Methodist
merger meet
set in Macon
ATLANTA (UPI) - The gov
erning body of the South Geor
gia United Methodist Conference
voted Thursday to call a special
session of the church to act on
a proposal for merger with its
black counterpart.
The session will be held
March 2 in Macon. It will pre
cede by one month the church’s
quadrennial General Confer
ence in Atlanta which will at
tract Methodists from around
tlie world.
One church source said the
General Conference is now
drafting requirements that
would do away with racial seg
regation in the church. There
fore, the session at Macon will
offer tlie South Georgia Metho
dists an opportunity to act on
tlie racial matter before the is
sue is taken over by tlie Gen
eral Conference.
Racial merger has been a re
curring topic at meetings of the
South Georgia Conference for
several years. But despite
moves to merge with the black
conference, the issue has never
successfully carried.
The North Georgia Confer
ence, however, has already
voted to merge with its black
counterpart.
