Al Capp
is fined
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (UPD-
Cartoonist Al Capp pleaded
guilty Friday to a charge of
attempted adultery and was
fined SSOO plus court costs.
Capp, creator of the comic
strip “Li’l Abner," originally
was charged with sodomy,
indecent exposure and attempt
ed adultery after an incident
with a married University of
Wisconsin-Eau Claire coed last
April 1. The two other charges
were dropped when Capp
pleaded guilty to the attempted
adultery charge at the arraign

The coed said she came to
Capp’s motel room at his
request to talk over the
political atmosphere on campus
before he was to speak but that
once she was there he made
advances, authorities said.
Eau Claire County District
Attorney Lawrence Durning
asked the court to also order
Capp to undergo psychiatric
treatment but Circuit Court
Judge Merrill Farr turned
down the request.
Farr said the fine he levied
was tiie highest allowed for the
offense under state law but
added he has never given a
probation to an adult in an
adultery case.
“The harm the defendant has
done himself as a public figure
should be considered," Farr
said.
