Chaplain, Colonel Armistead Boardman, USAF, was recently decorated with the Legion of Merit
by Lt Gen. Thomas K. McGehee, Commanding General Aerospace Defense Command, Ent AFB,
Colo., for his meritorious service as command chaplain HQ 7th Air Force, Vietnam. As Senior Air
Chaplain in Vietnam, he was responsible for all USAF religious activities, programs, and plans.
The chaplain is a 1939 graduate of Griffin High School. A resident of Sewanee, Tenn., he was
1 ordained in 1944 by the Episcopal Bishop of Atlanta. He became a member of the Georgia Air
National Guard in 1946 and was called to active duty in 1951 with the Tennessee Air National
I Guard while rector of St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland, Tenn. With his year’s tour in
1 Vietnam, Chaplain Boardman has spent 10 years overseas, including Japan, Spain and Hawaii. He
i is a graduate of the Air War College, the University of the South and has a master’s degree from
; Union Seminary, N.Y., and George Washington University, Washington, D.C. Chaplain Boardman
’ is a commercial pilot and holds an instructors pilot rating for gliders. He is married to the former
Ann Lowrey Webster of Savannah. Their son, Tom is an attorney in Dallas, Tex., and their
daughter, Gwynn teaches school in Orange Park, Fla. At present Chaplain Boardman is assigned
to Headquarters Aerospace Command, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Ed Chalkley has been elected
governor of the Moose Lodge in
Griffin. He will succeed Ben
Hoard at the April 25 installa
tion of new officers.

Sam Cecil, three-year trustee.

PIKE PRIMARY PTA
The Pike County Primary
PTA will meet tonight at 7:30
p.m. in the first grade center
auditorium. Mrs. Madison New
of Thomaston district state PTA
secretary, will install officers
for next year.
The Primary Spring Festival
will be held Saturday, April 15,
on the Primary campus from
11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. En
tertainment is planned by
children and adults. Proceeds
will go toward purchasing
playground equipment for the
Primary School.
COOKING SCHOOL
Senior Girl Scout Troop 102
will sponsor a cooking school,
presented by Atlanta Gas Light
Co., tonight at 7:30 p.m., at the
Rural Urban Center. Tickets
are one dollar and will be sold at
the door.
SPRING FLING
The Griffin Academy School
will sponsor its Spring Fling
today, beginning at 5 p.m., at
the school, located on the corner
of Wilson and Hudson roads.
There will be entertainment for
everyone.
Deaths-Funerals
Mrs. Newton
Mrs. Elma Grace Newton,
widow of Mr. Will Hill Newton,
died unexpectedly early this
morning at her residence 527
South Hill street.
Mrs. Newton was born in
Hawkinsville, the youngest
daughter of the late Matthew T.
Grace and the late Fannie
Blalock Grace. She resided in
Barnesville as a young lady and
was graduated from Gordon
Institute. She received her
degree in art and music from
Wesleyan College in Macon. At
Wesleyan, Mrs. Newton was a
member of the Phi Mu national
sorority.
She was a member of the
First United Methodist Church,
the Woman’s Society of
Christian Service and the Ar
thur Maddox Sunday School
Class. Mrs. Newton was a
member of the Boynton Chapter
United Daughters of Con
federacy and the Garden Club
of Griffin. She served for
several years as a Gray Lady
and was a member of the
Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Newton is survived by a
son, Will Hill Newton, Jr.; two
grandsons, Will Hill Newton 111
and Courtlandt Alan Newton, all
of Atlanta; and a sister, Miss
Nettie Lee Grace of Bar
nesville.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday afternoon at 3
o’clock from the First United
Methodist Church. The Rev.
Dumas B. Shelnutt and the Rev.
Wallace Z. Wiggins will of
ficiate and burial will be in Oak
Hill cemetery. Members of the
Arthur Maddox Sunday School
Class will sit in a body at the
funeral. The body will remain at
Haisten Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mosely
Funeral services for Mrs.
Clara Moody Mosely were
conducted this morning at 11:30
o’clock from the Ben Hill
Baptist Church where she was a
member. Burial was in West
view cemetery in Atlanta.
Mrs. Mosely died Tuesday
night in the Highview Nursing
Home in Ben Hill. She made her
home in Griffin 14 years before
moving to Atlanta 12 years ago.
She is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. Helen Murner of Atlanta;
four sisters, Mrs. Mamie
Mathis, Mrs. Beatrice Ed
mondson, Mrs. Lizzie Morris,
all of Griffin and Mrs. Myrtle
Ball of Beaumont, Tex.; a
brother Trice Moody of Mobile
Ala,; two grandsons and
several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Stuart
Mrs. Sara Helen Rawls Stuart
of 123 Third avenue, Akin
subdivision died this morning.
Mrs. Stuart was a member of
the Searcy Memorial United
Methodist Church. She was born
in Henry County and had made
her home in Griffin for most of
her life. She was employed at
Dundee No. One.
She is survived by her
husband, Leonard Marvin
Stuart; two sons, Michael G.
Stuart and Dennis Lee Stuart;
father, C. M. Rawls, all of
Griffin and a brother, Hugh D.
Rawls.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDonald Chapel.
Mrs. Howell
Funeral services for Mrs.
Leona Gibson Howell of Atlanta
were conducted this afternoon
at 2 o’clock in the First
Nazarene Church in Atlanta.
Burial was in Greenwood
cemetery in Barnesville.
Griffin survivors include
three granddaughters, Mrs.
Margaret Green, Joyce Black
man and Mrs. Bobbie Ann
Mason.
Mrs. Howell died Tuesday
night at her home.
Rev. Pry on
The Rev. Emett Paul Pryon,
85, of Route one, Williamson,
died at the Living Center
Wednesday night.
The Rev. Pryon was a lifelong
resident of Spalding and Pike
Counties. He was a member of
the Antioch Baptist Church and
was one of the oldest members
of the church. The Rev. Pryon
was ordained to the ministry by
the late Rev. D. F. Fuller.
His survivors include a
daughter, Miss Eunice Pryon of
Griffin.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mr. Huddleston
Mr. J. D. Huddleston of the
Locust Grove road died at his
home Wednesday night.
Mr. Huddleston was born in
Fayette County, moving to
Griffin 26 years ago. He was a
member of the Oak Hill Baptist
Church and was in the con
tracting business. He was a
veteran of World War Two,
serving in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Audrey Jones Huddleston
of Griffin; a daughter, Mrs.
Brooksie Huddleston Polk of
Victorville, Calif.; two sons,
Warren Huddleston and David
Huddleston, both of Griffin;
granddaughter, Misty Polk of
Victorville, Calif.; mother, Mrs.
Algia Land of Fairburn; father,
Ernest H. Huddleston of
Griffin; three sisters, Mrs.
Kathleen Minix of Newnan,
Mrs. Paul Mann of Locust
Grove and Mrs. J. T. Turner of
Fairburn; three brothers,
Floyce Huddleston of Griffin,
Eugene Huddleston of College

