Johnny Sample convicted
of cashing stolen checks
PHILADELPHIA (UPI)-A
Federal Court jury Thursday
convicted former pro football
player Johnny Sample of
cashing 25 stolen U.S. Treasury
checks.
Sample had told the jurors he
was in New York City when the
checks were reportedly cashed
here.
Sample, a former defensive
back for the New York Jets and
Baltimore Colts who now runs a
ticket agency here, was visibly
shaken when the jury returned
the verdict. His wife, Andrea,
began to cry. He went to her
and tried to comfort her with
kisses.
An 11-count indictment
charged that Sample cashed the
stolen checks over four days
during April, 1971. The 34-year
old Sample was acquitted of
players will attend.
Coach Bill Fulcher of Georgia
Tech and several of his players
are expected to attend.
Coach Vince Dooley of the
University of Georgia will be
unable to attend because of the.
Bulldogs’ annual G-Day game.
However, the Bulldogs will be
represented.
Morris Stroud of Griffin and a
member of the Kansas City
Chiefs will also attend along
with several area high school
coaches and many high school
players.
walked four and struckout 11.
Griffin now has a 6-1 record
and stands 2-0 in region play.
Coach Don Pierce carried his
team to LaGrange this af
ternoon for a region game.
Eleanor Walker was beaten 3-
6 and 3-6, Martha Glasgow lost
3-6 and 1-6, Susie Edwards Fell
3-6 and 2-6 and Vickie Ward lost
1-6 and 0-6.
Susan Ahl and Cindy Jones
lost in doubles, 6-4, 3-6 and 4-6.
Griffin will play R. E. Lee
here Tuesday at 3 p.m.
one of the counts, which
charged that he held possession
of a commercial check valued
at $1,666.
In a 30-minute charge, U.S.
District Court Judge Daniel H.
Huyett told the 10-man, two
women jury that testimony
during the four-day trial
regarding identification of the
check casher “must be received
with caution and scrutinized
with care.”
The case went to the jury
Thursday afternoon, after U.S.
attorney Richard Galli said
three bank tellers “could not
have been mistaken when they
testified earlier in the trial that
Sample cashed some of the
stolen checks.
Galli said Sample picked his
own bank to cash the checks
because he was well known and
the tellers would not question
the checks.
Sample’s attorney, Herbert
Hardin, maintained that the
checks were cashed between
April 5 and April 8 of last year
by “professionals who picked
up a victim and a patsy.” He
said the bank was the “victim”
and Sample was the “patsy.”
Hardin said after the trial
that he would file a motion for
a new trial within one week.

Trevino on burnin
6 1 9 m going to burn out wealthy 9
BY DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
Pensacola, Fla. (UPl)—Lee
Trevino finally admitted that
maybe Jack Nicklaus was right
after all.
Nicklaus had been saying all
along that Trevino was trying
to do too much, that he was
going to burn himself out if he
kept showing up for almost all
of the events on the PGA tour
in addition to taking care of all
the outside business that the U.
S. Open and British Open
championships had brought his
way.
“If Lee Treino would play
less, he’d win more,” said
Nicklaus on more than one
occasion. “The way he’s going,
he’s going to bum himself out
in a couple of years.”
Trevino had scoffed at this.
Earlier this week he’d rebut
ted:
“Maybe I will burn out but if
I do, I’m going to bum out
wealthy. Right now, all that
cash is out there just waiting to
be grabbed and I feel I can grab
it.”
But Thursday, Lee Trevino
was singing a different tune.
Practically dragging through
the opening round of the
Monsanto Open, “saying things,
too loudly, that I shouldn’t say
and that I shouldn’t let the
gallery hear me say: Burying
three clubs in the ground,”
Trevino shot a 3-over-par 74—
and then asked for permission
to withdraw from the tour-

ACCURACY!
Whether you fly cast, spin or bait cast . . . learn to be
accurate. Overshooting or undershooting good fishing
spots not only mean empty stringers but it tears down
your estimation of your own fishing ability . Gain confi
dence by practicing at home in your back yard. Pick
out any target and cast at it until you can hit it without
thinking about fundamentals. Once you have mastered
accuracy you have overcome the greatest obstacle facing
most fishermen.
To overcome the financial obstacle facing most families,

play well because of the way I
feel. The only excuse I have is
that I am exhausted and I hope
the gallery understands.”
Trevino explained how he felt
in an uncharacteristically quiet
voice.
“This has nothing to do with
the golf course and nothing to
do with the way I played. It’s
something that’s bulding up
now for some time. I’m
absolutely exhausted. I’m not
thinking at all. I’m not acting
myself.”
Trevino blamed his trouble,
in part, on the “extreme
pressure” he felt in last week’s
Masters where he shot 12-over
par golf after having boycotted
that prestigious tournament for
two years.
“I simply was not mentally
ready to play in this tour
nament,” Trevino continued. “I
came in here drained.”
Trevino said that he planned
to go home to rest until next
Wednesday when he would
report in “at noon” at La
Costa, Calif., for the Tour
nament of Champions. He said
he planned to play the following
week at Dallas, then skip
Houston.
“But I have a tough schedule
after that, something like 10
tournaments in a row,” Trevino
said. “Unless I start feeling
better, I may have to drop out
of some of those.”
Trevino said he played here
at Pensacola, a tournament
Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer,
Gary Player and Billy Casper
skipped, because he felt he
owed it to the sponsor.
“They put up a lot of money
to put on these tournaments
and I feel those of us who have
become gallery favorites should
make every effort to appear
whenever we can.”
Although Trevino didn’t men
tion it Thursday, he hurt his
back earlier in the week while
turning off his shower and he
confessed earlier that it hurt
him everytime he bent over to
putt.
Although he did win the
Sahara Open two months
afterwards, Trevino has not
been the Trevino of old since he
had his appendix taken out last
August in an emergency
