Man on trial
in officer’s death
CUMMING, Ga. (UPI) —Testimony was to begin today
in the trial of Charles Bennett, a former Buford policeman
accused of killing two Forsyth County deputies.
An all-male jury was seated Monday to hear the case, in
which the prosecution has subpoenaed over 50 witnesses.
Bennett, 28, is the father of two and the son of Cumming
policeman Bonnie Bennett. He is the second of four men to
be tried for the double-murders of William Cantrell and
Larry Mulkey.
The first defendant, Marcus Wayne Ratledge, 24, of
East Point was given two consecutive life prison terms for
his part in the crimes. Two other men, James Lingerfelt,
32, and Herbert Dean Smith, 30, both of the Cumming
area, remain to be tried.
Cantrell, Forsyth County’s chief deputy, and Mulkey
were found shot and stuffed into the trunk of their patrol
car Jan. 10, on U.S. 19 near Cumming.
The prosecution will contend that Bennett entered into a
"corrupt agreement” to kill the two deputies after they
learned of an alleged break-in he committed as part of a
burglary ring and caught him driving a stolen car.
Catholic Bishops
open 3-day meet
ATIANTA (UPI) — With an eye on balancing its budget
by reorganizing itself, the National Conference of Catholic
Bishops opens a three-day meeting here today, the first
ever which accredited newsmen will be allowed to cover.
The reorganization plan, including the possible consoli
dation of some related divisions, realignment of staff
offices, phasing out of other divisions and elimination of
some, is designed to make the 1973 budget 25 per cent
lower than this year.
The $3.7 million budget for this year includes an SBOO,OOO
deficit, and a spokesman for the conference said the
bishops last year voted to bring the 1973 budget into
balance.
The spokesman said about 75 newsmen, and 23 other
observers, including diocesan priests, religious men and
women and representatives of the laity, will be allowed to
watch the proceedings for the first time.
The bishops will also have to look over 420 pages of
suggestions from bishops that have been offered so far for
inclusion in the proposed bishop’s pastoral letter on
Catholic education.
The National Conference of Catholic Bishops, a
canonical entity whose members are American bishops, is
meeting with the U. S. Catholic Conference, a national
church action agency. Both are headquartered in
Washington.
State flag donated
to Franklin Museum
ATI ANTA (UPI) — An Atlanta real estate man has
donated a new Georgia state flag to the Franklin Institute
Science Museum in Philadelphia, and Lt. Gov. Lester
Maddox will be on hand May 10 to officially give it to the
museum.
Maddox said the new flag was given by Ed Isakson, of
an Atlanta real estate firm, and replaces an outdated one
that is displayed, with flags of the other states, in the
museum rotunda.
A recent visitor to the museum noticed that the Georgia
flag was one adopted by the Georgia General Assembly in
1879. The legislature in 1956 adopted a new standard, made
up of a blue field with the state seal on the left side and the
stars and bars of the Confederacy on the right.
Maddox said he will combine a trip to New York to
speak to the National Economic Council with the flag
presentation during the day.
Panel to study
closing costs
ATLANTA (UPI) — A 10-member joint committee on
title insurance and closing costs involved in the sale of
homes is expected to hold public hearings in the next two
months on present laws on insurance and closing costs.
The committee, named Monday by House Speaker
George L. Smith and Comptroller Johnnie L. Caldwell,
will also study the public’s awareness of the methods used
to provide title insurance.
Doraville fire
investigated
ATLANTA (UPI) — Jesse C. Norman, mayor of the
Atlanta suburb of Doraville, says city police and DeKalb
County fire and police authorities are investigating the
cause of the explosion and fire last Thursday that took two
lives.
“I and all other members of the city commission will
take whatever steps which may be necessary as rapidly
and effectively as may be possible to prevent reoccurance
of such a tragedy,” Norman said.
The fire at the Triangle gasoline storage tank farm is
completely out, the mayor said, and DeKalb County fire
officials have advised him "there is no danger it would
rekindle itself.”
