Griffin telephones
have come long way
With the celebration this week
of the Daily News’ 100 birthday,
Southern Bell Manager Albert
Harrell called attention some
facts concerning the telephone
in Griffin in particular and
other telephone facts in general.
The telephone carried its first
intelligible sentence on the
evening of March 10, 1876. As
every school child knows, it was
the voice of Alexander Graham
Bell calling to his assistant,
“Mr. Watson, come here, I want
you.” Thus, the telephone was
born.
It was in 1889, just 13 years
after the inventor of the
telephone had received a patent

This historic picture marked Griffin’s going to a five-man
city commission government from the three-man
government. The change was effective in December, 1971,
following a referendum in which voters approved the five-
for his revolutionary invention,
that the telephone came to
Griffin. That year a 10 year-old
firm named Southern Bell Tele
phone and Telegraph Company
opened for business here with 40
subscribers.
Today, 83 years later, more
than 20,578 phones are in use in
homes, offices and factories in
Griffin, where Southern Bell is
spending $5 million on its
construction program this year
and the next two years.
In little more than one life
span, the telephone has
developed from an electronic
infant groping its uncertain
way, to an indispensable instru-
ment of service benefiting man
, kind the world over; business
moves with a smoother pace,
the flow of commerce is more
steady, farm activities run
easier, personal and family liv
ing is more convenient and
abundant because of the tele
phone.
A handsome magneto instru
ment encased in oak was the
first type telephone to be used in
Griffin. It was in service for
many years and was one of the
first “side-winder” models on
which you turned the crank to
signal the operator.
Next came the common
battery system which

Scott Searcy and R. L. (Skeeter) Norsworthy.
eliminated the crank. ’
With this system, it was
necessary only to lift the |
receiver, and a “signal” or
small light on the operator’s ’
switchboard indicated to her |
that a subscriber desired to
make a call. After the operator |
had made the familiar inquiry, .
“Number, please,” she placed I
the calls by inserting a cord into J
the desired telephone number '
jack and rang the number by 4
pressing a ringing key.
A somewhat streamlined J
pedestal desk telephone first
appeared in black-finish in 1910. I
It was made of cast brass, and J
later steel, and was the All- i
American standard for the next |
quarter century or so.
The dial system was in- J
troduced to Griffin in 1941, and 1
with it came the new “500” type f
desk telephone in a variety of
colors. f
“Southern Bell has grown as 1
Griffin has grown,” said Har- ■
rell. “The two have been in- 1
tertwined over the years, both t
dependent upon the other. We at /
Southern Bell feel a deep-seated >
pride in Griffin and in the Daily ■
News celebrating its 100 birth- 1
day. We congratulate the staff I
as the second one-hundred J
years begin.” >
