
Duke said Taylor precipitated
the fighting. He said the

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UPI) -
Hank Stram signed a new 10-

“As in the past,” Hunt said,
“he will still be in control of all
facets of the team operation,
such as scouting, the draft,
signing players, trading and

responsibilities involved with
the preparation of the team for
