Five injured
in accidents
Five persons were treated at
the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
with injuries they suffered in
weekend traffic accidents. One
of them, a Macon teenager, was
admitted with serious back and
neck injuries and was reported
in fair condition today.
Patrolmen at the Griffin State
Patrol Post said that Grace Ann
Keenan, 17, of Macon, suffered
a possibly fractured back and
cuts about the throat when the
car in which she was riding
wrecked on 1-75, south of Locust
Grove.
The driver, Kenneth Wayne
Joiner, 20, also of Macon,
suffered bruises and back in
juries. He told patrolmen that a
heavy wind caused him to lose
control of the small foreign
made car he was driving. It left
the road and overturned three
times. The 1972 model auto was
demolished.
The drivers of two cars were

injured yesterday in a collision
on the North Expressway at
Malier road.
They were identified as
James Nolan Cooper, 43, of
Sunny Side, who suffered face
and head injuries, and Mary A.
Vandergritt, 35, of 1419 Posey
street, who suffered abrasions
and a lacerated chin.
Emmett Walter Echols, 38, of
812 Sunshine drive, Apt. 4, was
treated for head injuries and
abrasions when a rear tire on
his truck blew out and caused
the truck to leave the road and
overturn.
The accident happened
around 2 p.m. Saturday about
eight miles east of Jackson on
Ga. 16 at Wallace road.
Woman accused
of selling beer
A 51-year-old Spalding County
housewife, has been arrested
and charged with selling beer
without a license and selling
beer on Sunday.
According to the Spalding
Sheriff’s Department, Mrs.
Annie Gresham of Route One,
West Mclntosh, road, was
arrested after selling beer early
Sunday morning at her home to
two Sheriff’s officials.
They said Deputy Bobby
Allen purchased 14 cans at 12:45
a.m. and about 50 minutes late,
Spalding Criminal Investigator
Richard Cantrell purchased an
additional 14 cans. A search
warrant then was issued and
some 20 cases of beer were
confiscated from her home.
She was released from the
country jail last night under a
$2,000 bond.

Missing man
telephones
from Canada
Griffin insurance man,
William Sloan, 24, of 523 Hally
burton street, who was reported
missing Mar. 15, has been
located living in Toronto,
Canada.
Griffin Police said that Sloan
called his father and wife and
told them he was there and that
he was all right.
A lookout was posted by law
officials when Sloan did not
return from a business trip to
Newton Mar. 15.
Sen. Smalley
to speak here
Sen. Robert Smalley will
speak to the Griffin Exchange
Club tomorrow at the Elks Club
at noon.
Bill McDaniel is program
chairman.
Sen. Smalley will discuss the
1972 session of the General
Assembly.
Telephone
clinic set
Southern Bell will conduct a
telephone courtesy clinic at the
Chamber of Commerce April 18.
Sessions will be at 10 a.m. and 2
p.m.
The clinic is free. Griffin
business firms have been in
vited to have representatives
attend either of the clinics.
Garden club
plans visit
The Garden Club of Griffin
will make a pilgrimage to
Milledgeville Tuesday to tour
Georgia’s civil war governor’s
mansion and other historic
points of interest.
While club members are in
the central Georgia city, they
will be the guests of Mr. and
Mrs. Frank E. Bone, Sr., ac
cording to clubwoman Mrs.
Robert Walker.
Mrs. Gambrell
will speak here
Luck Gambrell, wife of the U.
S. junior senator from Georgia,
will speak to the Griffin Utility
Club Friday beginning at 12:30
at the Elks Club.
Her husband is campaigning
for reelection.

Mr. Crowder
Mr. Lenton Collier Crowder,
84, of 520 West Poplar street,
died at the Living Center of
Griffin early Sunday morning
after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Crowder was born and
reared in Pike County and had
made his home in Griffin for the
past 19 years. He was a member
of the Williamson United
Methodist Church and a retired
employe of Crompton Highland
MOI.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Mattie Buchanan
Crowder; two daughters, Mrs.
Fred Edwards of Newnan and
Mrs. C. H. Kelley of William
son; four sons, Ellis Crowder of
Atlanta, Cecil Crowder, Harold
Crowder and Howard Crowder,
all of Griffin; 11 grandchildren,
three great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 3
o’clock in Haisten’s chapel. The
Rev. J. U. Little and the Rev.
Forest Buchanan officiated and
burial was in the Williamson
United Methodist cemetery.
Haisten Funeral Home of
Griffin was in charge of plans.
Mr. Whitehead
Mr. Ray O. Whitehead, 59,
died Sunday morning at his
residence in Pike County near
Meansville.
Mr. Whitehead was a driver
for Terminal Transport Co., and
a native of Tennessee. He had
resided in Pike County for three
years.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Jeanie Law Whitehead;
two daughters, Mrs. Norma
Jean Kaiser of Nashville, Tenn.,
and Miss Gale Whitehead of
Zebulon; two sons, Willie Ray
White head, of St. Augustine,
Fla., and J. D. Whitehead of
Oakwood, Ga.
The body was sent to Nash
ville, Tenn., for funeral services
and burial. Haisten Funeral
Home was in charge of plans.
Mr. Akins
Mr. Quillie Akins, 37, of
Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of
Spalding and Pike Counties,
died Sunday afternoon.
He was a member of the Pine
Chapel Baptist Church in Pike
County.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Elizabeth Akins of
Cleveland, Ohio; and his
mother, Mrs. Esther Akins of 1
Griffin.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced by McDowell United
Funeral Home pending the
arrival of the body.
Mr. Owens
Mr. Clifford Owens, 33, of
Atlanta, formerly of Griffin,
died at Grady Memorial
Hospital in Atlanta Sunday.
He was a member of the
Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a
son, Jerry L. Owens of Griffin.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.

open house set
Griffin Tech wiU hold an open
house on Thursday from 7:00
p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The entire
school staff and faculty will be
available to answer questions
and provide tours of the facili
ties. All interested persons are
invited to attend. Door prizes

Quake hits Iran
TEHRAN (UPI)-A strong
earthquake struck Fars pro
vince in southern Iran today
causing heavy casualties and
damage, government officials
said.
Fars province governor ge
neral Manouchehr Pirouz said
the quake which measured
seven on the Richter scale
killed between 2,000 and 4,000
persons, mainly in the adobe
hut villages of Ghir and Karzin
about 100 miles from the city of
Shiraz.

counties and offers full-time
day programs, evening classes
and in-plant training. Appli
cants must be at least 16 years
of age. High school graduation
is preferred but not required for
admission. There is no tuition,
however, students pay for books
and supplies.
“Not less than 2,000 persons
are buried in the rubble of
adobe homes and I think up to
4,000 may have been killed,”
Pirouz said in a report to the
Iranian government in Tehran.
Pirouz said the quake struck
the area about 630 miles south
of Tehran at 5:38 a.m. (9:08
p.m. EST Sunday)
The quake rumbled through a
100-mile swathe of Fars pro
vince, along the shore of the
Persian Gulf, from Shiraz to
Jahrom. .
