Bucks again
Lakers stop
By DAVE BEGEL
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (UPI)-
The sigh of relief from the Los
Angeles locker room was
almost strong enough to blow
the walls down.
Los Angeles had just beaten
the Milwaukee Bucks, 108-105,
to take a 2-1 lead in the
Western Conference National
Basketball Association playoffs.
And the win gave the Lakers a
real boost in morale as well as
statistics.
“Needless to say it was an
important win for us,” Lakers
Coach Bill Sharman said. “It
was a gutsy win, a crucial
win.”
The Lakers have now come
back from the humiliating 93-72
win the Bucks notched in the
opening game and both Lakers
wins were close affairs, includ
ing the 135-134 victory Wednes
day night.
Hill maintains
Monsanto lead

PENSACOLA, Fla. (UPI)-
No one is more surprised to
find Dave Hill leading the
Monsanto Open golf tournament
by four strokes than Dave Hill.
“The good Lord was looking
after me Thursday and he was
looking after me again Friday,”
said the 34-year-old Jackson,
Mich., pro after posting a score
of 64-68—132 to move four
strikes ahead of runnerup Bob
E. Smith (65-71-136).
“Those other guys haven’t
had the luck I’ve had,” Hill
continued. “But then, the Lord
doesn’t have enough time to
watch everybody.”
Jim Colbert, who won this
tournament three years ago
after a two-day rain delay, held
down third place, five strokes
back of Hill, going into today’s
third round after shooting 70-137
Friday. Another stroke back
was Citrus Open champ Jerry

The statistics show that Gail
Goodrich was the man who led
the Lakers to the win, but it
was the imposing presence of
Wilt Chamberlain that really
beat the Bucks.
“Wilt was just tremendous,”
Sharman said. “He blocked
shots and intimidated them.”
Chamberlain scored only sev
en points, but defensively he
blocked 10 shots—including five
on Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He
also caused several Milwaukee
baskets to go awry when he got
in the way of Milwaukee
players.
“You can’t challenge Wilt,”
Bucks Coach Larry Costello
admitted after the game. “He’s
too good and too experienced.
I’d rather have the guys pull up
and take the 15-foot jump
shot.”
Chamberlain was modest
after the game and gave credit

Blocker, who had a 71.
Then come five 139 shooters
including Charles Coody (67),
Al Geiberger (68), Harry
Toscano (70), Ray Floyd (71)
and Kermit Zarley (73); a half
dozen at 140 and three at 141 as
a total of only 19 out of the
original 147-man starting field
was still under par after 36
holes.
The field was trimmed to 70
Friday with a score of 3-over
par 145 needed to make the cut.
Lee Trevino had withdrawn the
previous day because of “ex
treme exhaustion” and such
other big names as Jack
Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary
Player and Billy Casper never
showed up—preferring to take
off the week between the
Masters and the Tournament of
Champions.
George Archer, who needs to

victory.
“I don’t care what you say
about Kareem —one-on-one he’s
unbea table,” Chamberlain said.
“You can never beat Milwauk
ee by stopping him cold. We
stopped their team and I got a
Uttle lucky.”
The game was close all the
way and the lead changed
hands continually, but neither
team was able to build up a
commanding lead for long.
The big edge for the Lakers
came at the free throw line
where they hit 26 to 36
compared with only 15 to 28 for
the bucks.
Abdul Jabbar was the high
scorer for the game with 33
points and Bob Dandridge and
Lucius Allen each added 25 for
the bucks. Goodrich had 30 for
the Lakers while Jim McMillian
added 27 and Jerry West 22.

