Take your baby to a specialist.
Our mechanic knows just about all there is to know about
Volkswagens.
He should. He went to special Volkswagen mechanic school.
And he passed a series of special exams. (How else would he
know that the tightening torque for the wheel bearing locknut
should be 50 foot-pounds incorporated on a torque wrench?)
- He goes back periodically for a refresher course, too, to
' keep up on all the changes we make (over 2200 in the past 20
years). Which means he doesn't stop learning when he starts
working.
So when your little one needs a checkup, take it to our me
chanic. He works only on Volkswaqens. So he’s a specialist ot
' curing the bug.

Heroine Would Rather
Have Fire-Safe Griffin
Than Carnegie Medal
Betty Huguley
Advocates Better
Fire Protection
“I would rather know that there
will never be a dlstastrous fire in
my hometown of Griffin than to
receive a medal." Betty Huguley.
16-year-old heroine of the Wine
coff Hotel fire in Atlanta, said to
day.
"Let's keep working for a larger
and better equipped fire' depart
ment. If it prevented only one
disastrous fire in a generation it
would be worth many times over
the extra taxes it would take to
equip and maintain it." she stated
in a letter to the Griffin News.
The letter was written in re
sponse to a request from the News ,
for infoimation concerning her I
saving two girls from almost cer
tain death in the Winecoff Hotel
holocaust. |
The information was requested i
from the News by the Carnegie
Hero Fund Commission. The News
had nominated Miss Huguley for
the Carnegie Medal.
Miss Huguley modestly wrote
that "I do not feel that I am eli
gible for the medal " then urged
better fire protection for Griffin.
‘‘Griffin hotels should be made
as near tireproof as possible with
sprinkler and fire alarm systems
installed,” she wrote.
Miss Huguley was a guest at the
Winecoff in Atlanta when the fire
broke out. She was in Atlanta at
tending a state Tri-Hi-Y confer
ence as Spalding High's represen
tative.
She woke in her fourth floc*
room when she heard sho"
"Fire! Fire." She closed o\,
som over her door, try
slightly and saw
hall was blocked.
turned
her room " o that
see me better" and u to a.
ledge outside her window when the
room began to fill with smoke.
She saw two girls huddled in ter
ror beneath a window three win
dows from her own. They were
terrified and about to jump from
the ledge to the street below. To
have done so would have meant al
most certain death. Approximately
35 persons were killed when they
leaped from upstairs windows to
the streets.
Miss Huguley calmly crawled on.
the ledge to the two girls, calming j
them by her utter lack of fear. She ’
urged them not to jump and soon,
firemen climbed a ladder to the;
room and rescued them.
She waited until the other two
girls were caried safely down the.
ladder and then climbed down to:
safety herself. She was separated)
from the two girls Ln the excite- ;
ment and they remained unidenti
fied.