Fairburn.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday afternoon at 2
o’clock from Oak Hill Baptist
Church. The Rev. Warren
Bedingfield and the Rev. Robert
M. Lloyd will officiate and
burial will be in Oak Hill
cemetery. The body will remain
at Pittman Rawls Funeral
Home until carried to the
church to lie in state from 1:30
to the funeral hour.

Mark W. Massey, 13, of 2188
Kenny Court, East Point, were
held today at 3 p.m. in the
chapel of Carmichael Funeral
Home, East Point.
Burial was in Oak Hill
cemetery, Griffin, at 4:45 p.m.
Survivors include his mother,
Mrs. Hilda Massey; four
sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Billot,
Mrs. Joanne Stinson, Mrs. Faye
Sellars, and Miss Connie
Massey; three brothers, David
Ragan, Wayne Ragan, and Jeff
Massey; and a grandmother,
Mrs. Bessie White.

Mr. Moon
Mr. Roy Jackson Moon, 64, of
Route one, Flovilla, died
Wednesday afternoon at Sylvan
Grove Hospital after a lengthy
illness.
Mr. Moon was a retired sales
representative of Draper
Corporation, Hopedale, Mass.,
and was a member of the Indian
Spring Lodge of Masons.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Beatrice Johnson Moon;
four daughters, Mrs. Pope
Moncreil of Indian Springs,
Mrs. Dorothy Pearl of Land
o’Lake, Fla., Mrs. Norbert

of Route two, Jackson, died
Wednesday night at the Macon
hospital.
He is survived by his wife,

Duffey as Macon; a son, Sgt.
Winfred Faulkner, U.S. Air
Force, stationed in Iceland;

Vandals break
windows here
Griffin Police said that
vandals broke windows in three
businesses last night.
Nine window panes were
broken with bricks and a base
ball at the office of Griffin ar
chitect, Gerald Bilbro, 525 East
Taylor street. The damage was
around $25.
A plate glass window, valued
at SIOO, was found broken at
Lowe’s Drive In, 514 North
Fourth street.
The front window at the H &
W Grill at 333 East Broadway,
also was broken. Damage there
was around $75.
TV sets stolen
Burglars broke into the East
Griffin Elementary School last
night and took two table model
Westinghouse television sets.
Entry into the building was
made by prying open a side
door.
The Sheriff’s Department
said apparently the break-in
took place at 4 a.m. today as an
electric clock had been un
plugged.

SPALDING BUTTS
COUNTIES
Notice is hereby given that on
Thursday, the 18th day of May,
1972, at 7:30 P.Art., in the
Courthouse in Griffin, Georgia,
an opportunity will be afforded
any interested person or group
of persons to be heard in
connection with the proposed
location of Project F-022-1 (4),
Spalding-Butts Counties.
Project F-022-1 (4), Spalding,
Butts Counties is proposed as
the Griffin, Georgia to 1-75
connector and relocation of S.R.
16. The project will traverse
west-east with the western
terminus on U.S. 41 in Griffin
and the eastern terminus at the
interchange of 1-75 and S.R. 16
in Butts County. The project
will involve the construction of
a new urban major street and
improvement of a two lane
rural type facility, part on new
location.
The purpose of this project is
to improve flow of traffic and
safety conditions.
Maps, drawings and other
pertinent information which has
been developed on the project
will be available for public
inspection and copying at the
Department of Transportation,
Highway Division No. 3 Office
which is located on US 19 in
Griffin, Georgia, during normal
business hours prior to the
public hearing.
Written statements and other
exhibits in place of, or in
addition to, oral statements at
the public hearing will be
accepted by the Department
until June 1, 1972. They should