ATLANTA (UPI)-The Geor

But today’s session may not
be an indicator. At least a doz

IN MEMORIAM
..In memory of our mother
and grandmother. On
Wednesday, April 14th, 1971,
at the hour of 12:05, the death
angel visited the home of her
children and carried away
their mother, Mrs. Viola L.
Craddock. She was a loving
mother to all her children
and grandchildren. She
loved and served God for 55
years. She was a member of
Wildwood Baptist Church
and was a faithful worker for
the Lord. She bore her
sickness with patience until
God saw fit to take her home
and leave us. Oh, so sad and
lonely. But while it's our
loss, it is heaven's gain. Our
mother is gone - she is at rest
- she is leaning on our
Saviour's breast. A voice we
loved is still, a place is
vacant in the home that
never can be filled. Oh, our
hearts ache when we think of
that dear, laughing, smiling
face that we will never see
again. May God give us
strength to carry on our
burdens and live to meet her
where is rejoicing on
yonder's shore, the one and
only thing we are living for.
She always entered the door
with a smile and any
stranger who passes her way
was welcomed in. She was in
failing health for more than 4
years before God called her
to fill the place he had
prepared for her. She leaves
to mourn her 5 children, Mrs.
Sara Maner, Johnny,
Edward, Bob, and Marion
Craddock. Jesus has taken a
beautiful flower out of the
garden of love. Borne it
away to the city of God,
home with the angels above.
A kind sweet mother, on
Jesus did rely, and I know
I'm going to meet her, where
we'll never say good-bye. So
many times we are made to
weep, thinking of mother
who's now asleep. Mother
lived for God each day, now
He's called her home to stay.
Heaven was expecting her.
That's one thing I know, she
made it up with Jesus a long
time ago. Written by
daughter and
granddaughter, Mrs. Sara
Maner and Kathy Maner.

DARLINGTON, S.C. (UPI)-
The 16th Rebel 400 will be held
Sunday at the nation’s oldest
superspeedway with most of the
drivers in the race hoping just
to keep up with David Pearson
and Bobby Allison.
Pearson won the pole position
Thursday in the Wood Brothers
Mercury. The Rebel will mark
the first time Pearson, from
Spartanburg, S.C., has driven
the famed racing team’s car.
“I can see why they are so
hard to beat,” Pearson said
shortly after he qualified. “It’s
the best car I’ve ever had. The
people working on it are just
more interested.”
The Wood Brothers machine
was handled earlier in the
season by A. J. Foyt who is now
preparing for the Indianapolis
500 in May.
Pearson, who won the Rebel
championship at the Mission
Hills Country Club Friday.
The 5-foot-3(6 Texan, who
weighs 110 pounds and has
trouble gaining weight, put
together five birdies and two
bogies on the par 72, 6,352-yard
desert course and took a two
stroke lead over Kathy Whit
worth, Jane Blalock, and Carol
Mann, all in at 71.
Last year’s top LPGA money
winner, Miss Whitworth, was
three over after the first four
holes and then picked up four
birdies to gain a tie with steady
Miss Blalock who had one
birdie and 17 pars. Late
finishing Miss Mann also was
over par on the front side with
a 38 but came back with a
three-under 33 for her sub par
71.
Playing under ideal weather
conditions for the richest purse
in LPGA history, the 40
contestants who qualified by
placing first second and third in
any of the 1970, 1971 or 1972
LPGA tournaments, plus any

two years ago, is expected to
get his toughest competition
from Bobby Allison, whose
Chevrolet Monte Carlo will be
on the outside spot in the first
row.
Other drivers concede that
Allison and Pearson have the
two fastest cars on the 1% mile
track and the man who gets to
the first turn the quickest and
takes an early lead is going to
be hard to displace.
If there is a favorite to beat
Allison and Pearson, it would
have to be Richard Petty, the
all-time money winner on the
NASCAR circuit.
Leeroy Yarbrough, once a
force to be reckoned with on
the NASCAR circuit before he
began driving only an occasion
al race, is in the Bth starting
spot, running a Ford with a 351-
cubic-inch engine, the smallest
greens difficult to putt.
“The breaks are not hard to
read,” said Miss Whitworth,
“It’s just that the greens are
new and the speed is hard to
judge. Putting will tell the
story.” she said.
Second-round play for the
$20,000 first-place prize resumes
Saturday with the Hughes
Sports Network televising the
final four holes.
